Tighten A Fishing Knot Correctly

Wed, 10/21/2015 - 19:17

How fishermen tie and tighten knots is vital to the effectiveness of that connection. And unless it’s done correctly, the knot will slip, fail, the line parts and a good fish is gone.

Financial Crisis: the Big One is Still Out There

Wed, 10/21/2015 - 19:16

I’m not one of those people who believes that a financial crisis can ever mean TEOTWAWKI — and in fact I don’t think TEOTWAWKI is an actual thing that can happen short of an asteroid strike. A complete failure of the global financial system would mean massive social unrest, some amount of starvation, and a decade or two of misery, yes, but not “we’re back to living in caves.” That said, massive social unrest and starvation are still a really big deal, and I think it’s important to be prepared for a minimum of two weeks without basic services.

Thoughts on Close-Quarters-Combat

Tue, 10/20/2015 - 17:04

Are any of us ready for a CQC event? Perhaps many of us fancy ourselves as pistoleers like the boys of Young Guns. Most of us would likely die thinking so if the you-know-what went down. I hyphenated the title of this piece on purpose. The point being to separate the components into distinct concepts.

Eight Great Duck Calling Tips

Tue, 10/20/2015 - 17:03

1) Never “over-call.” When ducks are committed to your spread, hush, calling can then only hurt your chances. In many public areas too many hunters call too much. In such a case, not calling at all may best lure ducks within range.

The EoTech’s are E-OK

Tue, 10/20/2015 - 17:02

When the rep from Smith and Wesson handed me their new model AR complete with an EOTech XPS-2 holographic weapon site (HWS) mounted, I was a little hesitant. That was only because I had never shot a firearm with a HWS sight on it, much less hunted with one. It was going to be a new experience for me.

SHTF Truck Idea: Use What the Terrorists Use?

Tue, 10/20/2015 - 17:01

The other day I was pondering the fuel possibilities for a SHTF truck, and mentioned that for a variety of reasons I had settled on diesel. But I hadn’t quite decided which truck, until someone mentioned that Toyota is coming up with a diesel Tundra soon.

Sig Sauer MCX: Auto-adjusting Gas Regulator or Manually Adjustable?

Tue, 10/20/2015 - 16:57

I recently turned a friend of mine on to the SIG MCX as a home defense gun. This gun has been getting rave reviews, and it’s intended to be a successor to the famous MP5 as a quite, close quarter battle weapon. I think a suppressed MCX with frangible ammo, an Aimpoint red dot, and a Surefire light would be a pretty amazing home defense gun — in fact, it’s hard to think of something better suited for that role.

Watch Your Step Near Those Deer Feeders!!

Mon, 10/19/2015 - 19:55

Two buddies– Mike Mooney and Gary McKendrie – were out the other day at their deer hunting property checking feeders, filling them, and looking at remote camera images. Fun stuff this work – learning where deer are living, and feeding, and planning where to place stands.

Hunt Wild Fruit Whitetails

Mon, 10/19/2015 - 19:55

Wild fruits are among the most important foods for deer during bow season, because it’s available to game long before acorns are ripe or corn fields are cut. Further, by the time most firearms seasons roll around, fruit has long since fallen and been consumed. Thus areas that draw deer and hold them for their fruity foods are pretty much the sole domain of bowhunters.

Coyotes a Bothersome Varmint

Mon, 10/19/2015 - 19:54

Eleven year old Dallas Rustin from Laurel, Mississippi stepped out the front door of his rural home to spot two coyotes lounging out in the pasture not far from the house. He was alarmed by that. He knew the family had been having issues with coyotes coming close to the house and even taking down newborn calves. They had just lost two more new ones.

2015 Recommendations Under $200

Sat, 10/17/2015 - 14:33

At the $200 price level we are at the line between gear for folks that like nice stuff and stuff for aficionados only. We are also at a price point in the market where there are a bevy of classic designs–Benchmade Mini Griptilians and Zebralight SC52s. This is all very good stuff and probably the last rational purchase price point. Beyond this the stuff is usually gussied up with frills or very small batch. But here, we have some awesome, awesome stuff.

Dialing Up Your SHTF Shotgun

Sat, 10/17/2015 - 14:30

A good shotgun is an absolute must have for any survival weaponry cache. Even if you consider building the most minimalist SHTF gun kit, then a shotgun has to be on the list. A plain Jane version can give you basically the same protective coverage, but in today’s market of accessories galore, a good smoothbore can be turned into something really great.

How to Win the Gun Debate (Video)

Thu, 10/15/2015 - 13:08

Julie Borowski is a young woman who has become well-known proponent of liberty – including gun rights. Her straightforward and often-campy videos have helped spread the word of freedom in today’s online world.

In this video, she talks about the fear of guns that’s behind so many gun-haters – and takes on the open-carry nuts who think it’s a swell idea to take their AR or AK to lunch with them in a popular restaurant – just to freak people out.

Trust me on this: It’s not getting people used to seeing guns – it’s just reinforcing all the bad negative stereotypes about gun owners.

Check it out – it’s well worth a watch. Do you agree with her idea on how to win?

What is the Purpose of Gun Control?

Thu, 10/15/2015 - 12:51

An interesting article was posted last June, and was recently reposted elsewhere, where it came to my attention. It looks at numbers and data, and draws conclusions about whether gun control helps reduce crime – or makes a citizenry more susceptible to criminals by taking away their means of self-defense
