Ancient “Woolly” Wolf Spotted in Nepal May Be a New Species

Fri, 04/29/2016 - 10:58

The Himalayan wolf was first catalogued by scientists nearly 200 years ago, and many have suspected the species to be among the oldest of wolves. However, it was only recently that scientists discovered that the Himalayan wolf, or “woolly” wolf, may not actually be an old subspecies of the gray wolf at all. Instead, it may be something else entirely. According to a study recently published in the journal ZooKeys, a team of international scientists concluded that the woolly wolf diverged from gray wolves a long time...

Turning Shed Hunting Into an Activity for Two

Thu, 04/28/2016 - 10:26

Now that weather is finally warming up for most of the country, there is no time like the present to enjoy time spent in the great outdoors. With hunting season behind us for now, pursuing large game isn’t currently an option, but that doesn’t mean we can’t still get out there and look for sheds. Antlers have most definitely been dropped by now and all that remains is for you to go and find them, but you don’t have to do it alone. Shed hunting is a great activity if you’re seeking to get busy moving about in the wilderness. Not only is it enjoyable for you, but it can also be...

Gun Rights Activists Ask for Chicago Mayor to Step Down after Crime Milestone

Wed, 04/27/2016 - 10:36

At least one gun rights group has asked for Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel to resign after local media reported that the number of people shot in the city this year already surpassed 1,000. According to The Chicago Tribune, this number is not surprising for Chicago, but was reached far earlier than in previous years. In the first four months of 2014, “only” 480 people have been shot within city limits. Gun rights advocates pointed to the shocking new report as more proof of how...

Determine Your Dominant Eye to Strengthen Shooting Skills

Tue, 04/26/2016 - 13:13

As you gaze at wild game through the sights of a firearm or bow, you have probably noticed that your eyes naturally behave a certain way. It could be that you instinctively close one of your eyes without even realizing you’re doing so or why. This behavior is as result of having a dominant eye, which plays a big part in your shooting skills. Eye dominance is a phenomenon that comes up frequently in shooting sports, but what exactly is it? Although many of us have one eye that is stronger than the other in terms of vision, that is actually not the root of eye dominance. The prescription...

Pennslyvania Bowfisherman Takes Record Common Carp

Tue, 04/26/2016 - 11:00

The waters of southwestern Pennsylvania has plenty of monsters below the surface, and bowfisherman Jordan Miller managed to arrow one on a fishing trip late last month. Miller, who runs Nocturnal Addiction Bowfishing, stunned his fellow anglers when he shot a massive 49-pound, 7-ounce common carp in the Youghiogheny Reservoir. “One of the best trips I've had,” an elated Miller wrote on Facebook....

Iowa Biologists Capture Behemoth 47-pound Muskie

Tue, 04/26/2016 - 09:57

Think there are no monster muskies in Iowa? Think again. Biologists with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) spotted this massive 47-pound muskellunge in Spirit Lake Hatchery during a routine collection earlier in the month. Experts say that the large fish missed the state record by only three pounds. “The current state record for muskie is 50 pounds, 6 ounces and 52 pounds, also from Big Spirit Lake,” stated the DNR. “It was caught by Kevin Cardwell of Spirit Lake in August 2000.”However, since it was caught by a DNR...

Mon, 04/25/2016 - 13:55

Belt-fed squad automatic weapons, are among the most impressive examples of military small arms technology on the battlefield today. Based on existing technology while incorporating modern advances to keep it relevant in the 21st century, SAWs bridge the gap between heavy machinegun and infantryman’s rifle. The standard issue SAW for America’s armed forces is the M249 SAW. A belt-fed fully-automatic light machinegun chambered in 5.56mm. While many returning veterans have hundreds of hours of experience with these impressive machines, few have any idea how they’re made. To get a...

Mon, 04/25/2016 - 12:23

Who needs an ATV when you have a Barbie jeep? This father decided to have his kid help out with yard work in the best way possible. After attaching a leaf blower to the Barbie jeep a ingenious utility vehicle was born. This simple hack was both entertaining for all and effective. While a barbie jeep probably won't be replacing your ATV for most activities, leaf clean up seems like something they are uniquely suited for. This is pure parenting genius. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RbHLKNeDKpg...

The Console Vault In-vehicle Safe

Mon, 04/25/2016 - 08:07

When you carry a firearm for self-defense, you will inevitably run in to a situation where you will be forced to leave your gun in your car. It could be for 10 minutes while you go in to a government building to pay your water bill or, it could be all day while you’re at work. If you’re like me, it doesn’t matter how long you’re away from the car, there is always that nagging feeling that your gun is in the car, unsecured. That feeling was something I wanted to do away with so, I began the hunt for a reliable safe for my vehicle. During my search, I came across a few different...

Graphic Video: Man Cuts Down Tree with Terrifying Surprise

Fri, 04/22/2016 - 13:47

Never expect trees to be completely empty. Instead, think of them as living environments that sustain a variety of other creatures, such as insects, rodents, and sometimes, even snakes. This man got a nasty surprise after he discovered that the tree he recently fell was in fact occupied---and he aaccidentally cut a snake in half. Presumably, the snake had wormed its way into the center of the tree by using tunnels that some other critter made. Snakes do not usually like to den inside wood, but as a place to hide from predators, it can't be beat. Unfortunately, it got in the way of this...

Video: “Painting” with Gunpowder

Fri, 04/22/2016 - 09:13

This is one of the most interesting ways to do wood burning that we've seen so far. We're not entirely sure how common this technique is, but it results in beautiful artwork. Just be careful. Unlike with a wood burning pen, this method does carry a chance of setting your immediate area on fire---and possibly explosions. Be aware that you are setting fire to loose gunpowder, which is rarely a good idea. Also, that deer has way bigger antlers than it has any right to, but we're not complaining. https://youtu.be/4zWaPvEG6q0...

The BAREBOW! Chronicles: The Footprints-in-the-Snow Insult

Thu, 04/21/2016 - 14:09

The story recounted here took place in October of 2001 and was my first (and only) Brown Bear hunt on the Alaska Peninsula.  Mr. Murphy’s chicanery continued unabated, but in forms or disguises I had not yet run into. After a commercial flight to Anchorage, a second-tier air service delivered me to Port Heiden, on the Bering seacoast. From there, it was a relatively short hop into outfitter Kurt Lepping’s base-camp. A hot meal was waiting for me---my first of the day---and 30 minutes later I found myself climbing into Kurt’s Super Cub and heading for a...

Video: Fish Guzzling Beer from a Can

Thu, 04/21/2016 - 09:16

This fish may be out of water, but it sure looks thirsty. Can fish even get drunk off beer? Either way, it's probably not a wise---and some would say, ethical---thing to do. A few years back there was even a short-lived fad of drinking beer from the mouths of live fish. We'd certainly discourage these kind of antics as they can't be good for the fish. Remember, if you intend to catch and release, try to put the fish back in the water as soon as possible. That means without treating it to an alcoholic beverage. As to the earlier question, fish can get drunk, but apparently on Read more »

Video: ‘River Monsters’ Crew Rescues Angler from Remote Island

Tue, 04/19/2016 - 15:07

A popular fishing documentary turned into more of a drama after its TV crew found a stranded angler on a remote Australian Island last November. Footage of the rescue has now been released, and it shows a harrowing account of what simple heatstroke is capable of. In the search of the famed Queensland grouper, River Monsters host Jeremy Wade and his crew were filming near a group of uninhabited islands in northern Australia. While taking video of the shore, the television crew noticed a cooler---which was odd on an uninhabited island---and decided to investigate further. Suddenly, a...

Hummer H1 Conquering Houston Floods

Tue, 04/19/2016 - 09:26

As of Monday afternoon, emergency personnel performed as many as 1,200 search-and-rescue missions after Houston was hit by a catastrophic flood. High waters caused hundreds of people to be evacuated from their homes, but daring---and some would say, highly foolish---motorists are still on the road. Water levels can be difficult to judge in a flood however, and we would never recommend driving through these conditions in any kind of vehicle---except maybe a small boat. However, Read more »

A Hunter’s Guide to the 6 Best Turkey Shotguns

Mon, 04/18/2016 - 15:00

They say spring time turns a man’s fancies to thoughts of love. That’s kind of true, for those of us that love to hunt turkeys, spring time is the right time to find a nice big tom turkey looking for love---and make some dinner out of him. To do that, you need a shotgun. Luckily there’s some really great shotguns designed to do precisely that. ...

Instant Gratification In The Classroom? New Blended Learning From The NRA

Mon, 04/18/2016 - 13:53

A couple of months ago, the rear window on my Cadillac Deville stopped working. No big deal, I got industrious and swapped out the motor. Unfortunately, there was still no joy – just a weird clicking noise when I activated the switch. At this point, not being a car mechanic, and never having run into this problem before, some education was in order. Back in the day, I would have had to go find someone who had run across all sorts of power window glitches before and get some instruction for them. Or perhaps I might have bought a comprehensive book about Cadillac Deville electrical systems....

Video: Shooting Tattoo Gun Rounds out of a Shotgun

Mon, 04/18/2016 - 11:01

As it turns out, tattoo gun parts actually fit perfectly inside some shells. However, just because you can doesn't necessarily mean you should. Matt from Demolition Ranch recently uploaded a video where he shot some donated ink gun parts out of his trusty shotgun. As expected, they didn't exactly fly straight, but they were some of the more effective rounds that he experimented with so far. Surprisingly, the coil from the ink gun made for one of the more powerful rounds, punching straight through Matt's target dummy and severing a branch behind...
