Proximity to Gun Stores a Good Thing

Mon, 11/02/2015 - 17:01

A news article hidden away on the bottom of the page in the USA Today news revealed an interesting piece of information. It stated that 98 per cent of the U.S. population lives within 10 miles of a gun store. This statement was compiled by some national mayor’s organization. I feel certain it was presented to be negative. That was the exact opposite of how I took the news.

Deer Hot Spot: Fence Hole

Mon, 11/02/2015 - 17:00

A man-made fence forms a barrier to whitetails.  Even a chest-high agricultural fence that deer easily can jump over can alter whitetail activity.  In good deer country make it a habit to walk fence lines, especially a high, well-maintained one.  Look for places along the fence where deer are crossing, advises ace hunter Ernie Calandrelli with Quaker Boy Game Calls in upstate New York.  If the fence is in good condition, anywhere there’s a low wire, broken fence pole, or hole underneath the fence, deer may funnel through that opening because it’s the easiest place for them to get through the barrier.

Black Rain Ordnance Strike JP LMOS Carrier Upgrade & Hiperfire 24E

Sun, 11/01/2015 - 18:59

Over the years since I was the first editor to review the Black Rain Ordnance Fallout15, my super awesome little custom BRO rifle has been a host for numerous optics reviews. Currently the rifle features a Burris AR553 which has been a blast to shoot with. It is a really beautiful gun which many note has had some obvious wear over time from thousands of rounds chipping away on the shell deflector area and a few dings from me using it versus just babying it.

Deer Hunting Hot Spot: Field “Neck Down”

Sun, 11/01/2015 - 18:48

Field “neck downs,” or secluded “bottlenecks” surrounded by timber are natural feeding areas for whitetails because they have quick access to deep woods cover should it be needed, says noted and well-traveled hunter Will Primos of Mississippi.  Such places also are the usual spots where deer enter and leave a field for feeding, so a hunter has the best chance to catch a deer in such a spot at first light (as deer leave a field) or late in the day (just as they’re moving from woods bedding areas).

Simple SHTF Shooting Routines

Sun, 11/01/2015 - 18:48

If you’re going to keep your skills up, then shooting your prep or survival guns off the range bench is not enough. Certainly any shooting practice is better than no practice as all, but sitting in a chair with your gun propped up on a sand bag popping paper targets a hundred yards away is far from realistic when it comes to real world defense scenarios. When a serious SHTF scenario really unfolds, you are going to want a lot more practical shooting skills than range work.

Keep An Open Mind on Open Sights

Sun, 11/01/2015 - 18:46

Fewer rifles these days come from the factory with open sights. There are exceptions though. The Winchester 94s, Marlin 336s, 1894s and 1895s will have open sights. Some rimfire rifles, bolt guns, lever actions and semi-autos still come equipped with open sights. Big bore African double rifles sport open sights.

New Book: Ted Koppel’s ‘Lights Out’ Details Terrifying Grid Down Scenario

Thu, 10/29/2015 - 11:41

Veteran newsman Ted Koppel’s new book, Lights Out: A Cyberattack, A Nation Unprepared, Surviving the Aftermath, is making waves this week because it takes the EMP/cyberattack grid down scenario firmly out of the realm of prepper blogs and into the mainstream. It’s not every day that you hear someone of Koppel’s stature talking calmly and realistically about the likelihood of a TEOTWAWKI scenario in which 90% of the US population is dead within the first year.

It has not only been embraced (for good, bad or ugly) by the U.S. military, and law enforcement for decades, but the everyday consumer as well. It is now manufactured by over 120 gun makers worldwide and the list is growing.
