BY DANA CRISWELL – February 12, 2014

In an announcement posted on the City of Ocean Springs, MS website the police department has offered to register firearms for the citizens of their city.  Mississippi Gun News contacted Mayor Connie Moran’s office by has not received a response to our inquiry.

Since we have not received an answer to our questions we will ask them in open forum.

1. Is there a city ordinance requiring residents of Ocean Springs, MS register firearms?
2. Who has access to this list of registered guns and owners?
3. What safeguards are in place to prevent this list from being published by a media outlet or released to a government agency?

From the city website;

Pro-Gun Bills Pass the Mississippi House of Representatives

Tue, 02/11/2014 - 16:42

BY DANA CRISWELL – February 11, 2014

———UPDATE—–Also passing today was Senate Bill 2478, a bill that would lower the cost of obtaining a concealed carry permit to $75.—–UPDATE—-

Due to the continual efforts of gun owners throughout the State, three pro-gun bills passed the Mississippi House of Representatives today.

House Bill 485

House Bill 485 prevents local municipalities from holding tax-payer funded gun buy-back programs unless firearms collected are then offers at auction to gun dealers. While this bill is not perfect and most gun owners would prefer a complete ban on buy-back programs, this bill does at the very least prevent needless destruction of the firearms.

North Mississippi Handgunner – Remington 870 for Home Defense

BY DANA CRISWELL – February 11, 2014

We spend a lot of time on Mississippi Gun News discussing laws and legislation because defending our right of self-defense and the Second Amendment is important to the survival of our nation.  But sometimes we need to get out of the house and actually shoot, it’s not only important for our proficiency, it’s also fun.

North Mississippi Handgunner produces videos that are practical, educational and fun.  Today he is shooting a Remington 870 and demonstrating the effectiveness of bird shot for home defense.

Mississippi House Bill Protects Citizens from Local Gun-Control Ordinances

Mon, 02/10/2014 - 17:40

BY DANA CRISWELL – February 10, 2014

House Bill 314 needs another push from Mississippi gun owners.  This is the bill most gun owners have anticipated and desired since House Bill 2 passed last year.  After House Bill 2 was signed by Governor Bryant and it became clear that the State Constitution recognized citizen’s right to carry a firearm, local governments began an assault on the Constitution.   Gun owners were surprised when, local mayors, city aldermen, and county supervisors showed their true colors and began passing gun-control ordinances.

Below is a video of a Kosciusko, MS official who obviously has no understand of the State Constitution or the State laws that prohibit a city from enacting gun-control laws.  Local officials like the Mayor and Board of Aldermen in Kosciusko are why we need House Bill 314.

McDaniel Monday: Is “free” now more important than “freedom”?

Mon, 02/10/2014 - 06:16

BY DANA CRISWELL – February 10, 2014

In an effort to learn more about Chris McDaniel, Mississippi Gun News is reprinting some articles written by him and originally published on MississippiPEP.com.  These articles are not all gun related, but gun owners are not the one-dimensional red-necks often depicted in the media.  Gun owners understand the importance of freedom and liberty.  After all, that’s usually why we believe gun ownership and the Second Amendment is so important.

Recently it was reported on Breitbart.com  that Henry Barbour, a lobbyist and adviser to the Republican establishment group Mississippi Conservatives, said  Cochran is “vulnerable” in what will be a low-turnout primary in an anti-Washington and anti-establishment environment.  Mississippi gun owners need to make our voice heard by making this a high-turnout primary.  If we do, we can show Washington that we are taking our State and our Country back.

Also, if G

Why is a Libertarian Supporting more Gun Laws?

Sun, 02/09/2014 - 09:59

BY DANA CRISWELL – February 9, 2014

Since January there has been blur of new laws proposed, discussed, voted on and voted down.  Mississippi made national news when Legislators proposed laws that would require ammo registration and the collection of social security numbers of those purchasing ammo.  We saw a total of 30 gun related laws proposed and now 7 of those proposals have survived and are headed to the House or Senate for votes.

I consider the 7 remaining bills “pro-gun” and support them and hope they are passed into law, but there is a libertarian inside my head that is beginning to make a lot of noise.  The truth is passing more and more laws makes me uncomfortable.  The number of proposed laws in the Mississippi Legislature is mind-boggling and I simply do not believe that our State needs a continually expanding government.

What about more gun laws?

When we look at guns and our rights to possess, carry, or use for defense, it’s really quite simple.  The Second Amendment of the U.S. Constitution acknowledges our “right

Good News for Mississippi Concealed Carry Firearms Instructors

Sat, 02/08/2014 - 17:07

BY RICK WARD – February 8, 2014

When House Bill 506 was codified into law effective July 1, 2011, the Department of Public Safety (DPS) was given broad powers regarding certifying instructors for the new so-called Enhanced Carry Law. At first they really didn’t know how to handle their new responsibilities and rumors surfaced that classes would be taught by law enforcement personnel only, training would consist of at least one week of instruction and so on. Attorneys, National Rifle Association (NRA) representatives, Academy Staff and local instructors met with DPS to tone down the requirements.

The results were outlined in a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between DPS and instructors whose qualifications were accepted by DPS as qualified to teach the course. No emphasis was placed on a single certifying civilian agency. NRA was the giant among giants in the industry but in the mind of DPS, they were not the only game in town. DPS would accept certification from NRA, Glock, Military, 4H, Smith and Wesson, Sig Sauer and any other nationally accepted organization qualified to certify instructors. DPS expected instructors to follow the nat

Mississippi Bill Says No More Gun Buy-Back Programs

Thu, 02/06/2014 - 08:25

BY DANA CRISWELL – February 6, 2014

I’ve got a good friend who lives in Houston, Texas.  Years ago I remember talking to him about the City of Houston having a “gun buy-back” program.  He explained that they would pay $100 for any gun in any condition.  So he went to a pawn shop, bought a cheap rusted handgun then drove straight to the police station and “sold back” that gun.  He then took his profit and used that to buy the gun he wanted.

Anyone who has an ounce of brains in their head knows that “gun buy-back” programs are a waste of time and money.  No one is safer, the number of guns “on the street” are not reduced, and nothing, NOTHING, is accomplished except some gun hating politicians get a photo-op in front of a pile of guns.  It’s time Mississippians tell our local governments we are tired of them wasting our money on useless programs.  Our tax dollars are not to be used for photo-ops or liberal “feel-good” schemes.

Mississippi’s Ammo Registration Bill – Officially Dead

BY DANA CRISWELL – February 5, 2014

Yesterday saw the death of several bills in the Mississippi Legislature.  Among the dead is the Ammo Registration Bill by Omeria Scott, HB-179 which would have destroyed Mississippi’s Castle Doctrine and SB-2031 that would have required all ammo sold in Mississippi bear a unique marking or serial number.

The attempts to limit our freedoms, gather social security numbers and other personal information on gun owners have been successfully rejected by the people of Mississippi.  Since the Legislature began its session in January, citizens have sent thousands of emails to their representatives and motivated Governor Bryant and Speaker Gunn to issue statements confirming their commitment to protecting Second Amendment rights.

Without the tireless work of organizations like Mississippi Carry,

Mississippi Bill Prevents Gun Confiscation During Martial Law

Tue, 02/04/2014 - 07:19

BY DANA CRISWELL – February 4, 2014

We all remember Hurricane Katrina and who of us can forget the YouTube videos  showing police in New Orleans disarming citizens.

“No one will be armed, we are taking all weapons.” said New Orleans Police Chief in a press conference.

That statement is burned into the minds of gun owners everywhere.  We have nightmares consisting of that very scenario and never believed it could happen in the United States of America.  We have a Constitution, the Second Amendment, How could that happen?

In 2006 President George W. Bush signed an executive order called the Disaster Recovery Personal Protection Act  that strengthened individual gun rights during a national emergency.

Cam Edwards, of NRA News discussed this action on TheBlaze TV,  “What that bill did

Protect Mississippi Against Obama’s Anti-Second Amendment Executive Orders

Mon, 02/03/2014 - 09:33

BY DANA CRISWELL – February 3, 2014

In President Obama’s State of the Union address he pledged to act against the Second Amendment, “with or without Congress”, ignoring the fact that the Constitution does not give him the power to act without the consent of the American people. Our Congress, including Mississippi’s current Senator’s Cochran and Wicker, have proven they are unwilling to stop these unlawful acts by the President.

Obama said in his State of the Union address,

“Citizenship means standing up for the lives that gun violence steals from us each day,  I have seen the courage of parents, students, pastors, and police officers all over this country who say ‘we are not afraid,’ and I intend to keep trying, with or without Congress, to help stop more tragedies from visiting innocent Americans in our movie theaters, shopping malls, or schools like Sandy Hook.”

Our Constitution is under attack and we m
