Quote of the Day: Cultural Disconnect Edition

Tue, 12/23/2014 - 08:00

“Despite a long-standing decline in violent crime and recent political victories for gun regulation in Washington State and elsewhere, gun culture in the U.S. continues to grow more aggressive. If the recent Pew survey is correct, it may also be growing more popular. The new surgeon general unquestionably has a public-health menace on his hands. The rest of us are confronting a cultural disconnect. But no matter how you characterize the problem, it’s guaranteed to kill many more people.” – Francis Wilkinson in The NRA is still winning on guns [at post-gazette.com]

CA AG, City of LA and LAPD “Remind Gun Purchasers of their Legal Responsibilities”

Mon, 12/22/2014 - 20:00

Reader Matt writes:

I received a surprising notice from the city and attorney general today. I submitted my DROS at the gun store earlier this week, and this notice came very quickly. I can attest that whatever policy initiated the sending of such letters is new — as of the last four months — as my previous purchase didn’t lead to such a letter.

It Should Have Been a Defensive Gun Use: Bada Bing Edition

Sun, 12/21/2014 - 20:00

“At 4:43 a.m. on Sunday December 21, 2014 the Lodi Police Department responded to the Satin Dolls located at 230 Route 17 South in the Borough of Lodi to investigate a reported robbery,” the LPD press release reveals. “It was determined that two men armed with shotguns entered the premises and robbed the business of approximately $30,000.00 dollars. The actors then fled in an unknown direction.” Actors? That’s funny! The Sopranos used the Satin Dolls club as the set for the Bada-Bing Club. If the shotgun guys had [been fictional and] burst in on Tony et al., there would have been a total different denouement. Know what I mean?
