There’s ‘posed to be a post…

Fri, 05/27/2016 - 17:00

We’re sure there is. The 1800 Friday post. It was right here a moment ago, and then, and then…

Well, it’s jolly well missing now, isn’t.

No it isn’t, this post is there.

This post? What, are we in a post?

I’m afraid so.

Isn’t that a bad thing? When posts become self-aware?

Not really. If you keep a proper sense of humility about yourself, and don’t go getting a swollen head.

So … we’re inside a computer? Like, a simulation? Like The Matrix?

Oh, lighten up, Francis. The Matrix seemed like a new idea in Hollywood, but that’s because those guys are all baked all the time. The old “we’re in a simulation, waaah,” shtick was old and a cliché when Joe Haldeman did it, and he’s dead.

Haldeman, wasn’t he one of Nixon’s…

Different Haldeman. Never mind. And actually, now that I think about it, he’s not dead. Nixon’s Haldeman is.

Anyway, if the computers are sentient….

Yes?

Bad things happen. All the time.

This is not Skynet, you know. It’s just a blog.

Thank you for clearing that up.

Sunday Scheduippage

Sun, 05/22/2016 - 08:00

What, you may ask, is “Scheduippage”? Well, it’s schedule slippage, and we’ve had it pretty badly this past week. Indeed this post is hours late and the two last Saturday posts are not done.

Thanks to a cheap-n-easy video post, at least tomorrow will start on schedule.

Wednesday Weapons Website of the Week: Christo’s Military and Intelligence Corner

Wed, 03/09/2016 - 21:00

Today has been a travel day, and we’re still a bit behind, so this is going to be brief: the Wednesday Weapons Website of the Week is more an intel website than a weapons one. (So sue us. We’re 18F as well as 18B around here). But you’re really going to like it.

It’s Christo’s Military and Intelligence Corner.

Christo is an avid student of intelligence history, as you can see by a couple of recent post titles:

As can be seen from these examples, the site is full of serious, quality scholarship on subjects that remain of great interest to us today, many decades later.

Revolvers Never Die: They Just Keep Getting Bigger!

Sat, 02/20/2016 - 05:00

Here’s a single-action revolver… in .600 Nitro Express, an African big- and dangerous-game cartridge normally delivered by massive double rifles.  It’s the biggest cartridge revolver we’ve ever seen.

It was designed by Franz-Josef (Joe) Peters. And why did we specify “cartridge”? Because Ryszard Tobys of Poland took a Remington cap-and-ball revolver and blew it up, in the sense of “magnification,” not “detonation.” From Russia Today:

Pan Tobys took 2500 hours — equivalent to a year and three months of full-time work — to machine this Goliath of revolvers from scratch. No word on what reloading data he uses, only that the lead bullets are 136 g (about 2100 grains, 10 times the mass of your basic .338 LM projectile).

Just the ticket — for Jurassic Game Park. Elmer Keith, eat your heart out.

Hidden Camera: Automatic Weapons with No Background Check!

Fri, 01/29/2016 - 05:00

Steven Crowder goes undercover to find the “automatic weapons without background checks” at gun shows or dealers, that folks like Mike Bloomberg, Hillary Clinton, Martin O’Malley (who’s he?) and some guy with the funny name Obama insist he can.

Oddly enough, Crowder does not succeed in his quest.

“I need a gun, like, now! Will you sell me one without a background check?”

“No way.”

“Sonofableeep.

Best part of the video is, in our opinion, some of the clips of politicians saying absolutely inane things about guns and the gun market.

It’s entertaining for how creeped out people get by his repeated requests that they break the law for him. At one point, he’s telling a woman that he can’t pass a background check because he… well, you gotta watch the video.

Sunday Sleeping In

Sun, 01/24/2016 - 07:00

As you read this, your humble blogger is sleeping off a long Saturday (and still owes the TW3, but did get a review of 13 Hours up. If that review is tl;dr for you, just go see it.

Most everybody in the community knows guys who went to GRS, DSS and similar operations, and this movie tells the story of what they have to be prepared to do.

Aesop was right; just go see it. But we did watch it before reviewing it, so we’re probably drummed right out of whatever regiment has such low standards as to let the movie critics in.

We hope to have some gun tech stuff up this week, in an around Hog Manor maintenance and airplane building. (Last night we actually riveted the doublers to the stub spars, so progress on the wings is on like donkey kong, and Blogbrother will be ordering the next kit (fuselage) soon.

When its time to mate the wings, tailcone, fuselagr, and empennage, the project moves from the catacombs of Hog Manor to a proper hangar, probably at Run Down Former Air Force Base. With a runway of nearly 12,000 feet, that’s practically a cross-country for the RV-12. Seems like the safest place to run the test cards on a new build. But that’s a long way and a lot of rivets ahead.

Why Gun Bans Don’t Work, Part #987616

Fri, 01/08/2016 - 05:00

We wondered why the normally busy FOSSCAD twitter feed went radio silent over the holidays. Last thing we heard about was the new Taig mill on 15 December 2015.

Well, here’s what he was up to:

Yep, that’s the first test cut on the freshly CNC’d mill.

If you want to ban guns you have to ban tools. If you want to ban tools you have to ban raw materials, and books.

Anybody who says he “supports the Second Amendment, but…” has let that abnegatory but start him on a path that ends in a pile of blazing books.

Or blazing people.

Take our guns, we still have our tools. We will make new guns and take them back.

Take our tools, we still have our books. We will make new tools.

Take our books, we still have the knowledge in our minds. How do you propose to take that?

Look Ma, No Hands!

Wed, 01/06/2016 - 17:00

Thanks to Jerry Miculek and commenter John Distai, we’ve just been introduced — netwise — to Hunter Cayll.

When I was a kid learning to shoot, a much better shooter than I was a kid named John. He had a flipper, instead of a hand, on one side but it didn’t hold him back at all. In fact, he was the best shooter of all of us. (I wonder what happened to him? He was a great guy, but we were from different towns and lost touch). But Hunter, here, has a stump — he calls it a “nub” — on his right arm, and a sort of vestigial hand with a thumb — another “nub” — on his left.

He fires pistol with his left nub, and rifle with the left one, and he shoots better than most of us.

Think your physical limitations hold you back? You might not want to whine to Hunter about that.

The 2015 End of Year Numbers

Fri, 01/01/2016 - 17:00

1,354 posts, and over 1 million words (try saying that in a Dr Evil accent). We didn’t aggregate comments. 5.1 million visits, 2.1 million unique daily visitors. And we have a positive trend:

December set an all-time per-month record of 193,334 unique visitors in the month.

For 2016? Looks like we’re gonna need a bigger chart.

And setting up the 2016 version of the spreadsheet that hosts this data is going to be unpleasant.

When Guns are Outlawed, Only Outlaws will have Vibrators

Tue, 12/29/2015 - 13:00

Yes, we know we just had a similar-sounding case on Saturday. But we swear, this is a different case of Sex Toy Violence, in this case, including a fatality but not including the Sawzall.

Stag Arms Guilty Plea and Fine — the Background

Mon, 12/28/2015 - 17:00

Recently, the Stag Arms case has been resolved with guilty pleas by the firm and its founder, forfeiture of two Federal Firearms Licenses by the manufacturer, and a ban on FLL ownership for the founder. The company continues to operate while seeking new owners, and the founder only pled to a single misdemeanor.

When Guns are Outlawed, Only Outlaws will have Machetes

Mon, 12/28/2015 - 13:00

Hey, it happens. The guy who you invited to your home tries to rob you. So you unleash your kendo skillz and give him a good slicing. Then you call the police on him. No, you continue kicking back as if nothing ever happened, till the cops show up at your door looking for the dude’s missing finger. All of which suggests that why ever he entered your home in the first place it probably was not to watch Monday Night Football.

Scatterbrained Sunday

Sun, 12/27/2015 - 08:00

Been feeling particularly scatterbrained lately, with a lot of things going on. Things get forgotten. “The center does not –” oh, wait, not our line. It’s not anything that triggers TEOTWAWKI or anything, it’s just annoying. We miss bids we intended to make to snipe stuff on GunBroker. We forget Small Dog’s schedule and wind up with an accident — not his fault, he’s just a small dog and accordingly a bit short-ranged if his humans don’t let him stretch his legs. Or we can’t find our copy of Balleisen’s Principles of Firearms, which we need for two projects. Or we get a call reminding us that the conference call we’re on has already started. “Uh, yeah, I was on another line.”

Here’s a recommendation from the Blogbrother that, after watching one episode, we’re bouncing to you: Ancient Black Ops, a British series that reaches worldwide for experts and conducts some grimly low-budget reenactments in order to get across the latest thinking on elite forces of the distant past.

When Guns are Outlawed, Only Outlaws will have Sex Toys

Sat, 12/26/2015 - 13:00

Okay, this story is seven years old, but it still comes up on a Maryland TV station’s website’s most-read list (which is how we found it). It explains a lot about the MD electorate and demonstrates the Bubba the Gunsmite approach to… er… physical pleasure.
