Handgun Barrel Length: What’s Best For You?

Sat, 04/09/2016 - 14:08

How do you determine the proper handgun barrel length for you?

Whether it’s a pistol or a revolver, the length of the barrel impacts in a number of things and should be taken into consideration when choosing the right gun for you.

Longer barrels do tend to offer more accuracy but longer barrels are harder to hide in a concealed application. Another advantage of a longer barrel is target visibility and sight alignment.

All things being equal, a revolver will generally be shorter than a semiauto pistol because of the way the guns function.

Determining what the proper handgun barrel length for your needs starts with determining what you intend to use the handgun for. For top-end accuracy at the range, a longer barrel (and thus heavier) handgun will do the job better. But if you intend to carry concealed, a smaller-framed, shorter-barrel model will weigh less, be easier to hide and more comfortable to wear.

Options Abound in Taurus Revolvers

Sat, 04/09/2016 - 14:03

Taurus revolvers are popular with shooters for good reason — they’re affordably priced and you have no shortage of options.

Guns & Ammo’s experts check out some of the lineup available from Taurus revolvers and have no trouble finding plenty of options in an array of sizes, calibers and configurations.

They start with the diminutive Model 605 in .357 (which also works with .38 Special). As much attention as compact semi-autos get today, snub-nosed pistols are still a great option for carry guns.

The Taurus Model 627 Tracker is also available in .357 Magnum and features a ported barrel, ribbed grip and an increased capacity of seven rounds, making it a good backpacking option.

They also check out one of Taurus’ most popular models in the Taurus Judge which can shoot either .410 shotshells or .45 Colt.

In The Vault: Guns and Ammo in Iraq

Sat, 04/02/2016 - 16:20

Guns and Ammo takes a visit to Iraq to experience what our troops endure while deployed. In this 2008 video, we revisit the experience.

Guns and Ammo writer David Fortier was embedded with the 37th Cavalary out of Georgia. After flying into Kuwait, he proceeded into Iraq and joined the troops near Baghdad.

Fortier remarked on the extreme weather conditions the troops face with daytime temps topping 130 degrees being the norm.

Fortier’s goal was to chronicle exactly what U.S. troops were doing in Iraq and whether negative media portrayals were accurate. What he found was a group of young soldiers conducting their business in a professional, efficient manner and making a real difference for Iraqi citizens.

Learning to Shoot With Your Weak Hand

Sun, 03/27/2016 - 11:45

Learning to shoot with your weak hand is an important step. But do you really have a “weak” hand?

Our experts want to change the terminology. Learning to shoot with your weak hand simply means learning to utilize your “support” hand differently.

You may not always have your dominant hand available in all situations. Whether it’s injury or situational, being able to shoot with either hand is an important skill. Shooting with your support isn’t as difficult as you might think.

Like all good handgun skills, it starts with the grip. Learning to properly grip your weapon with both your dominant and support hand is the first step to learning to shoot with your weak hand.

And like all good handgun skills, you’ll need plenty of practice to realize there is no such thing as a strong hand or weak hand.

Vault: Close-Range Shooting

Sun, 03/27/2016 - 11:39

Close-range shooting requires a steady hand and a sight picture that’s quick and easy to acquire.

In the video, Kyle Lamb and Craig Boddington discuss the options for close-range shooting with an emphasis on dangerous game enounters.

Close-range shooting was once accomplished with rifles fitted with iron sights. Today, optics have become commonplace and specialized optics are designed to be bright and quick to aim while maintaining plenty of eye relieft.

Shooting at charging targets is excellent practice for many close-range shooting situations and can illustrate how quickly a scope can be when acquiring a target at minimal distances. In many situations, an optic is superior to iron sights due to its ease of use and is easier on aging eyes.
