Doing Something: Is Tennessee Governor Bill Lee Waiving a Red Flag or a White One?

Wed, 06/28/2023 - 16:00

By Rob Morse

After the Covenant School shooting in Nashville, Republican Governor Bill Lee of Tennessee announced that he wants a red flag law. I’m not sure if the governor is working for the voters here or surrendering to the press.

It isn’t clear what “red flag law” really means here and the Governor’s proposal seems to have shifted over time. In general, red flag laws allow the government to confiscate someone’s guns without the benefit of due process.

Gun Review: Smith & Wesson M&P 5.7 Pistol

Wed, 06/28/2023 - 12:00

After decades of consumers having exactly one option in a 5.7×28 pistol, the available choices have mushroomed in recent years. Now, in addition to the tried, tested, and proven OG FN FiveseveN MRD Mk3, gun buyers can also choose from pistols from KelTec, Ruger, Palmetto State Armory and, as of earlier this year, Smith & Wesson. And while the M&P 5.7 has a lot of the same features as its competitors, it has some notable differences, too.

Serial Offender: A Chronology of Joe Biden’s Anti-Gun Lies

Wed, 06/28/2023 - 10:00

By Lee Williams

Joe Biden has never let the truth get in the way of a good story. Or a campaign speech. Or the State of the Union Address. As a result, Biden has received more Pinocchios than a gift shop at Disney, especially when he talks about guns.

Biden has lied at least 304 times at more than 65 public events since taking office, according to an analysis of official White House transcripts by the Second Amendment Foundation’s Investigative Journalism Project.

Lies and Statistics: Using ‘Gun Violence’ Data to Make it Say Whatever You Want

Wed, 06/28/2023 - 08:00

There is a second, perhaps even more important qualification to state-to-state comparisons of gun violence: controlling crime is primarily a local decision. While state legislatures enact the criminal penalties for different offenses, local governments set the policies that determine whether someone is arrested and convicted. Cities and counties set spending on police and sheriff departments and policing policies. Most states have local elections for district attorneys and trial court judges. In the last few years, many Democrat district attorneys have been accused of going soft on violent criminals.

Cook County Prosecutors Drop Charges After 14-Year-Old Uses Mom’s Gun To Shoot Her Attacker

Tue, 06/27/2023 - 16:00

Chicago’s mainstream media seemed appalled that a mother would tell her teenage son to get her carry gun out of her car as she was being accosted in a working class neighborhood carry-out restaurant. In fact, the story went national with USA Today headlining the story, “A woman told her teen son to shoot man at a hot dog stand, police say. Both are charged with murder.”

A woman and her 14-year-old son have been criminally charged after authorities say she instructed the teenager to shoot a man at a Chicago hot dog stand.

Ruger Announces the Return of the Marlin 1894 Lever Action Rifle

Tue, 06/27/2023 - 12:00

Many, many moons ago, we reviewed the Marlin 1894C chambered in .357 magnum. It didn’t go well. That was back in the baddest of the bad old days of the Cerberus-owned Freedom Group conglomerate. They’d bought Marlin in 2008 and shut down its New Haven plant in 2011, moving production to Remington’s facility in Ilion, New York.

The only problem was, relocating the machinery and laying off nearly everyone who knew how to make a Marlin rifle was bad for for overall product quality.

Greene: Strict Gun Laws Actually Create Murder

Tue, 06/27/2023 - 08:00

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) doubled down on her defense of relaxed gun control laws, claiming “strict gun laws actually create murder.”

Greene opened her remarks by pointing to multiple shootings in Chicago on Memorial Day weekend that left 11 people dead and over 50 injured from gunshot wounds. She claimed Democrats failed to talk about or report those particular shootings.

“To carry a gun in Chicago you need a firearm owner ID and a concealed carry license, which are difficult to get,” Greene said.

Gun Meme of the Day: Animal Lover Edition

Mon, 06/26/2023 - 18:00

Okay it’s more of a hunting meme than a gun meme, but it’s an important PSA nonetheless. If you’re cold, they’re cold. Even though that often doesn’t make any sense cuz they’re all furry and stuff. But whatever. The point is that they’re tasty.

Local Laboratories Don’t Show the Effectiveness of Gun Control Laws Advocates Claim They Do

Mon, 06/26/2023 - 16:00

From the NRA-ILA . . .

Ninety years ago, U.S. Supreme Court Justice Louis Brandeis described a novel business regulation in a case then before the Court as one that “involves a vast extension of the area of control” exercised by the state. In an often-cited reference, he urged the Court to uphold the scheme. “Denial of the right to experiment may be fraught with serious consequences to the nation.

Pennsylvania Sheriff Backs Down, Agrees to Halt Warrantless Searches of Gun Dealers

Mon, 06/26/2023 - 14:30

It seems that a lawsuit and some publicity still has the power to concentrate the bureaucratic mind. At least they do in the case of Montgomery County Sheriff Sean Kilkenny who recently adopted an unconstitutionally wide interpretation of Pennsylvania’s gun control laws to ensure that firearms dealers are in compliance with all state and federal laws.

Sheriff Kilkenny, who doesn’t seem to have a good working knowledge of the Fourth Amendment, decided that a new reading of state statues gives him the right to search all 92 federally licensed gun dealers in his county to ensure they’re following the applicable laws.

Early Morning Amarillo, Texas Home Invader Shot Down By Armed Female Victim

Mon, 06/26/2023 - 14:00

Cedric Milligan, 53, didn’t finish near the top of his high school class. In fact, he might not have finished high school at all given his lack of common sense in breaking into a woman’s home in Amarillo, Texas.

Only the lowest of the low-information types don’t know of the Lone Star State’s reputation for the widespread embrace of gun ownership. They love their guns in Texas just like they love baseball, apple pie and all things American – at least outside of Austin.

Wake Forest Sociologist Takes Students to the Range to Learn About Gun Culture Firsthand

Mon, 06/26/2023 - 12:00

By David Yamane, Wake Forest University

I grew up in the liberal culture of the San Francisco Bay Area and never touched a firearm until I was 42 years old, living in North Carolina and teaching sociology at Wake Forest University.

For the past 10-plus years I have been deeply immersed in American gun culture both professionally and personally. I have both studied and am a member of the Liberal Gun Club, National Rifle Association and other gun-related groups.

Hunter Biden: ‘Illegals’ to Blame for Tossing His Gun in a Dumpster Near a School

Mon, 06/26/2023 - 10:00

Like father like son. Joe Biden’s made no shortage of overtly racist and bigoted remarks over the his long political career. For most of us, comments like those would get us fired, tossed out of polite society, and actively shunned. And let’s not forget DOCTOR Jill Biden referring to Hispanics as being “unique as breakfast tacos.”

Remember when a president’s family member was considered an embarrassment just because he was a redneck and liked to drink beer?

Bentivegna: It’s Almost As If the Founders Knew What They Were Doing When They Ensured the Right to Keep and Bear Arms

Mon, 06/26/2023 - 08:00

I do not like guns. I do not own one. I can count on one hand the number of times I have fired one. In my opinion, if hunters want to be true sportsmen, they should give the deer guns so they can shoot back.

Owning a gun for self defense is problematic unless you have extensive military or police training, have no children or teenagers in your house and never argue with any family members or anyone else.

The WaPo Explains What City Dwellers Don’t Get About Gun Ownership in Much of America

Sun, 06/25/2023 - 08:00

From the halls of democracy dying in darkness comes a quote that reminds us all how guns aren’t (and have never been) the problem. Our culture is. The guns haven’t changed, we have . . .

Montezuma County Sheriff Steve Nowlin (and many other older county residents I talked with) remembers bringing his gun to school, putting it in his locker and hunting rabbits after classes. Brian Hanson, retired superintendent of the Mancos School District, recalled that when he was a teacher, he once bought a gun from a student after math class.

Russians Suddenly Discover the Value of an Armed Populace

Sun, 06/25/2023 - 08:00

Mikhail B. Khodorkovsky, a Russian businessman who has sought to unite groups opposing Putin, called on Russians opposed to the regime to arm themselves.

“Now we see that only armed people can resist the dictatorship,” Khodorkovsky wrote on his Telegram channel. “Now there is a small window of opportunity when there is chaos on the streets and the security forces are not in control of the situation.”

He said the dramatic standoff would likely result in further repression.
