Lueders: In Challenging Limits on Gun Rights, GOP Uses Creative Solutions to Imaginary Problems

Wed, 05/31/2023 - 10:00

Throughout the nation, states with Republican governors and GOP-led legislatures are tapping deep into the political zeitgeist and availing themselves of the opportunities of the moment to devise and execute creative solutions to imaginary problems. Here is a rundown of some of those efforts. …

Imaginary problem: It is just too difficult to obtain and bear firearms in the United States.

Unnecessary solution: Take aim at existing gun laws.

NAGR Sues to Overturn Massachusetts ‘Assault Weapons’ Ban

Tue, 05/30/2023 - 16:00

Massachusetts never liked the fact that the federal “assault weapons” ban was allowed to sunset in 2004. In response, the Bay State enacted its own AWB, signed into law by then-governor Mitt Romney. In 2016, in the aftermath of the Pulse and San Bernardino shootings, then-Attorney General (now Governor) Maura Healey unilaterally declared virtually every firearm sold in the state after the federal AWB ended was considered a “copycat” weapon, thus making them (and almost all semi-automatic rifles) illegal.

Gun Review: FN SCAR 15P Pistol in 5.56 NATO

Tue, 05/30/2023 - 14:00

With its complete lack of a stock and a 7.5″ barrel, the FN SCAR 15P is the best pistol in its class.

The super short rifle-caliber pistol autoloader class isn’t a big one, but it’s growing. That said, there are a whole lot of misconceptions about super short-barreled pistols and rifles in 5.56NATO.

One of these seems to be that weapons like this are common among low visibility military units or personal protective details.

Even More Than the Old Boss: Chicago Has Worst Memorial Day Weekend Violence in Over a Decade

Tue, 05/30/2023 - 12:00

Chicago’s latest feckless Mayor “Let’s Go” Brandon Johnson formulated a new strategy to tamp down the city’s historically horrific violent crime that spikes over the Memorial Day weekend and carries through the summer each year. His plan: dispatch thirty unarmed, yellow-vested “peacekeepers” to high crime neighborhoods to try to, well, keep the peace. Mayor Johnson combined that with fewer overtime hours for actual cops (the ones with with guns) to be on patrol.

Self Defense Chronicles: 77-Year-Old Ann Arbor Home Owner Uses His Gun to Scare Off a Home Invader

Tue, 05/30/2023 - 10:00

Don’t mess with an old guy. That’s good advice and a message that an Ann Arbor, Michigan criminal got loud and clear last week when he made the mistake of crawling into a 77-year-old man’s house through a kitchen window. “I don’t look for trouble,” the homeowner said. “It found me.”

When he heard the criminal, the man went to investigate.

Face to face with his intruder, he yelled and then pulled out his pistol.

Honoring Those Who Gave Their Lives to Protect Our Freedoms

Mon, 05/29/2023 - 10:00

For some, Memorial Day is the kickoff of summer. Vacations are planned, backyard grilling and warm days with friends and family are in the works. It’s also a day of honoring those who gave their lives in service to our nation so we can enjoy our freedoms.

We, the firearm industry, pause to honor these men and women. We also rededicate ourselves to living lives worthy of their sacrifice. We mourn the loss but we celebrate that we had men and women such as these among us, even if it was for a short time.

Memorial Day Isn’t a Day of Mourning, It’s a Day of Commemoration

Mon, 05/29/2023 - 08:00

I have never been able to think of the day as one of mourning; I have never quite been able to feel that half-masted flags were appropriate on Decoration Day. I have rather felt that the flag should be at the peak, because those whose dying we commemorate rejoiced in seeing it where their valor placed it. We honor them in a joyous, thankful, triumphant commemoration of what they did.

Things That Don’t Suck: Xtech Tactical MTX 365 +3 Magazine Extension for P365

Sun, 05/28/2023 - 16:00

The main draw of the Xtech Tactical MTX 365 +3 baseplate for your SIG SAUER P365 is the same draw of the P365 itself. In 2018 SIG hit the concealed carry market with a sledgehammer and all but killed the single stack 9mm pistol in one foul blow. Now everyone wants a micro-compact and just about everyone makes one.

Shooters and concealed carriers appreciate the small size and decent capacity the guns offers.

Inside ‘The Vault’ of the National Museum of the Marine Corps

Sun, 05/28/2023 - 13:00

By Mark Oliva

Memorial Day holds special meaning to the firearms industry. Like nearly all Americans, we pause to remember and honor those whose lives were sacrificed defending our freedoms.

For firearms manufacturers, the small arms the fallen carried into battle remind us of the unique connection of those in uniform and our industry.

There’s a collection of these firearms that has special meaning to Marines tucked away in a nondescript brick building at Marine Corps Base Quantico.

Desert Tech: Bullpup Rifles That Defy Bullpup Stereotypes

Sun, 05/28/2023 - 10:00

Bullpups don’t always get a lot of love for reasons most people who’ve shot them already know. First and foremost, their triggers are uniformly awful. That’s because of all the linkage required between the trigger itself and the sear that’s located all the way back behind the magazine…which is under your chin.

That magazine placement results in the second biggest gripe bullpup detractors have: slow and awkward magazine changes. Those two factors — not to mention the fact that bullpups are generally heavier — are a lot to overcome, even though the bullpup design has a lot going for it, primarily its wonderfully compact overall length and the resulting excellent maneuverability that gives you.

Fifth Circuit Clarifies That Pistol Brace Injunction Covers Named Plaintiffs and All FPC Members

Sat, 05/27/2023 - 13:00

Earlier this week, the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals issued an injunction blocking enforcement of the ATF’s pistol brace ban until the case can be decided. But as Jeremy pointed out in our earlier post, the order only applied to the named plaintiffs in the suit.

The Firearms Policy Coalition, one of those named plaintiffs, petitioned the court for clarification and yesterday, they got it. The injunction does, in fact, only cover the plaintiffs in the suit.

From the AP . . .

A police officer accidentally fired his gun inside a school bathroom earlier this week while trying to holster the weapon, escalating the law enforcement response for what turned out to be a hoax school shooting, authorities in Massachusetts said.

Some students at St. John’s Prep in Danvers ran into the nearby woods while panicked parents rushed to the school on Monday after a report of someone with a gun on campus.

Guns Rights and Marijuana Use: The Times May Finally Be A-Changin’

Fri, 05/26/2023 - 16:00

By: C.D. Michel

In a 2021 article for California NORML, I discussed how federal gun laws intersect with California’s legalization of recreational marijuana use. In that article, I examined Ninth Circuit authority holding that federal law makes it illegal for all marijuana users to possess a firearm.

Since then, however, Second Amendment rights jurisprudence has developed rapidly. In June 2022, the Supreme Court issued its decision in New York State Rifle & Pistol Association v.

Science: JAMA Authors Based Their Analysis On Debunked ‘Gun Violence’ Data

Fri, 05/26/2023 - 14:00

By Lee Williams

The first edition of the Journal of the American Medical Association was published July 14, 1883. It contained a transcript of the annual address then-AMA president, Dr. W. Brodie, made during the group’s annual meetings in Cleveland, Ohio. Brodie told the delegates that, “in the very near future, if not now, cremation will become a sanitary necessity in the large cities and populous districts of the country.”

Today, JAMA is published 48 times a year and has become one of the world’s most prominent peer-reviewed medical journals, known for its research, news and editorials.

Fri, 05/26/2023 - 12:00

By Brett Klein

Ever since John Moses Browning graced us with the 1911 pistol design over a century ago, countless manufacturers have been smitten, trying their darndest to perfect a design that is much like the Queen of England was – it just won’t change. Now, cue the entrance of Nighthawk Custom. They’ve made a name for themselves with an almost stubborn commitment to their “One Gun, One Gunsmith” philosophy. This approach ensures that each firearm they produce is a one-of-a-kind masterpiece — every meticulous stroke and adjustment crafted by a single maestro from start to finish.

Cook County Court Rules Chicago Has No Jurisdiction to Sue Indiana Retailer for Guns Used to Commit Crimes in the City

Fri, 05/26/2023 - 10:00

Cities with significant violent crime problems seem to be able to devote far more resources to going after lawful gun owners, retailers, and manufacturers than they are toward arresting and jailing violent recidivist felons. You might think a city with a persistent crime problem — one like, say, Chicago — would use as much of its time and money to incarcerate the relatively few criminals who comprise the majority of their violent crime problem.

You’d be wrong.

BREAKING: New Jersey Has Enacted the Largest Gun Ban in US History

Thu, 05/25/2023 - 18:01

Our friends at Ammoland, who are based in the gun rights hell that is New Jersey, have uncovered what appears to be a little-known aspect of a gun control law that passed and was signed into law last June. They’ve just published an article by attorney Evan Nappen who has read the law closely and discovered that — intentionally or not — it’s actually the biggest gun ban ever enacted in these here United States.
