Ruger Redhawk .45 ACP/LC Revolver Review

Mon, 07/13/2015 - 09:12

.45 Colt is one of those rounds beloved by a dedicated group of followers, yet ignored by many shooters – especially new ones. This is unfortunate, since the round is tremendously powerful and incredibly versatile, with loadings ranging from those that nearly replicate the ballistics of a .44 Magnum and target loads with recoil like mild .38 Specials. The only issue? For the longest time, no revolver suitable for both hunting and home defense was chambered in it. At least, until the recent introduction of the newest Ruger Redhawk, chambered in both .45 Colt and .45 ACP.

Kimber Micro Raptor .380 Review

Fri, 06/26/2015 - 11:03

Kimber’s new Micro is an honest pocket pistol, a .380 that shares a lot of DNA with the Colt Mustang and SIG Sauer P238. It’s somewhat like a tiny 1911 in appearance and handling but different in engineering, and it feels like it was born in your hand. First announced in 2013, Kimber began shipping Micros last year in black, stainless and CDP configurations. For 2015 six souped-up models were added, including the Raptor tested for this article.

Ammo Shelf: SIG Sauer Elite Performance Ammo

Wed, 06/24/2015 - 12:08

SIG Sauer is now making ammo. Your first thought is probably, “Sure, now that ammo is really expensive, why wouldn’t they?” Well, that is part of it, but not for the reason you think. SIG wants you to have ammo as reliable as its pistols, and if you are scouring every gun shop, sporting goods store and bait shop within the radius of a half tank of gas of your home, you probably are using some pretty sketchy ammo at times.

North American Arms Pug Review

Tue, 06/09/2015 - 09:00

The increase in issuance of concealed carry permits over the last decade has prompted gunmakers to produce lighter, more compact handguns for the burgeoning CCW market. But shrinking firearms to fit in a pocket, purse or IWB holster generates a whole host of engineering challenges such as mitigating recoil and controlling muzzle rise. Component parts must be lighter to keep bulk to a minimum, yet the gun must be mechanically sound and reliable. Entire firing systems must fit in cramped spaces. So while the boom in CCW permits created a large and growing market for gunmakers, it also presented new challenges.

Best Big-Bore Handguns of All Time

Wed, 05/27/2015 - 13:38

Ever since gunpowder was invented, shooters have been making handguns with the biggest hole down the barrel that they could safely shoot. Early horse pistols and backup hunting sidearms tended to swallow projectiles the size of large marbles, and they spit them back out with admirable gusto upon request. The thrill of shooting a really big bullet has never diminished, even though most of today’s personal protection sidearms are wonders of efficiency and comfort.

Taurus Curve Review

Tue, 05/26/2015 - 12:52

Once or twice a year when a company wants to show off a new product to gun writers but still keep it secret, it has them sign a non-disclosure agreement, and that gets me excited because it means the company is going to be showing us something not just new but probably different.
