Birthday Fishing Trip Yields Lifetime Double-Catch

Thu, 08/04/2016 - 10:02

Some of the greatest stories in fishing involve getting a two-for-one deal. It may be rare, but it does happen, and it recently happened on an epic scale to Alaska resident Dick Wyland.

For his upcoming 84th birthday, Wyland’s wife gave him a guided fishing trip aboard Seldovia Fishing Adventures. Aboard this trip, he hooked a yelloweye rockfish and started reeling. During the process, however, Wyland’s fishing rod started to bend even more, and it was revealed that another fish had grabbed onto the yelloweye. That fish

Pink Camo Now Legal for Hunting in Three States

Wed, 08/03/2016 - 14:15

Hunting is getting a new look as blaze-pink camouflage is beginning to grow more popular. New York recently joined Wisconsin and Colorado in allowing hunters to wear the new-look camouflage in an effort to appeal to women who would rather not wear blaze-orange. Previous New York state law said that hunters must wear 250 square inches of blaze-orange gear. That’s roughly like wearing a hat and vest. Hunters still have to wear that much high-visibility gear, but now they can pick blaze-pink. Majid Sarmadi, a textile science professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison said in aRead more »

Can Alligator Gar Control Asian Carp?

Wed, 08/03/2016 - 12:12

The Great Lakes are under attack by an invasive fish species that could potentially devastate the region’s $7 billion annual fishing industry. With no natural predators and an insatiable appetite, the Asian carp (photo below), originally brought to the United States to help rid catfish farms and wastewater treatment ponds of algae, can eradicate entire fish populations by consuming all of the available plankton, which are the primary food source for those sport fish we love to pursue. Video: Bear Break-In Totals SUV

Wed, 08/03/2016 - 10:58

Although vehicle owners may run into issues with their cars over the years, the phrase “totaled from the inside” is one few experience. That is, unless you live in bear country and forget to lock your car doors. When David Meurer glanced out from his home early one morning, he noticed that the windows of his vehicle appeared to be fogged up. At first he wrote it off as humidity, but a closer inspection revealed a young bear to be trapped inside. The driver’s door was left unlocked, and the exterior handles simply require a gentle pull to open, a task easily accomplished by paw....

Video: Fleeing Lobster Stopped by Epic Catch

Wed, 08/03/2016 - 10:44

Fishing for lobster can be a lot of fun, but success doesn’t always come easy. Sure, the process is predictable to a point, but you must be alert and on top of your game. It is entirely possible that you may lose a lobster long before or even after you get it in the net, unless you happen to have catlike lobster catching reflexes such as the guy in the video below. Lobsters are fast-moving creatures, and all it takes is the slightest provocation to launch them backwards at a speed of 15 feet per second. Since reverse swimming is done erratically, it can be difficult to ascertain what path...

Video: Gar Fishing Without a Hook

Wed, 08/03/2016 - 09:03

A rod and some rope is all these northeast Texas fishermen need to catch gar. Heading out on the lake to do some crappie fishing, they noticed a good number of gar flipping around on the water. Bobby Barrack and his cousin Travis switched up their tackle and decided to try out an unorthodox style of fishing, using a hookless lure. It’s one of those quirky methods of fishing - like using cane poles that die-hard anglers should try and check off of their “outdoors bucket list.” Using long pieces of nylon and a weight that varies...

Alaskan Whale Watchers Rescue Deer with Lasso

Wed, 08/03/2016 - 08:10

A group of whale watchers passing by Juneau’s Shelter Island last week expected to just see some humpbacks, but instead responded to a strange radio message regarding drowning deer. According to the Gastineau Guiding Company,  an 18-passenger tour vessel guided by naturalist Audrey Benson and captained by Annette Smith was in the area on Wednesday when they overheard a radio message regarding two deer attempting to swim between the islands. It was not unusual for deer to travel from island to island by swimming, and despite...

Former NFL Player Warren Sapp Bitten by Shark

Tue, 08/02/2016 - 09:09

Football players are used to taking hits, but hits by a shark are a little outside of the norm. Warren Sapp, a Hall of Fame defensive tackle, is no stranger to taking a lick on dry land, but now he’s experienced blows in the water as well. During a lobster fishing excursion in the Florida Keys, Sapp had a run-in with a 4-foot-long shark. Apparently the two did not see eye to eye over which of them would be having lobster for dinner, and this difference of opinion led to Sapp getting some tooth action. As he looked for lobster during Florida’s mini season, Sapp noticed the shark...

Video: Snake Hitches a Ride Under Car Hood

Tue, 08/02/2016 - 08:50

It sometimes seems there’s no end to folks looking to bum a ride from one location to another. Once in a while they ask nicely and even offer gas money, but other times they slither right on in, free-loading the entire trip. A group of travelers were surprised by a surprise passenger that showed itself as they were moving down the road in south-central Russia. Out from under the hood, up near the windshield wipers, a snake appeared. After hanging out on the hood for a few moments, the snake apparently reached its desired destination and departed from the vehicle via the front bumper...

Survival DIY: 7 Steps to Building an Aluminum Lamp

Fri, 07/29/2016 - 15:41

A DIY survival lamp can come in handy for many situations. Not only can it provide a needed light source during a power outage, but you could cook food over it in a pinch, or use it to take the chill out of the air during a cold evening. This lamp burns on petroleum jelly, or what most people know by the brand Vaseline. The wick of this lamp is a cotton ball, and the lamp’s base and structure is made from aluminum foil. It’s easy to construct and can burn anywhere from 15 minutes to an hour; the duration varies on how much Vaseline is in the lamp. Let’s get started. You’ll...

Video: Rare White Humpback Whale Spotted

Fri, 07/29/2016 - 14:35

The ocean has many amazing wonders to behold, one of which is the annual migration of humpback whales. The animal shown in the video below, a rare white humpback whale, was recently spotted off of New South Wales. In 1985, the first white humpback was seen in this exact area. Finally photographed in 1991, the whale was dubbed Migaloo, which is an Aboriginal term for “white fella.” This whale, which is close to 12 or 13 meters in length, has sun damage on its skin. The whale seen recently, is much smaller and a brighter white. Migaloo is thought to have offspring, seen for the first...

Video: Bear Mistakes Garbage Truck for Meals on Wheels

Thu, 07/28/2016 - 10:58

As humans, we like to ride in style. We pick out big trucks and fast cars, customizing them to cater to our tastes and show off our personalities. While most wild animals can’t necessarily say the same, there is at least one bear out there that seems to have a preferred ride, that being a garbage truck. Since food is a top priority as far as bears are concerned, what better way to get around than on a rolling buffet? One bear in Los Alamos, New Mexico, decided to give this a try, incorporating both travel and sustenance into its day after hitching a ride on a garbage truck travelling...

Video: Great White Shark Steals Angler’s Striped Bass

Wed, 07/27/2016 - 09:18

It is a great feeling to get your fishing mojo back after it has been absent for a spell. The feeling of being back on your game is a good one, at least until a shark steps in and steals your catch. Stephen Lamb had exactly this experience while fishing with his wife, Linda, in Chatham, Massachusetts. As he excitedly reeled in a striped bass with Linda’s wholehearted support, the two got a surprise neither expected, that being a hungry great white shark. The shark made its move in pursuit of the fish, and Linda’s joy quickly turned to fear as she suddenly decided she did not want to...

Video: Watch the Micro 5.56 Minigun in Action

Wed, 07/27/2016 - 08:31

Talk about putting the "mini" in minigun. This is the XM556 Microgun from Empty Shell Llc. Visually, it appears to be a scaled-down version of the iconic General Electric M143 Minigun. It also just so happens to be shorter than a standard AR-15, is highly portable, electric, and chambered in 5.56mm. In a world without the Hughes Amendment, we'd expect these things to sell like hot cakes when they hit the market. For those history buffs out there, it may look familiar because of its resemblance to the XM214 Microgun, another design by General Electric that also happens to be chambered...

Video: Can Alligators Climb Trees?

Fri, 07/08/2016 - 09:17

Alligators already have a lot of natural advantages; it's part of why they've been around so long. However, is the ability to climb trees among their skill set? A man in Cape Coral, Florida, says he was shocked to find what appeared to be a 5-foot alligator in a tree near his property. "Saw something in a tree, at first I thought maybe it was a lizard," Ronald Saracino told WINK. "The more I looked at it, the more I thought it was actually probably a 5-foot gator." In a post to his Facebook,...

US Army Vet Saves Bald Eagle by Shooting the Fishing Line Keeping It Trapped

Fri, 07/08/2016 - 09:00

How good are your sharpshooting skills? Are you good enough to shoot a piece of fishing line 70 feet up in a tree, blowing in the wind, without hitting a young bald eagle attached to it? For most people, that would be a tall task, but for U.S. Army Veteran Jason Galvin, it was just Friday. "We have seen a lot of crazy rescues, but this one is certainly unique," veterinarian Michelle Willette of the University of Minnesota Raptor Center, where the bird was later taken, told the Read more »

Videos: Three Quick Reminders That Hot Brass Hurts

Thu, 07/07/2016 - 12:48

Getting burned by hot brass sucks. It doesn't matter how tough you are, getting burned by hot brass sucks. These three videos show that no one is immune to the pains of hot brass. The only defense against hot brass is proper shooting attire and a little situational awareness. Try and keep those two things in mind while you are shooting this summer. In this video one of the models in Dan Bilzerian's entourage was unfortunate enough to get sprayed by hot brass from a minigun Dan Bilzerian is one lucky man. #WeaponVault Posted by Read more »
