Black Rain Ordinance Releases NY Compliant AR-15, Anti-Gunners Panties Twist

Sat, 04/05/2014 - 12:57

Black Rain Ordinance has released NY compliant AR-15, removing all of the evil features that make the rifle illegal in the state under the NY unSAFE act. This has the anti gun folks up there in a pretty tricky situation, since they got what they wanted in the law, but all the sudden that isn’t good enough.

Newsmax is reporting that Leah Gunn Barrett (yes, that is actually her real name… seriously) who is the Executive Director of New Yorkers Against Gun Violence is quoted saying the new guns “follow the letter of the law but not the spirit, and we’re keeping the governor’s office and the state police on their toes and monitoring this.”

Yes, that old “spirit of the law” argument. You know, laws so poorly written that just complying with them isn’t good enough…

BREAKING: Otis McDonald Passes

Fri, 04/04/2014 - 17:45

Otis McDonald, the man who fought the Chicago handgun ban all the way to the Supreme Court, and won, passed away today.

We’ll forever remember the McDonald ruling, but don’t forget that there was a man behind it that got the ball rolling.

Just a heads up, my Mossberg 930 is up for sale at Carolina Gunrunners in North Raleigh.

Tinfoil Hat: US Gov Creates Social Network to Stir Unrest in Cuba

Thu, 04/03/2014 - 22:51

I generally try not to stray too far from guns and gear and stuff like that here at Triangle Tactical, but sometimes there’s a story that I can’t let slip by without mentioning:

The Washington Post is reporting that the US Government created a Twitter like social network in Cuba in order to stir unrest, and possibly overthrow Castro.

I don’t like Castro. I don’t like communism, and I don’t like that the Cuban people are living under a dictator who is keeping them in their current situation.

With that being said, after all of the things that have come out over the past year or so regarding domestic spying here in the US, I’m more than a little concerned that the .gov may be involved in something like this domestically. I guess in the US they wouldn’t have to make their own social network though, since it seems like Facebook, Twitter, and Google are pretty willing to share whatever goes on with the .gov.

It’s not just

A Look Into the .22lr Shortage

Wed, 04/02/2014 - 13:32

Ben and I mentioned this in the podcast earlier this week, but I thought I would share it for those of you who don’t listen :

As you surely know, California Senator Leland Yee was arrested last week on allegations of gun running. In the 137 page affidavit, one quote jumped out as interesting to both Ben and I on page 67:

Someone who is (allegedly) an international gun runner was only able to get their hands on 8rds of .22lr.

Tough times…

Looking Down on Those who Don’t Shoot Much

Tue, 04/01/2014 - 18:27

I found myself reading a Reddit /r/CCW thread this afternoon that brought up a great question regarding concealed carry for those who don’t have the budget to shoot and train a lot. The thread creator was asking about living paycheck to paycheck as it relates to concealed carry, and specifically this question:

2: do you experienced gun enthusiasts look down on people who carry in my current situation? Would you see me as a liability or an asset? On the outside looking in I can see how someone would criticize me for not having enough trigger time, I completely understand that.

I’ve witnessed this on multiple occasions over the years of being involved with different online communities. There’s a small strain of folks who take firearms training classes as a hobby, who are very vocal about getting training with [Insert former Seal Team Delta Ranger X]. Most of these instructors are well respected shooters who have a lot of accomplishments, but the problem is that classes are expensive and when you factor in time off work, ammo, travel expenses, tuition fees, etc, training is out of the realm of financial possibility for many self defense minded people.

CHP Holder Shoots Hostage Taker

Tue, 04/01/2014 - 17:20

A man entered a Dollar General store and began waving a gun around, and eventually attempted to usher his hostages into the breakroom of the store.

I’ve been told that once a person begins to move hostages into a different location, people die. During a simple robbery, the robber usually wants to get out of the scene pretty quickly in order to get away, and the situation doesn’t involve rounding people up at gunpoint.

It just so happened that there was a person in the store with a legally concealed weapon who didn’t like the idea of being rounded up and taken to a different location by an armed madman. The CHP holder fired a single shot, killing the madman, and ending the incident.

Bravo sir! This is why we carry whenever we’re out and about, even during a quick trip to the convience store. We don’t know when the excrement is going to hit the fan, but being prepared for the situation puts the armed citizen at the advantage.

Breaking the Rules – 75

Mon, 03/31/2014 - 00:30

This is episode 75 of the podcast! It’s quite late, and I just finished editing the show. Full shownotes will be up as soon as I get time to write them, but I want to go to bed! I’ll be updating them throughout the day Monday…

This week we talk about the 4 rules of gun HANDLING, and when we break those rules.

We also get into the California Senator Yee situation with his arrest for gun running, a Washington DC man arrested for muzzle loader bullets (literally pieces of lead and copper), and the Detroit concealed carrier who stops a man from attacking a store clerk with a needle.

Plugs of the Week:

Episode 366 of Black Man with a Gun is pretty great. Kenn Blanchard reads an excerpt from David Kopels book “The Truth About Gun Control”. You’ll like it.

The Gun Show Podcast guys are back online after a pipe burst above their studio and ruined their equipment. Their new equipment is apparently up and running, and they sound really good.

Another one from the “Play Stupid Games, Win Stupid Prizes” File…

Sat, 03/29/2014 - 17:30

It might be staged, but another lesson in what not to do. I’ve said it before: this sort of situation scares the crap out of me. I don’t want to shoot a dumb kid who isn’t looking to actually harm me.

Concealed Carry Classes Aren’t Training, and that’s Okay

Wed, 03/26/2014 - 16:06

There was a recent discussion online where someone mentioned that after completing their state mandated concealed carry class, they still felt undertrained to carry.

The fact is that concealed carry classes are meant to ensure that applicants leave the class with a minimum amount of gun safety, use of force law, and gun handling skills. That’s it, and that’s okay.

Let’s face it, here in NC you can be a downright awful shooter and still pass the shooting portion of the class. All you have to do is hit the torso sized target, it’s not hard, and that’s okay.

I’m of the opinion that if someone can be trusted to own a pistol, they can be trusted to carry it. In a perfect world, every state would have constitutional carry, but in the states that don’t, I’m perfectly okay with the minimum requirements for obtaining a permit.

Getting training above and beyond what is required in the concealed carry class is the responsibility of the permit holder. Some people seek additional training with an instructor, others seek a community of like minded folks, and yet others practice and train thr

Gun Classifieds are Hilarious

Wed, 03/26/2014 - 08:54

Browsing gun classified sights can be hilarious. Sometimes you’ll see the most tacticool rifles with 15lbs of gear bolted onto them, and other times you get a gem like this one. Maybe it isn’t all that funny, but I burst out laughing when I saw it last night, maybe because I wouldn’t give $200 for a Hi-Point either…

CCW Confessions: I’ve Been Made Twice

Wed, 03/26/2014 - 05:03

In about 4 years of carrying concealed daily, I’ve been made twice:

  • If I’m carrying behind the hip I generally try to avoid bending over or squatting down in public as much as possible, but sometimes it can’t be avoided. I was carrying my Glock 19 in an IWB holster behind my hip. It was a hot Carolina summer afternoon, and I had to run to the store to get dog food. For the longest time, the only food my dog would eat was Ol’Roy from Wal-Mart, and it was sold in 50lb bags. Picking one up off of the bottom shelf requires some bending. I squatted down and picked up the bag when I felt my cover garment ride up a bit, just as a guy walked behind me. I placed the bag in the cart, then pulled my shirt back down when I noticed the guy was still standing near me. I looked in his direction and with a grin he said “Forty?”, and I replied “Nine”. He smiled and walked away.
  • The second time I was made was when I was trying out a very nice Galco shoulder rig. I’d always been told that they were awful so I bought one to try out. I’d been using it under a winter jacket for a few weeks without issue. I actually liked carrying with the shoulder rig while driving, and everything was going well. One thing to note here is that the holster, straps, and mag

Review Revisited: G-Code INCOG with Mag Caddy

Tue, 03/25/2014 - 06:15

Last year I posted my thoughts on the excellent G-Code INCOG holster for my Springfield XDs 9mm. When I reviewed the holster initially I didn’t have the on board mag caddy, and I feel that the holster+mag caddy deserves it’s own review because it’s different with the attached mag caddy.

Full Disclosure: The folks at G-Code generously provided me with the mag caddy for this review.

Before the INCOG mag caddy arrived I’d never held one in my hands, and other than looking at some pictures online I wasn’t very familiar it. The mag caddy arrived with some longer fasteners to attach it to the holster, and it attaches using the same holes that one of the holster clips attaches to. I was concerned how adding the extra size and bulk to the holster would carry,

The Journey of a Thousand Miles

Mon, 03/24/2014 - 23:03

After this week’s episode of the podcast about how we got started in competitive shooting and the path we’ve taken to where we are today, I’ve been thinking about my own experience and the best way I can describe it is like gathering momentum.

Something becomes the norm: shooting one match a month. And then you push a little beyond that, and shoot two matches a month for a while until that becomes normal. And then three, and sometimes four. And then that’s the norm.

Six months ago I started dry firing daily, and now it’s just normal. So the idea of dry firing in the morning before work and then my regular evening session seems like a reasonable incremental change. In the abstract, the idea of dry firing twice every day seems like the conduct of someone much more devoted than myself, but in the concrete, it seems like a small change to make for a performance boost.

You don’t wake up and decide to do these things all of a sudden. They sneak up on you and add up over time.

Caswell Ranch Cancels all Monthly Matches

Mon, 03/24/2014 - 22:56

A post just came across my Facebook feed from Dean at Caswell Ranch. He is cancelling all monthly matches in order to keep the range open for members on the weekends.

(function(d, s, id) { var js, fjs = d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0]; if (d.getElementById(id)) return; js = d.createElement(s); js.id = id; js.src = "//connect.facebook.net/en_US/all.js#xfbml=1"; fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js, fjs); }(document, 'script', 'facebook-jssdk'));

Post by Caswell Ranch Pistol & Rifle Range.

I’ve already removed all of the matches from the calendar. I’m sorry to see a range cease holding competitions, but I understand that any business needs to adjust to the wants and needs of their customer base.

Origins and Turning Points – 74

Mon, 03/24/2014 - 00:57

Ben and I talk about how we got started in competitive shooting. Neither of us are lifelong competitors, and we talk about how we got started, and the things that kept us wanting to improve our shooting. Neither of us are lifelong competitive shooters, and we both got started different ways.

The News:

Sen. Diane Feinstein has written an ‘open letter’ to President Obama asking him to ban the import of semi-automatic rifles, and “assault pistols” citing the 1968 Gun Control Act.

Last week we talked about the Winston-Salem, NC gun buyback, and how they issued IOU’s for the guns after they ran out of money. Looks like the city had to make some budget changes in order to pay for the guns they took in, and it should be noted that they will not be offering IOUs at the April gun buyback. Also, look at the stock photo used on the linked news website, they only took in 2 “assault weapons” at the event last weekend, so that picture is obviously from a different location… hmmm…

Saturday Night Hustle

Sun, 03/23/2014 - 00:50

The wife and I are night owls on the weekends. Saturday nights for us generally entail going out somewhat late at night and gassing up the cars for the week, grocery shopping, and whatever else we decide to go do.

Before I get into tonight’s story, let me say that I know the old addage “nothing good happens after midnight”, but I tend not to abide by it very often.

Tonight we set out late to basically go for a drive after a long day of getting things done around the house, and we ended up grabbing some cash, and then heading to the gas station to fill up the car. We’ve been doing the Dave Ramsey budget to pay off some debt, so we pay cash for most things these days. I pulled the car up to the gas pump, and then went inside to pre-pay for the gas. As I was walking out, I noticed a white car had pulled into a spot near the corner of the gas station, and a male subject from the car was heading toward the doors.

I gave a cursory look around the parking lot to make sure I didn’t get run over as I walked back to the car, and as soon as I stepped out from the row of parked cars, a woman approached me from the direction of the white car.

You know the type, pretty typical tweaker who looks like she hasn’t slept for a week.
