What shooting sports and divisions are the most relevant to real world concealed carry?

Mon, 08/04/2014 - 11:18

This weekend, as I was sitting in dangerous gun free zone eating mediocre chicken wings and drinking mexican beer, I started to idly wonder to myself which shooting sport is most relevant to real world CCW. But as I went further down that rabbit trail, I realized that an even better question is which division of which sport is most relevant to the type of guns and way people carry them right now.

What it’s like to shoot revolver at the Area 3 Championship

Mon, 08/04/2014 - 09:32

It’s like that. Complete with the dramatic music. I may have slapped this together in iMovie while under the influence of brown water and giggling like the idiot that I am.

In all seriousness though, it was a lot of fun. I really enjoyed shooting the match this year, the weather was great, I had a cool squad, and splitting that match into a two-day format instead of one day was definitely the way to go.

How to adjust a S&W revolver rear sight

Fri, 08/01/2014 - 11:58

I could have used this a few days ago at the range! S&W doesn’t put “turn this way for down” on their sights, so having a diagram is handy. Or you could use the completely idiotic mnemonic device “Clock-DAR” which stands for “clockwise down and right” because turning the adjustment screws clockwise will move your point of impact down or to the right, respectively.

BRB Area 3

Fri, 08/01/2014 - 11:38

I’m off to shoot a 400 round Area match this weekend! Area 3 has a reputation of being a pretty hardcore hosefest for Limited and Open Guns…so of course I’m bringing an 8-shot revolver! In all seriousness though, the stages look really fun, and having 8 rounds in the gun will make the match a lot more fun than if I was shooting a 625 and scoring major.

My love/hate relationship with Top Shot #tbt

Thu, 07/31/2014 - 10:23

Almost five years ago, I got an email from a friend of mine in the firearms industry. He told me about how History Channel was casting for a new TV show that was going to feature marksmen competing in various challenges to see who was the best “all-around” shooter in the country. At the time, I was an up-and-coming blogger, I’d attended the first ever industry/blogger event hosted by Crimson Trace, ParaUSA, Blackhawk, and Down Range TV at then Blackwater; I was starting to catch more freelance work from the “real” firearms media. I was also (and this is important) bored out of my mind in my daily life – I was working a decently paying but completely unfulfilling job as an insurance agent, commuting 30 minutes in traffic each day. I had become the very thing I swore I’d never be: a desk jockey with a mundane 9 to 5.

Handling guns under stress

Thu, 07/31/2014 - 08:57

One of the primary rules of firearms safety is to keep one’s finger off the trigger until they are aimed in on a target they fully intend to shoot. It sure seems simple enough, and yet unintentional discharges with firearms still happen. Sure, some of these unintentional discharges happen because the person handling the gun is an idiot, but it’s not just idiots who have experienced an unintentional loud noise when handling a firearm. I’ve mentioned before that I have collected a number of anecdotes about personal experience with unintentional discharges from names a lot of folks out there would recognize. These people are most certainly not idiots, but they are still human. Human beings are prone to lapses in attention due to fatigue and when under stress.

Today we have one quick submission, it’s the Troy Pump Action Rifle! Designed for those pesky states that hate freedom, the Troy PAR is..well…it’s a Pump-Action AR15. And that’s pretty dope.

And old friend come home: the Smith & Wesson 625

Tue, 07/29/2014 - 12:00

The first gun I ever really learned to shoot halfway decent was a Smith & Wesson 625 revolver. I used it to make Master class in IDPA, and shot a number of state level IDPA matches with it. As guns go, I really liked it…so for some reason I sold it about three years ago. I do that from time to time – I go through the guns I own and sell a bunch of them off because “I never shoot this anymore” which is usually because I’m getting paid to shoot something else, or I’ve been seized by a fit of gunderp temporarily and have decided to only shoot vintage Star BMs chambered in 9mm Largo.

This carbine is ideal for Cowboy Action Shooting, as it will hold ten rounds of .38 Sp ammunition. This handy rifle is ideal for persons of shorter stature and youth shooters that experience discomfort using heavier, lengthy standard 1873 lever-action rifles. Training Notes 07/28/14

Mon, 07/28/2014 - 20:01

Dry fire training with S&W 929 9mm, draws and reloads.

Draws pars: 2.00, 1.75, 1.50, 1.25. Beat 1.25 goal 4/5 tries. Set next goal for 1.00, star time at 1.75. All the draws were done with a trigger press at the end as well.
Reload pars: 4.00, 3.50, 3.00, 2.50. 3 seconds was about my balance point before I started getting fumbly, I can beat 2.5 but not 100% of the time. I did all the reloads with a shot at the end, so it was a reload and a clean trigger press.

Working with a new gun is difficult, but kind of fun. I really like moonclip guns, and the 929 is pretty well set up from the factory. Now that the action’s been tuned up a wee bit, I’m even more excited to shoot it. Next live fire session is Wed, I’m going to put these pars on the live fire clock and see what the difference is.
