Post Your Message to Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America Here

Tue, 01/28/2014 - 15:00

Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America (a wholly owned subsidiary of Mike Bloomberg’s Mayors Against Illegal Guns) reads your pro-gun rights comments when you post them on their Facebook page. And then deletes them. And bans you. For example, they sent TTAG reader Tivadar Lucas‘ comment [above] into the memory hole and hit the block button. Of course MDA has no legal obligation to publish dissenting opinions. But it is annoying that a group that

BREAKING: Shots Fired at Honolulu High School

Tue, 01/28/2014 - 14:28

“Shots were fired Tuesday morning at a Hawaii high school, causing injuries and prompting a lockdown, authorities said. Honolulu Department of Emergency Services spokeswoman Shayne Enright said the shooting happened at Roosevelt High School in Honolulu. No additional details about the injuries or shooter were released. Police and Department of Education officials didn’t immediately respond to messages seeking comment from the Associated Press.” That’s from detroitnews.com.

Cannon Dual-Access EMP Lock: For When The Grid Goes Dark

Tue, 01/28/2014 - 14:00

If you’re worried about an EMP taking out the grid and taking down all of your electronics at the same time, you probably don’t have a quick-access electronic lock on your gun safe. Which means your gun safe is pretty slow to access, and pretty much impossible to open in the dark. If that description fits you, Cannon Safe Company might have just what you need . . .

Their Commander, Cannon, and Armory safe lines are now offered with their unique dual access EMP lock. As the picture shows, it combines the speedy tactile opening of an electronic lock with the EMP- and flood-proof reliability of a mechan

Rockethub Funding for 80% Lowers: Crash and Burn

Tue, 01/28/2014 - 13:00

A regular reader writes:

I’ve been following the rockethub.com funding of 80 percent lowers for some time now.  [ED: 80 percent lowers are the unfinished lower receivers for AR-15 rifles that do not have to be registered with the federal government, which recipients complete to create a legal, unregistered firearm.] A LOT of the projects have turned into complete crap storms. Multiple projects have gone way, way over what they were trying to fund (i.e. trying to fund $10k, make $220k) and nobody has gotten anything. There are now rumors amongst funders and on forums that Rockethub is pulling 80 percent firearms projects due to the complete failure of most of the projects. Question of the Day: Can America Be Disarmed?

Tue, 01/28/2014 - 12:00

Billy Johnson makes the case that there are only two ways to grab Americans’ guns: 1) abandon the republican principles on which the nation was founded, or 2) voluntary disarmament. Under number one has the .gov declaring gun owners enemies of the state. A threat to law, order, peace and tranquility. And Mr. Johnson says our representatives lack the power and the right to do it. As for number two, good luck with that. Ultimately, in his view, the responsibility for holding our elected officials accountable for their RKBA infringing tendencies, something that seems to work better in some locales than others. But back to the original question. Billy is of the opinion that our government can’t disarm us. You?

Gear Preview: RADETEC LED Advisor

Tue, 01/28/2014 - 11:00

I love shooting guns, but rarely does something gun-related give me the giggles. Several exceptions naturally apply. Full auto, silenced and subsonic .300 BLK shooting and Tannerite come to mind. And I’ve found another giggle-worthy item: the RADETEC LED Advisor . . .

See the video above for a demo of the product that straps to your gun and lets you know when you’re running low on lead. I can’t stop running snap caps through my pistol and giggling. It lights up! Is it worth $169? Does it work under actual shooting conditions? Will it break immediately?

I don’t know! But I’m headed to the range to find out. Watch this space to stay up to date.

Gun Joke of the Day: Long Shot Edition

Tue, 01/28/2014 - 10:00

Three friends were getting ready to tee off on the golf course when a single guy walked up and asked if he could join them. They agreed to make it a foursome. While waiting to tee it up on the fourth hole, a par five, one of the three asked the stranger what he did for a living. He replied that he was an assassin. They all stopped and stared at him. He told them not to worry, that none of them were his targets . . .

They asked him how he usually killed people and he pulled an AI rifle in .308 with a Nightforce scope out of his golf bag. The three admired the fine gun and Bill asked if he could look through the scope as his house was near the next green, about 500 yards away. The assassin said sure, and handed the rifle to Bill.

The Lost Art of Dueling with Pistols

Tue, 01/28/2014 - 09:00

by Alan Brooks

Pistol duels have largely gone out of style in the United States. The modern version of “Sir, I demand satisfaction!” is now “You’ll be hearing from my lawyer.” And that’s probably for the best. By the end of the 19th century, advances in firearms technology had made pistol duels unsporting. Machined, multi-shot guns with rifled barrels and reliable cartridges meant that both parties in a duel stood a good chance of dying. During the heyday of duels in the United States (the 18th and early 19th centuries) dueling pistols were handmade and generally smoothbore, single-shot, black powder, flint-lock devices that were “sporting” at the typical 30-40 foot distance at which most duels were fought . . .

Often, the duelers didn’t even fir

Quote of the Day: Self Awareness Edition

Tue, 01/28/2014 - 08:00

“Perhaps it’s not about knowing who the bad guys are, but knowing ourselves, which offers our best protection. Which is, after all, the fundamental mission of higher learning. Those kinds of insights can’t really be learned at gunpoint.” – NPR host Jacki Lyden, Violence Abroad Threatens Students, As Do Guns At U.S. Schools [at npr.org}

Defensive Gun Use of the Day: Making Lemonade Edition

Mon, 01/27/2014 - 22:00

From wect.com, we get word of some weekend Tar Heel tomfoolery: “Some quick thinking got a Wilmington man out of a tough situation early Saturday morning. Around 3 a.m. Saturday morning, the victim came home and noticed his front door was open. When he entered his home — ” Wait, what? The un-named dood rolls in at zero dark thirty, finds his front door open and…strolls in anyway? Hold on, it gets better . . .

Once inside, he found two intruders looking for easily pawnable property. Thinking fast, he did a little soft shoe.

The man pretended to be drunk long enough to get to his safe and pull out a gun. One suspect ran away and the victim held the other suspect at gunpoint outside his apartment. He then told the suspect to leave.

Moms visited the Madison, TN, Staples today, to ask their corporate office to go gun-free nation-wide. The manager told us she carries at all times. Just so you know. — with Adolf Hitler, Joseph Stalin and Benito Mussolini. I’m not sure which is better. The “carries at all times” part or the “someone tagged them as Hitler, Stalin, and Mussolini in the photo” part. (I wish I could have seen the look on their faces for the first one, though.) The post is here, though I’m guessing it will get scrubbed very soon. . .

Incendiary Image of the Day: Cognitive Dissonance Edition

Mon, 01/27/2014 - 20:00

I almost feel sorry for businessweek.com. It can’t be easy covering the firearms industry or gun control-related issues when your boss is the country’s most rabid proponent of civilian disarmament. Bloomberg’s tasked Paul Barrett, author of Glock, America’s Gun, with the job. As I pointed out in my review of his book, Barrett “supports passing laws to address boss Bloomberg’s pet peeve: ‘closing the gun show loophole’ (mandating FBI background checks for private sales) and ‘ballistic fingerprinting’ (creating a system to

It Should Have Been a Defensive Gun Use: Mugged by Reality Edition

Mon, 01/27/2014 - 19:00

You know the old Irving Kristol saw: a (neo)conservative is a liberal who’s been mugged by reality. Another truism: there’s no zealot like a convert. But does the same thing translate to gun rights? Is a pro-2A supporter a gun grabber who’s been (literally) mugged? Unfortunately for Jon Fogg, we may have a perfect case study to see if Kristol’s theory holds true where armed self defense is concerned. Fogg, an editor at the Baltimore Sun, was coming home late from work on January 14 when he was allegedly met on the street by Mustafa Eraibi, who demanded his cash . . .

Moms Demand Action Use MD Mall Shooting to Call for More Gun Control

Mon, 01/27/2014 - 18:00

The Moms Demand Action crowd keep demanding the same thing every time there’s an incident with a firearm that gains national attention: more restrictions on gun ownership. They don’t even bother to investigate whether their proposed action would have any impact on the tragedy they’re exploiting. They just assume that making it harder for Americans to own guns is the panacea that will solve the “gun violence epidemic” that they say is the biggest problem facing the country. There’s just one small issue: in this case, the shooter was a completely normal American with no criminal history or mental health issues . . .

Just Arrived: GLOCK 42

Mon, 01/27/2014 - 17:00

O-M-G! Can you be-lieve the mad marketing mavens at GLOCK thought people would actually carry a massive gat like the 42? Still, against all odds, the new example of Perfection seems to be all the rage. For some reason. Our friends at The Kentucky Gun Company were nice enough to zip one out to me. And when I picked it up at Top Gun Shooting Sports this morning, one employee walking past stopped dead in his tracks and said, “Hey, is that the new GLOCK?” and eagerly checked it out. Then another told me that everyone who works there wants to shoot it when I take ‘er out on the range for a test drive. But as you can see above, it’s far too big for any normal toter to carry comfortably. Still, I’ve recruited Dirk Diggler to help me b

Debunking Another Anti-Gun Agitprop Study on “Young People”

Mon, 01/27/2014 - 16:00

Gun control advocates’ studies constantly evoke the Talking Heads’ song Crosseyed and Painless. They want the facts to show that “gun violence” is killing children in droves. But the facts don’t do what they want them to. Firearms-related deaths amongst children – defined as someone under the age of 13 – are statistically insignificant (58 i

TTAG Exclusive: Kirsten Joy Weiss G.I. JOE Movie Tribute Trick Shot

Mon, 01/27/2014 - 15:00

I’ve said it before. I’ll say it again. When it comes to “performance shooting” no one can hold a candle to Kirsten Joy Weiss. Oh sure, there are plenty of sharp shots out there, somewhere. But no other trick shot artist brings KJW’s sense of style, fun and accuracy to the task. It’s only a matter of time before The Bigs come a-calling. Oh wait. They already have. While I can’t divulge the mainstream media opportunities on the table for Ms. Weiss, suffice it to say it’s only a matter of time before she’ll be bringing the pro-gun message to a whole new audience: men, women and children who’ve never shot a gun. KJW is exactly what the The People of the Gun need: a non-threatening ambassador who can de-evil-ize firearms for the masses. We’re still at the point where you can say “I knew Kirsten Joy Weiss way back when.” But those days are numbered. Enjoy.

How It Works: The Gilboa Snake Side-By-Side AR

Mon, 01/27/2014 - 13:00

When I first saw the Gilboa Snake, I had… questions. Like, how the hell does the thing work? And it turns out that thanks to the ATF, there are actually two versions now going into production: a single trigger “machine gun” design and a split trigger civilian version. But the main difference between the two models isn’t actually the trigger at all, but the gas system . . .

The original design used a pretty interesting firing mechanism. The single trigger doesn’t fire both barrels — it’s only connected to the hammer on the left barrel.

The idea is that the trigger sets off the round on the left side, and the gun uses the gas system from that barrel to actuate the sear on the right barrel. So while you might think that both barrels w
