GRIP Act
U.S. Senator Thad Cochran (R-Miss.) today introduced legislation that would prohibit any federal funding from being used to support a gun registry maintained by any other organization, including state and local governments.
The Gun-owner Registration Information Protection Act, or GRIP Act, would clarify existing law that bars the federal government from storing information acquired during the firearms background check process.
The GRIP Act would extend that prohibition to prevent any federal funding from being used to contribute to nonfederal gun registries. The Cochran measure has attracted 12 original cosponsors and has been endorsed by the National Rifle Association.
“The federal government should not play any role in misguided gun control initiatives that involve the storage or public distribution of personal information of law-abiding people who own or purchase firearms legally,” Cochran said.
“There is nothing in law today that says federal resources can’t be used, either intentionally or otherwise by a state or local government, to collect and store personally identifiable information related to legal firearm purchases and ownership. This legislation would close that loophole,” he said.

Greeted by a handful of audible boos and jeers, Rick Perry was able to win over the audience when he took the stage during Jimmy Kimmel’s visit to Austin on Tuesday night. As part of a Kimmel’s week-long set of shows in association with South by Southwest, the longest-serving Texas governor chatted with the late-night host about his stance on marijuana legalization, his concealed-carry permit, and his future plans.
Perry attributed the Austin crowd’s initial harsh reception to the city’s unique character, one that differs from most of the rest of the state; he described Austin as “the blueberry in the tomato soup” that is the state of Texas. He managed to fall into the audience’s good graces later on by touting his support of minimizing penalties for minor drug offenses, his love for Willie Nelson, and recounting the time he jammed with ZZ Top on the drums in concert.

Brady Law Has Done Little To Keep Guns Out Of Criminals’ Hands
Last Friday marked the 20th anniversary of the so-called Brady Law, a federal gun control in honor of James Brady, Ronald Reagan’s former press secretary who was wounded in John Hinckley’s assassination attempt.
Since it requires background checks on all guns purchased from federally licensed firearms dealers, gun control advocates celebrated the law’s purported effectiveness.
The description by the Capitol newspaper The Hill was typical: “The Brady Handgun Violence Prevention Act, which took effect 20 years ago Friday, has blocked more than 2 million firearm sales, preventing ‘countless’ killings and other crimes, gun control advocates said at an event to mark the anniversary … .”
On Friday, the Brady Campaign claimed that half those blocked from purchasing a gun — over 1 million — were felons.
Impressive numbers. But, alas, both are gross exaggerations.
In reality, the “Brady Checks” are quite ineffective in stopping criminals from getting guns. There are actually very few hard-core criminals that are stupid enough to even try to buy a gun from a dealer that does a background check.
The media don’t understand what they are reporting. Getting denied by a Brady check is not the same thing as saying that the person i
