Haiku homeowner with AR-15 rifle scared away robbers

Fri, 07/27/2018 - 05:30

A Haiku man armed with an AR-15 rifle scared off three men trying to rob his house earlier this month, Maui Police reported in a news release.

Police say the man confronted the suspects after they brandished a shiny handgun and forced another victim into a bedroom.

The rifleman fired a single shot, which forced the suspects to flee the house. They fired four shots as they fled.

No one was injured during the incident, but the victims said the suspects made off with $3,000.

Police stress an investigation is underway and are circulating a description of the suspects.

The National Rifle Association holds that Americans possess more than 8 million AR-15s today and has frequently been termed, “America’s Rifle.”

Meet Jody Stelzig, weapons wrangler for the movies (VIDEO)

Fri, 07/20/2018 - 08:00

The HBO series Westworld is a dystopian thriller where an Western-themed amusement park full of cyborgs revolt against greedy corporate creators. Suffice it to say there’s a lot of gunplay. And when Hollywood wants the thrills to feel real, they turn to people like weapons wrangler Jody Stelzig.

Stelzig is a jack-of-all trades – acting, stunts, fight coordinating – who specializes in training actors how to safely handle weapons and animals. In addition to providing all the weapons used on the award winning Westworld’s interactive production at SXSW, he teaches those interested in the craft at his ranch The Rockin’ J out in Luckhart, Texas.

Attempting to use a Glock as a one-time handcuff key with a universal adapter (VIDEO)

Fri, 07/13/2018 - 08:30

A familiar trope seen on screens big and small is to shoot apart a pair of handcuffs to free someone when a key isn’t available, but how realistic is that?

In the above test, Edwin Sarkissian uses a set of Smith & Wesson M100s cuffs, which are pretty standard in LE use, and kind of ironic as the test gun is a Glock. However, barring luck, it looks like the best way to open a set is to invest in a 99-cent standard handcuff key rather than a 99-cents worth of ammo — from a handgun anyway.

Turning the humble Savage 64F from plinker to burp gun (VIDEO)

Mon, 07/09/2018 - 14:00

With a chopped barrel and full-auto capability, this budget Savage has gone from a .22LR tin can smoker to smoking hot with a 2,400 rpm cyclic rate.

YouTube gun vlogger legend Royal Nonesuch has grown up from the days of backyard slamfire shotguns and, with a Type 07 manufacturer FFL and SOT on the books to make it all perfectly legal, he took a Savage 64F and tweaked it a bit. With a barrel whittled down to just 7-inches on the R&D gun (he plans to use it as a suppressor test bed), the open-bolt modification on the little rifle lets it rip at crazy fast rates of fire.

Now if only the Hughes Amendment wasn’t a thing…

Showing some love to the now-vintage Norinco SKS (VIDEO)

Mon, 07/02/2018 - 09:30

Imported by the shipload back in the 1980s, the humble Chicom SKS is now a classic that is increasingly getting a second look.

With the ban on importation on Norincos stretching past its second decade, many decent AKs are now more obtainable than this orange-wood clad 7.62x39mm semi-auto. The days of the “$99 SKS” have long since faded into the rearview.

With that in mind, Robski and Paul with the AK Operator’s Union talks about these interesting guns for those who may have more familiarity to the platform that replaced it in service — Kalashnikov’s AK pattern rifle — than the old SKS.

Cranking out and testing some J-B Weld shotgun slugs (VIDEO)

Fri, 06/29/2018 - 12:30

Taking advantage of the iconic cold weld two-part epoxy system “with over 10,000 uses,” the addition of desktop crafted shotgun loads could be #10,001.

The crew at Taofledermaus succumbed to viewer demands to evaluate the qualities of the company’s fast-setting SteelStik as shotgun fodder and constructed a few slugs and some birdshot. Then came some range time to see just how well the Weld held up in destructive tests– with an emphasis on destructive.

FN P90 PDW running through 50 rounds of 5.7 in a hurry (VIDEO)

Thu, 06/14/2018 - 10:00

When you take a sedate FN PS90 and convert it back to how it was intended, complete with a 7.3-inch barrel and giggle switch, it becomes a lot more fun at the range.

In the above video from The Wound Channel, they detail a post-86 dealer sample P90 that started life as a semi-auto carbine but after fitting a CMMG barrel and birdcage, along with a selector switch, they get involved with hosing down some rowdy steel at about the 5:00~ mark.

In all, lots of fun and you see the quick appeal of the gun when restored to its original format.

How about a Galil ARM light machine gun variant on full Freedom (VIDEO)

Thu, 06/07/2018 - 07:00

Quickly identified by its folding bipod and oversized wooden handguard, the ARM variant of the Galil was a potent light machine gun for the Israeli Defense Force and other users for a minute.

Larry Vickers has a real-deal IDF ARM complete with the teak wood grip and Hebrew characters on the receiver. With its 18-inch barrel and 1:12-twist, it goes cyclical at about 700 rounds per minute until the mag runs dry, which is why the IDF sometimes issued the ARM with 50-round mags.

And yes, it is unneutered.

Comparing a tailgate full of the hottest pistol caliber semi-auto subgun-like firearms out there (VIDEO)

Wed, 05/30/2018 - 10:00

Torn between a Sig MPX, Kriss Vector, Tactical Edge RD9 and a CZ Scorpion EVO? This is the video for you.

In the above, Parker Fawbush and buddy Jeff take a look at a four-pack of SMGish guns, shooting and handling each, then comparing their attributes against the price. Sure, they are not “stock” firearms as one of the EVOs is SBR’d and the other one is pretty tricked out, plus there are optics involved, but the overall platforms are the subject of the day, not accessories.

Which one would you pick for free with six mags?

Tool Time: Pitting everything but the kitchen sink against .308 AP rounds (VIDEO)

Thu, 05/24/2018 - 11:00

Using a Smith & Wesson M&P10 stoked with tracers and armor piercing rounds, hardened researchers put it to the penetration test against a variety of targets.

The Taofledermaus gang starts off with some AR500 armor braced with cement, a copper ingot and even an engine head from a West German NSU Prinz microcar. Then they tap in some household tools to include a hammer and crescent wrench before moving on to whatever else they could find.

Smoking through ballistic gel with the help of tracer rounds (VIDEO)

Tue, 05/22/2018 - 09:30

If you have ever been curious to see what tracers will do when fired into ballistic gel, we have you covered.

The above video comes from the gang at GY6 vids who tested the concept using .22LR, 9mm, and .45ACP rounds at various distances. A couple of take aways: the .22 Tommy gun looks like a lot of fun and a KRISS Vector in .45ACP seems like it eats gel like a monster.

Plus, there is the whole neat-o angle of how the tracer burns into the wound channel left by the projectile in the block.

With that being said, they have promised to bring on the rifle rounds in the next installment, so watch this space.

Exhibition shooters face off in some friendly competition (VIDEO)

Fri, 05/18/2018 - 04:00

A trio of some of the best trick shots in the business, 22Plinkster and the scattergun-wielding Gould brothers, see what each bring to the table.

The level the playing field, they start off with a massive Brno 7.5 FK pistol, then get some speed rounds in a 4-inch plate downrange from a .22, and work in some one-handed clays before finishing up with some modernized Annie Oakley classics. In short, while it may start off slow, it gets better.

Determination and enough firepower can eventually drill through an armored car door (VIDEO)

Tue, 05/15/2018 - 12:00

About 3-inches thick, the 200-pound door can take a lot of punishment from your average small arms — and we do mean “small” arms.

Matt at Demolition Ranch starts rimfire with an Amtac-suppressed Ruger MK IV .22 pistol and works his way up the ballistic food chain from there. Moving up, the door shrugs off an array of pistol rounds including from an FN 5.7 and a .50AE Deagle.

Then the gloves come off and the door proves to be pretty basic when confronted with rifle caliber rounds.

Now go and watch Heat again. You know you were thinking about it…

It’s crude, homemade and ugly but it gets the job done (VIDEO)

Thu, 05/10/2018 - 08:30

Declining to spend a few hundred bucks on a Shockwave, YouTube gun vlogger AK Custom crafted a 12 gauge non-NFA firearm with a 14-inch barrel.

Using much the same concept as Remington’s Tac-14 and Mossberg’s M590-S line, the wooden furniture of AK’s build somehow looks even less appealing than the synthetic polymer of the big name company’s gun– but it sure does seem to shoot well. Still, don’t try this at home and watch out for non-verbal screeching.

The CZ P-10C is nice, in a very G19 kinda way (VIDEO)

Tue, 05/01/2018 - 12:30

CZ-USA’s striker-fired compact polymer pistol brings 15+1 rounds of 9mm to the party and a grip angle that harkens back to the old CZ-75 days.

Introduced last year, these 26-ounce guns with a 4.02-inch barrel have been billed as “Glock killers” due to their similarity, spec-wise, to the vaunted G19 series. Whether there is any credence to that assertion is the subject of the above video review by the Mrgunsngear Channel, with the similarly sized Smith & Wesson M&P 2.0 Compact thrown into the mix as well.

A peek at a seriously modded Kel-Tec SU-16C in .300 BLK (VIDEO)

Wed, 04/25/2018 - 08:00

Michigan-based MDFI brought out a tweaked example of Kel-Tec’s Charlie variant “sport utility” rifle that has been converted to .300 Blackout.

Trexico with MDFI freely admits in the above video from Practically Tactical that his piston polymer rifle is not a “combat” gun and isn’t built for repetitive D60 mag dumps, but it’s lightweight and ideal for use as a backcountry gun when hiking. The upgrades include a barrel conversion from Barrel Boss, new sights, an AGP side folder stock, Magpul AK Zhukov forearm (note: it fits with no mods!) and a Griffin Armament Rev9 can.

Maybe not for everyone, but it does have a certain panache, and is pretty quiet to boot.

Thoughts on why standalone lights are still good for EDC (VIDEO)

Mon, 04/23/2018 - 14:00

Firearms instructor Steve Fisher of Sentinel Concepts discusses his feelings on filling your pockets for those unexpected low light situations.

In the above video put out by SureFire, Fisher talks about the benefits of a light that isn’t mounted on your handgun. Yes, he’s rocking shades, a 1911 in an OWB holster, and a subtle “I’m not a cop” look, but a lot of what he says makes sense.

“The gun will save your life but the light will save others,” says Fisher.

Showing off fireballs from some big-bore revolvers up close (VIDEO)

Mon, 04/23/2018 - 09:00

While many consider a .357 fairly stout, there is an entire category of revolvers out there that make that ole Magnum pale in comparison.

After talking merch for the first couple minutes, Matt with Demolition Ranch transitions to the wheelgun madness starting at about the 2:30 mark. Rolling with a .357 Smith for starters, he shows off a .410/.45LC Taurus Judge, an invisible .44 Mag, a .500 S&W Mag, and, after a bit of lead-up, a Magnum Research BFR in .45-70 Government.

Now that last one is a hoss, especially when you couple it with an Underwood +P 305-grain Xtreme Penetrator capable of generating something like 3,700 ft/lbs of energy at the muzzle. Then come the fireworks.

Reviewing the sometimes quirky but always interesting Kriss Vector (VIDEO)

Fri, 04/20/2018 - 07:00

The Kriss Vector is definitely in a class of its own when it comes to the current firearms market, and here is an in-depth look at one.

In the above review by the Last Line Of Defense channel, they go over the functionality of the gun and weigh in on the setup and deployment of the Vector from a backpack in particular. They do spend a lot of time detailing the reasoning behind the personal choice in accessorizing the exotic folder, but it all kind of flows together in the finished product.

Kicking the tires on Ruger’s new Security 9 pistol (VIDEO)

Wed, 04/18/2018 - 10:00

Ruger’s 15+1 Security 9 mid-sized pistol is a new sub-$400 entry to the crowded field of polymer-framed pistols, but how does it shoot?

Dubbed the Security 9 in an ode to the classic Ruger Security-Six revolver of the 1970s and 80s, the newest double-stack in the company’s catalog has a four-inch barrel and 7.24-inch overall length. Unlike popular striker-fired competitors in the $379 MSRP neighborhood, the Security 9 uses a hammer-fired system evolved from the one found on the LCP and LCP-II line but includes both a bladed trigger safety and a manual frame-mounted safety among a host of features.

Tim with the Military Arms Channel takes one right out of the box in the above video and gives it some proper attention.
