N.J. lawmakers may scrap controversial ‘smart gun’ law

Wed, 05/13/2015 - 11:57

It appears that New Jersey elected officials are considering eliminating legislation that mandates smart gun technology. Claude Brodesser-Akner for NJ Advance Media reports:

The lawmakers say they want to replace or change the Childproof Gun Law with a measure that encourages rather than requires gun shops to sell “smart guns” — and provides economic incentives for Garden State consumers to buy them.

Passed in 2002 to respond to accidental child deaths from guns, the law’s mandates for gun sales were supposed to kick in three years after the weapons became available for retail purposes. However, it hasn’t resulted in the sale of smart guns and instead moved gun rights activists to intimidate gun shops around the country not to carry them because that would start the countdown clock for the New Jersey law…..

….Speaking in Dover, N.H., at a 2016-themed town hall meeting last week, Gov. Chris Christie had singled out the Childproof Gun Law for special scorn, holding it up as the epitome of Democratic legislative overreach.

Small business owner says bank denied service because she sells guns

Wed, 05/13/2015 - 10:29

Yesterday, Kelsey Harkness for the Daily Signal reported that:

A small business owner from Central Florida alleges she was denied service by one of the largest banks in the United States strictly because she sells guns.

“It’s a slap in the face,” Peggy Craig, owner of Michael’s Pawn and Gun in Fruitland Park, Fla., told The Daily Signal in an exclusive interview. “It affects my livelihood, it affects how I feel, and I think it’s total bias and discrimination.”

On May 7, Craig called TD Bank seeking a new line of credit to buy inventory and produce advertisements for her small, 23-year-old storefront, Michael’s Pawn and Gun.

When a TD Bank representative pulled up the shop’s Facebook page and discovered that it sells guns, Craig says the representative told her, “We can’t lend to anyone who sells firearms.”

Annual gun rights rally draws hundreds to Pa. Capitol

Tue, 05/12/2015 - 18:57

The Associated Press reported today:

HARRISBURG, Pa. —A few hundred gun rights activists brought their message to what has become an annual event at the state Capitol, urging lawmakers on Tuesday to protect their right to keep and own firearms and to widen legal protections.

The crowd at the Second Amendment Action Day reacted strongly to warnings about threats to gun rights, as speakers peppered their remarks with references to northeastern states, President Barack Obama and Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Rodham Clinton.

“I feel that they’re trying to take my gun rights away from us,” said Harry Norton, a retired over-the-road trucker from New Brighton. “I’m here to kind of protect that.”

….Kim Stolfer, with Firearm Owners Against Crime, called gun control an abridgment of freedom that makes people less safe. He said some local leaders need to be replaced.

Scalise bill to ease interstate gun sales labeled dangerous by gun control advocate

Tue, 05/12/2015 - 18:47

Bruce Alpert for NOLA.com reported today:

WASHINGTON – House Majority Whip Steve Scalise, R-Jefferson, has introduced legislation that would make it easier for licensed gun dealers to sell guns to out-of-state buyers.

But a leading gun control advocate says the legislation “would make it even more difficult for federal and state law enforcement to identify individuals who are already prohibited from purchasing firearms.”

Scalise, a long-time supporter of gun rights, said the legislation is designed to eliminate “archaic red tape burdening gun owners who legally purchase firearms across the nation.” And his staff says that the legislation does nothing to intefere with state laws — including specific background checks required by some states.

Oregon governor signs bill requiring background check on nearly all gun buyers

Tue, 05/12/2015 - 10:41

Reuters reported today on the new background check law in Oregon:

The Oregon Firearms Safety Act expands background check requirements, already in place at stores and gun shows in the state, to include person-to-person and online gun sales.

“The bill provides a common-sense approach to accomplishing that goal without interfering with the lawful right of citizens to bear arms,” said Brown, a Democrat who took office in February after her predecessor resigned in an influence-peddling scandal.

The bill provides several exemptions, including gun loans for usage at shooting ranges or for hunting, or transfers between family members.

Supporters say that tighter background checks are key to preventing violence by people already prohibited from owning guns, such as those with domestic violence or felony convictions.

It was vehemently opposed however by gun rights advocates and the state Republican Party, which decried as excessive the fines and potential jail time violators could face.
