[Podcast] Palmer vs. DC

Tue, 07/29/2014 - 00:58

The Palmer vs. DC case has been the giant news piece from the past week, and the decision only came out on Saturday. Ben and I dive deep into the decision and talk about what lead up to it, what it all means (We’re not lawyers though…) and where we think the decision will take us in the future. As mentioned in the episode, you should follow @EmilyMiller on twitter, and Alan Gura’s blog where he’s posting updates as well.

Will the Pennsylvania CCW Doctor Keep His Job?

Sun, 07/27/2014 - 09:06

I would expect that if the doctor we’re going to immediately lose his job the hospital would be praising his actions on their Facebook page. Bravo.

Palmer vs. D.C. Decision = Constitutional Carry?

Sat, 07/26/2014 - 22:39

Here’s the deal: I failed Constitutional law the first time around in college and had to take it again, so take everything in this post as my opinion, and don’t drive up to DC and start carrying concealed tomorrow based on my opinion.

Holy Smokes! Washington DC CCW Ban Overturned!

Sat, 07/26/2014 - 17:14

This. Is. Amazing.

From the federal circuit court judge ruling on Palmer vs. DC:

In light of Heller, McDonald, and their progeny, there is no longer any basis on which this Court can conclude that the District of Columbia’s total ban on the public carrying of ready-to-use handguns outside the home is constitutional under any level of scrutiny. Therefore, the Court finds that the District of Columbia’s complete ban on the carrying of handguns in public is unconstitutional…

BREAKING: Remington to Replace All R51 Pistols

Fri, 07/25/2014 - 16:09

Reports are coming out this afternoon that Remington will not be killing the R51 like many others have reported, but instead will be retooling, and replacing all of the problem pistols.

Interestingly, this comes after big green announced they are closing their Pineville, NC Para plant where the R51 was being manufactured. I suspect these new R51s will be manufactured at the new Remington super facility in Alabama, hopefully with much better quality control.

Unfortunately, I think the damage has been done. I was pretty excited about the R51 before I got my paws on one, but after shooting it, I wouldn’t be interested trying one out again…

Armed Doc Shoots Deranged Madman With Concealed Handgun

Fri, 07/25/2014 - 08:58

It was not clear why Silverman, a doctor for nearly 25 years, was armed at the office. Bernice Ho, a spokeswoman for Mercy Fitzgerald, said Thursday it was against hospital policy for anyone other than security guards to carry weapons.

I think we know why he was carrying.

When I was quite young I remember my dad telling me that there’s a difference between being right, and being dead right, meaning that sometimes you have to do what you have to do to stay alive. For this Doc in Pennsylvania, that paid off.

Carry on Doc.

Shooting Range Shenanigans

Mon, 07/21/2014 - 00:09

Ben and I discuss several funny things that have happened on the shooting range over the years.

  • A Glock that went full auto after a “trigger job”
  • A 1911 Recoil Spring Plug that got shot into a creek
  • A Pearce magazine extension flying off and nearly breaking my face
  • Rounds detonating in a fire
  • Shooting an AR-15 with a giant compensator through a barrel
  • A .45 ACP bullet stopping halfway through a cardboard target

We also cover a bunch of news, and all the other podcast stuff we usually do. You’ll like it.

:shakes head: Daniel Defense Offering Financing for Rifles

Fri, 07/18/2014 - 11:09

TTAG is reporting that Daniel Defense is set to introduce financing on their rifles.

I like Daniel Defense. I like their rifles, and I like their politics. I have to say though, I don’t like this.

I’ve done a lot of stupid things with money in my time, but I’ve never even thought of financing a rifle (I did finance a mountain bike once though…). If you are even considering doing this, do me a favor and buy this first.

Much like shooting, managing your finances requires a large amount of responsibility. Please don’t go into debt for a rifle. If you can’t pay for it, you can’t afford it.

Ben has been busting his tail with his shooting, and with video editing over the past couple months. Below is his latest USPSA match video where he spent much of the match working on shooting while moving.

Gun Rights Are Civil Rights

Wed, 07/16/2014 - 08:34

NPR has an interesting interview up with Charles Cobb, the author of “This Nonviolent Stuff’ll Get You Killed”. In the interview he talks about the role that guns played in the south during the Civil rights movement. The interview is just over 12 minutes in length, and offers several anecdotes about guns being used to protect people in the non-violent movement during the fight for civil rights.

Removing Glock Magazine Baseplates

Tue, 07/15/2014 - 09:00

From time to time I hear someone complain about how hard it is to remove Glock magazine baseplates. Several places sell special tools for this, and it’s all unnecessary. All you need is a 1/8″ punch to stick in the bottom of the magazine, and then you can just pop the baseplate right off.
