The Truth About Guns

Cooke: The Fifth Circuit Stopped an Unconstitutional Power Grab by the ATF
As anyone who has considered this issue for more than ten minutes will ineluctably comprehend, the entire purpose of writing laws down is to guarantee that, until those laws are changed by legislators, they remain in effect regardless of the transient passions of the mob. The law is the law, and it means what it means, even if there is “tremendous” public pressure to make it mean something else. If we want a government that is able to invent law on the fly in response to tragic events, we can abandon the Constitution and refashion the U.S.
Moms Demand Action Founder Shannon Watts Announces She’s Retiring
Shannon Watts, the PR executive who disingenuously presented herself as just another midwestern mom who was OUTRAGED by gun violence, founded the infelicitously named Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America after the Sandy Hook shooting. She spun up the anti-gun rights advocacy org, thanks to endless tongue baths plenty of favorable coverage from the like-minded media.
The Hoplophobic Harridan in Chief then sold Moms Demand Action off in 2013 to gun control impresario Michael Bloomberg for an undisclosed amount.
Gun Control Factions Fight Over Versions of Illinois’ Gun, Magazine Ban Bill as the Clock Runs Down
In the deep blue Land of Lincoln, a majority of legislators blindly support imposing more gun control on the little people. As if generations of gun control in Chicago had magically transformed it into it a tranquil utopia (with “only” 736 homicides in 2022). Now, the most radical advocates of victim disarmament have threatened to withhold their support from the latest gun control package that was supposed to have all the votes needed for passage.

Patrice: If You Want a Gun, You Should Have to Join the National Guard
Federal firearms law pre-empting state law based on an amendment authored for the explicit purpose of shielding states from federal regulation in this area is truly wild. Yet, it’s just the level of spit and scotch tape argumentation that the Supreme Court eats up these days.
Which is all to say that these New York regulations are almost certainly doomed.
What would round three of NY gun regulations look like if the Supreme Court unceremoniously trashes these?
Famous Gun Nicknames – How Many of These Did You Know?
By Joe Engesser
Sometimes a gun’s nickname is a term of endearment. Other times they stem from fear or detraction. Slang gun names can be derived from a weapon’s appearance, its sound when it fires, a defining attribute, its impact on the battlefield, or sometimes as a clever play on the firearm’s official designation. However they originated, the most memorable gun nicknames include an element of truth and help cement a weapon’s legacy.

Good Rule of Thumb: Don’t Mess With Texans Eating Tacos [VIDEO]
An armed masked man stormed into a Houston tanqueria late Thursday evening and demanded money and valuables from the shop and its customers. While the robber walked around the joint, waiving a pistol and greedily grabbing up loot, one customer accessed his handy-dandy personal safety tool.
When the thief walked by again, the man shot the criminal. Repeatedly. Including five times while the suspect was down on the ground motionless. He was later pronounced dead right there.
Shniderman: Firearm Owner Insurance Mandates Are Likely Doomed Under Bruen
The U.S. Supreme Court’s decision in New York Pistol and Rifle Association, Inc. v. Bruen brings a sea change in the way courts evaluate gun restrictions. Eleven of thirteen circuits have engaged in a two-step analysis to determine the constitutionality of these laws. Employing an originalist framework, the Supreme Court instructed lower courts to engage only in the first step—historical analysis.
Because many regulations cannot be traced directly to the founding, this test will require lower courts to analogize.
Opinion Polls Be Damned: Second Amendment Rights Are Not Subject to Popularity Contests
From the CCRKBA . . .
The Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms blasted recent public opinion polls showing support for bans on so-called “semiautomatic weapons,” noting that constitutionally-protected rights are not subject to what amount to popularity contests.
“Fundamental rights, including the right to keep and bear arms, must never be determined by the whims of survey respondents,” said CCRKBA Chairman Alan Gottlieb. “We don’t have popularity contests to determine the rights of free speech or the press.
Illinois Anti-Bruen Gun & Magazine Ban Bill Passed the House, Expected to Clear the Senate Before Wednesday
Ignoring the rule of law and the Supreme Court decision in Bruen, the gun control contingent in Springfield is hellbent on passing a gun and magazine ban before the lame duck session ends Wednesday at noon. Legislators in the House passed SB-2226 in the dead of night. However, due to some parliamentary moves, that bill may not get called for a vote in the Senate.
To remedy that, Illinois’ gun control jihadis, led by rotund Governor J.B.
5th Circuit: The Statutory Definition of ‘Machinegun’ Does Not Apply to Bump Stocks
Since the National Firearms Act of 1934, federal law has heavily regulated machineguns. Indeed, as proposed, that law was known to many as “the Anti-Machine Gun Bill.” The possession or transfer of a machinegun was eventually banned through the Gun Control Act of 1968 and the Firearms Owners’ Protection Act of 1986 [with some guns grandfathered in -EV]. Today, possession of a machinegun is a federal crime, carrying a penalty of up to ten years’ incarceration.
5th Circuit Court of Appeals Strikes Down Trump Bump Stock Ban
By Kevin McGill, AP
A Trump administration ban on bump stocks — devices that enable a shooter to rapidly fire multiple rounds from semi-automatic weapons after an initial trigger pull — was struck down Friday by a federal appeals court in New Orleans.
The ban was instituted after a gunman perched in a high-rise hotel using bump stock-equipped weapons massacred dozens of people in Las Vegas in 2017. Gun rights advocates have challenged it in multiple courts.

Safety Basics: Reholster Your Gun Slowly and Deliberately
Something that doesn’t get enough attention among pistol carriers is how and when to reholster your handgun. The draw stroke gets a lot of attention but lots of people who carry a handgun spend little or no time thinking about how to safely reholster.
As many have demonsrated, doing it safely is important because a misstep could send you to the hospital — or worse — if a piece of clothing or a droopy sweat guard snags your trigger.

After Being Stabbed in Face, 79-Year-Old Man Shoots 22-Year-Old Attacker Dead in Small Wisconsin Town
Some people think that violent crime almost never happens in small towns. While we read more about what happens in places like Philadelphia, Portland, Chicago and their endless parade of violent crime, bad things happen in small town America, too.
