Shooting Myths: A Laser Will Just Give Away Your Position

Tue, 04/08/2014 - 07:31

I've been a big fan of lasers on handguns for years. At first, this was because they sounded great on paper. After actually running around shooting in the dark at various training events and nocturnal competitions, my “fanboy” meter has maxed out. But to be really clear, I want to stress that I am talking about gun laser applications for home defense and self-defense. Not door kicking in Afghanistan. Or serving no-knock warrants with the Department of Education’s new SWAT Team. Or anything else “offensive.” See what I did there? I've had all sorts of responses to Read more »

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) recently released its 2013-2014 Winter Severity Index (WSI), which measures how the season affected wildlife in the state. The results were grim, and many regions of the state marked 2014 as the worst winter for deer and turkeys in Wisconsin's history. Biologists expected large die-offs, but as time progresses, some experts are saying that wildlife mortality may be lower than predicted. One of those experts is DNR wildlife biologist Greg Kessler, who told the Read more »

Road exhaustion has taken over your incessant ingestion of caffeinated drinks, lowering you into such a somnambulistic state that the thought of the world behind is only a distant memory; the lights of the city linger in your eyes like the trail of a satellite entering the atmosphere. But there is still hope because some kind of not-too-distant future lies just beyond the myriad of bright city lights. Then you finally pass through the quiet city into Nebraska, anticipating a chance...

Video: Bowhunter Makes Extraordinary Miss on Large Buck

Mon, 04/07/2014 - 15:08

This video taken several years ago shows a bowhunter missing his first shot on a nice-sized buck. Technically, it wasn't a miss at all.  When the deer breaks cover, you can clearly see the arrow lodged in its rack. The buck then proceeds to stare the hunter down before wisely fleeing. While it is not clear whether the bowhunter ultimately was able to bring the deer home, it would sure be a strange shed to find later on. http://youtu.be/ZD4y9p7mqFA Shooting a buck's antlers is apparently not as rare as one would think, which the crew of Backwoods Life attributes to pure buck...
