Harvesting of oyster shut down

Fri, 10/30/2015 - 09:59

Thirty of the 35 oyster harvesting areas along the Texas Cost will be closed come November 1st, due to a variety of dangerous conditions found by the Coastal Fisheries Division of the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department.

The Texas Department of State Health Services is enforcing these closures and alerted the public Thursday.

Officials found dangerous and possibly fatal red tide toxins. The possible flesh-eating bacteria from the recent rain runoff, and shrinking oyster populations forced the health department to close most locations.

Some experts said the affected areas could open as early as mid-November or as late as Christmas Day.
