$100 Million East Texas Ammo Plant

Fri, 03/11/2022 - 09:35

According to Thomas Net, a former ammunition plant used by Uncle Sam will be retooled and updated so that it can serve as the new primer plant for Expansion Ammunition. Reportedly, the company is laying out $100 million to transform the old Lone Star Army Ammunition Plant in Hooks, Texas into a state-of-the-art facility.

The plant will focus on manufacturing the “primers” necessary for today’s modern cartridges. The primer is the part that ignites the powder inside of the cartridge, that in turn propels the bullet down the barrel and towards the target. It’s an essential part of every centerfire cartridge, and this new plant plans to churn them out by the millions. The company reportedly chose the former ammo plant not only because it was built with ammo manufacturing in mind, but because it was built to be able to withstand small explosions in the case of an accident.

Range vs. Carry Gear

Thu, 03/10/2022 - 09:36

Regular readers know I’m a huge fan of “consistency.” Reacting to a violent attack has enough problems without us creating more. For example, the “gun of the day” shooter who has a different type of handgun for each day of the week lacks consistency. Another inconsistency with concealed carry is too many variations on where and how the pistol is hidden. Then, there’s the shooter who takes one setup to the range for training or practice, and has a completely different getup for carry. To simplify our problem – stopping an attack – consistency is key, both on and off the range.

AFT Considering Modifications To Definition Of “Firearm”

Tue, 03/01/2022 - 13:16

Several large type-7 Federal Firearms Licensed manufacturers, The National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF), and Polymer80 met with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) today.

Although the detailed discussions of the meeting are unknown at this time, AmmoLand News received leaked emails from our sources that show that the ATF is seeking a new definition of a firearm. Joe Biden has targeted so-called “ghost guns” and semi-automatic rifles in recent days. Sources say he is pushing to accelerate those changes by using the ATF as a stop-gap for stalled federal legislation.

CA DOJ Wants Background Checks For Gun Parts

Mon, 02/28/2022 - 11:42

California will soon require every person who wishes to purchase a “firearm precursor part” to first undergo a background check process nearly identical to that which California currently uses for ammunition sales. The only problem is no one knows for certain what exactly is a “firearm precursor part.”

Ammunition Shortage Update

Wed, 01/26/2022 - 10:14

From our friends at Detroit Ammunition Company LLC:
Due to the shocking news gathered at Shot Show we wanted to update our followers regarding the continued ammo and component shortages. The ammo and primer markets seem to be taking a turn for the worse. Booths at Shot Show for imported ammo brands like Aguila, Magtech, Maxxtech, Sellier & Bellot, and PPU were mostly empty and all had similar things to say about ammo for the coming year.

Due to extreme shortages in powder and primers, brands like Sellier & Bellot and Magtech have stopped taking orders for components until 2023 because they won’t have enough components to load their own ammo. This will heavily impact the primer market in the USA as there will be very few imported primers to fill the void left by the domestic primer shortage. This will heavily affect small to midsize ammo manufacturers who rely on outside sources for components.

The possibility of Russia invading Ukraine, In addition to the component shortages, will have a massive impact on the 2022 ammo market. We expect all Russian imports of components and ammo to come to a halt immediately once the invasion occurs. With estimates being as high as 40% of the ammo sold in the USA being Russian, the price of ammo will skyrocket if this supply chain is closed.

What Is The New .30 Super Carry And Is It A Big Deal?

Wed, 01/19/2022 - 11:00

I don’t know that I get the .30 Super Carry as it seems to sit between .380ACP and 9mm (closer to 9mm than .380ACP). Almost seems like a solution looking for a problem, if I’m giving my unwanted and uninformed opinion.
