The Truth About Guns

Grand Jury Indicts [Alleged] New York City Subway Shooter Frank James
From the AP . . .
A federal grand jury has indicted a man suspected of shooting up a New York City subway train last month — an attack that wounded 10 people and rattled a city already experiencing a rise in violent crime.
The panel charged Frank James, 62, on Friday with committing a terrorist attack or other violence against a mass transportation system and discharging a firearm during a violent crime.
It’s Easier to Blame ‘Ghost Guns’ in New York City Than to Put and Keep Criminals Behind Bars
Ghost guns are the bugbear of the moment, because only a lunatic would defend them. And because it is much easier, and far less controversial, to blame them for New York’s blood-spattered sidewalks than it would be to bring the full force of the law down on the core problem — the trigger-pullers.
There is no hoarier cliché in the American conversation than “guns don’t kill, people do.” But its depressing ubiquity doesn’t make it any less true.
Dave Chappelle’s Attacker: I’m Not Guilty!
From the AP . . .
A man charged in an attack on comedian Dave Chappelle during a performance at the Hollywood Bowl pleaded not guilty Friday to four misdemeanors.
Isaiah Lee, 23, entered the not guilty pleas in a Los Angeles courtroom to charges of battery, possessing a deadly weapon with intent to assault unlawfully crossing from a spectator area onto a stage at a theatrical event and interfering with or delaying such an event with unlawful conduct.

SIG SAUER ‘Soft Launches’ the New P320 XTEN 10mm Pistol
Yesterday was day one of SIG SAUER’s inaugural SIG Freedom Days event at the massive Ben Avery Shooting Sports Center north of Phoenix. SIG’s invited the public to pay one price and try out a lot of their most popular handguns (favorites like the P220 legion, the M18 and M18, P320 Spectre Comp, P365X and the new P322 and more). Long guns are well represented, too (MCX, Cross, MPX Copperhead, among others).
Discreetly tucked into the far end of the pistol range, way down by the new XM5 and XM250 next gen squad weapons, is a brand new pistol that hasn’t been announced yet.

Sorry, Civilian Disarmament Advocates, but Guns Aren’t Going Away in America. Ever
There’s no reason that guns will become less important (in American culture) than they’ve been historically because the same things that motivated gun ownership, again, from the seventeenth century all the way until today, are likely to remain in place. Which is, again, social uncertainty, social unrest, and the problems guns help people to solve.

Firearm Industry Passes $15 Billion in Pittman-Robertson Tax Contributions for Conservation
From the National Shooting Sports Foundation . . .
NSSF, the firearm industry trade association, marked a milestone achievement when firearm and ammunition manufacturers topped $15 billion in contributions to the Wildlife Restoration Trust Fund since its inception in 1937.
“This is an achievement for which all in the firearm and ammunition industry are proud,” said Joe Bartozzi, NSSF’s President and CEO. “This historic milestone is indicative of the value this industry places on the conservation of wildlife and the habitats in which they thrive.
Obscure Object of Desire: The FN Model 1922
I’ve become more and more of a fan of old guns. I cursed myself today when I was outbid on an Ithaca 37 Police, and it’s now going for higher than I’m willing to pay. What wasn’t selling for higher than my willingness to pay was an FN Model 1922. I think what attracts me to older guns is that I don’t know much about them, what makes them tick, or their particular intricacies.
If you showed me the latest wonder pistol from any big manufacturer, I’m likely to see a striker-fired, polymer frame, double-stack 9mm.

The Gunshine State, Indeed: Florida Tops 2.5 Million Concealed Carry Permits
According to the latest reports from the lovely, sunny state of Florida, the number of active concealed weapon permits has just exceeded 2.5 million for the first time. That’s over 20 percent of the Sunshine State’s adult (18 y/o+) population.
All this despite Commissioner Nicole “Nikki” Fried doing just about everything she can to slow walk and deny permits where possible. Between the high number of active CCWs — the most of any state in the country — and the large number of firearm manufacturers, perhaps this is why we like to call Florida not the Sunshine State but the Gunshine State.

Seattle Police Apprehend a Burglar After He Accidentally Shot Himself in the Head
Catching bad guys is much easier when they don’t use basic safe gun handling practices. You know, basics like good trigger discipline never muzzling yourself. It was a conspicuous lack of that kind of care and attention that allowed the over-worked Seattle police to get another criminal off the streets quickly after he tried to burglarize a garage yesterday.
A homeowner heard a noise in his garage and, as the Seattle PD describes what happened, he went to investigate .
Gun Tweet of the Day: Your Gun Rights Are Just as Precarious As Abortion Rights
He is, of course, correct (about the term). Nothing in the Constitution dictates that everyone can have a handgun without permits, etc. That’s a policy preference. It would be just as accurate (if not more so, for the moment) to open a clinic offering “Constitutional Abortions” https://t.co/BTRjl5Gi98

A Beginner’s Guide to Muzzle Brakes
A question I am often asked is if a person should get a muzzle brake for their rifle. There is some ground to cover in answering that question, so let’s start with some definitions.
The Different Muzzle Devices
In today’s shooting world there are many guns that come with threaded muzzles that can accept a variety of different attachments. The most common three today are muzzle brakes, flash hiders, and suppressors.

Californians Are Running Out of Handguns the State Will Allow Them to Purchase (Legally)
California is pulling off a vanishing act right before everyone’s eyes. The list of semi-automatic handguns available for sale there is rapidly dwindling, thanks to the state’s “Not Unsafe Handgun Roster.”
It won’t be too long before all semi-automatic handguns will be banned from sale in California – a step closer to gun control’s ultimate goal of banning lawful civilian firearm ownership. The California “Not Unsafe Handgun” law, enacted in 2001, started a slow motion statewide handgun ban.
Avis: Sorry, Ma’am, the Gun You Found in Your Glove Compartment Is Not Our Problem
[Marianna Macleod] said she was stunned when she found a gun in the glove compartment of her Avis rental car on Sunday.
She wanted to get the firearm out of her possession, so she immediately called Avis.
“I opened my glove compartment to look for something and discovered a gun in my car. I wasn’t expecting that at all, so I freaked out and called Avis,” she said.
LESSONS LEARNED: A Tale of Two Home Invasions
At a recent Guns Save Life meeting, a retired Illinois State Trooper talked about a couple of home invasion cases with very different outcomes. He shared publicly-available information, offering important lessons gun owners can take from the facts of the cases.
First, he talked about a shots-fired home invasion in the town of Streator on the day after Christmas last year.
In that case, Austin Adamchak, 23, forced entry on the home of his ex-girlfriend intent on beating her new boyfriend.

President Biden, Allow Us to Introduce You to Vice President Biden
President Joe Biden has spent an extraordinary amount of speech time decrying the firearm industry’s existence. He’s repeated the same lies over and over. He’s called more than 375,000 Americans that work for lawful firearm and ammunition businesses “the enemy.”
No one could blame the president’s chief speechwriter for announcing he’s jumping ship and leaving The White House.
Today was my last day at the White House.

Coordination: The Anti-Gun Left Goes After Permitless Open Carry
What a weekend I have had from right wing trolls. Why? Because I correctly stated there is no such thing as Constitutional Carry. It is a made-up marketing term designed to avoid saying permitless open carry. Seems that they do not want me to share that truth. I wonder why?
— Fred Guttenberg (@fred_guttenberg) May 2, 2022
Gun violence rises as easy access to guns rises. Many mayors and city councils in big cities seek to put severe restrictions on guns — banning assault weapons, limiting handguns, banning open carry, requiring testing, licensing and registration.
