‘Crawlers + Channel Catfish = Summer Fun

Thu, 07/07/2016 - 12:01

In many small rivers throughout North America, channel cats are plentiful and – even better – they’re often willing biters. And unlike sunfish and crappies, which are also numerous and fairly easy to catch, channel cats grow large enough to test the strength and endurance of most any angler. Two Simple Systems Depending on the conditions, it’s best to use one of two simple rigs for targeting channel cats. The first is as basic as it gets: Tie a Read more »

Rock Avalanche Collapses Alaskan Mountainside

Thu, 07/07/2016 - 09:17

Mountainous peaks reaching upward toward the sky are a sight to behold. Taking in the beauty of such scenery can be incredibly relaxing, provided there is no sound to accompany it. However, if you begin to hear a dull roar, things are about to change. The rumblings of an avalanche are the first indicator that the earth’s surface is about to dramatically shift. It could be that a small avalanche is occurring, or maybe something on a larger scale is underway, such as the case with the Lamplugh Glacier rock...

Maryland Natural Resources Police Officer Photobombed by Bear

Thu, 07/07/2016 - 09:05

When you’re out and about enjoying nature, sometimes you find yourself unexpectedly sharing space with wild animals. If you’re lucky, you just might be able to share the video screen with them – from afar, of course – just as one Maryland Natural Resources Police Officer did recently. While responding to a call about a bear getting too close for comfort, the officers were able to lay eyes on the root of the complaint. There, in the Patapsco River watershed in Baltimore County, was a black bear scavenging...

Video: Man Takes Jumping Carp to the Face

Wed, 07/06/2016 - 10:49

Mishaps are a part of fishing. You never know when things will go awry during your attempts at reeling in a big one. All we can hope is to be confronted with comedy instead of tragedy. One endless source of mishaps is the carp. Though there are many reasons carp jump, such as to regulate air in their swim bladders, they are commonly seen leaping from the water in the presence of watercraft. This is a pretty entertaining sight, unless you’re in their flight path as clearly proven in the video below. Tim Wells is seen setting out on a bowfishing expedition, minding his business as he...

Tiger Shark Pups Seen on Sonogram

Tue, 07/05/2016 - 14:55

It is pretty common for expectant mothers to get an ultrasound of their unborn babies before leaving the doctor’s office with a sonogram picture of their developing offspring. What is not so common, however, is for that mother to be a tiger shark having her ultrasound done at sea. James Sulikowski, who works at the University of New England as a professor of marine science, has changed our perception of the typical sonogram by showing us some shark pups. By intubating a pregnant tiger shark in order to keep water flowing through her gills and placing her on a board to keep her in place,...

Video: Gun vs. Bow Accuracy Test

Tue, 07/05/2016 - 08:39

This is an age-old matchup that the bow probably hasn't won since muzzleloaders were invented. Just don't let any amateur historians catch you saying that, or they might be liable to chew your ear off with all the reasons why it wasn't until much later that firearms truly surpassed bows in modern warfare. However, with all that modern technology has to offer, can the bow stage a comeback? In this hypothetical test, Demolition Ranch's Matt takes on Lucas from ArcheryTalk.com for a one-on-one battle of supremacy. This side-by-side competition mostly focuses on accuracy at different ranges,...

Video: Anglers Feed Walleyes by Hand

Fri, 07/01/2016 - 13:28

Videos showing people hand-feeding bluegills, largemouth bass – even tarpon – from a dock are fairly commonplace nowadays. This clip of anglers doling out what appears to be trimmings from the cleaning station to a pack of hungry walleyes is something else altogether. The scene is Booi’s Fly-In Lodge on Ontario’s Trout Lake, and judging by the size of the fish, and their apparent lack of inhibition, it looks like the lake might just be a walleye angler’s dream destination. There’s one thing that makes this clip different from the others;...

Video: Man Sails Atlantic with Feathered First Mate

Thu, 06/30/2016 - 10:09

Life at sea can get lonely at times for even the most anti-social of beings. A long period of time spent in seclusion can drive us to crave company, but being out in the middle of the ocean can sure limit your options for companionship. In order to avoid the pangs of isolation, it is worthwhile to consider bringing a friend along, even if that friend is of a species other than your own. Frenchman Guirec Soudée is sailing across the...

Ball Python Unable to Move on Fleece Blanket

Wed, 06/29/2016 - 15:33

This snake is going nowhere fast. Synthetic Fleece blankets owe their popularity to their incredibly soft texture. That same soft texture also causes issues for some snakes. In this video a ball python is learning how to slither across a fleece blanket with limited success. Instead of gripping the blanket with its slithering body, the snake was just “moon walking.” The slick fleece surface created an impassable surface for the snake and an entertaining video for us. ...

Lab Swallows Fishing Hook, Needs Surgery

Wed, 06/29/2016 - 14:51

There is a saying that silence is golden, unless you have a puppy, in which case silence is very suspicious. This is because puppies have a tendency to be curious and get into trouble. One such puppy, a black Lab named Henry, has unfortunately proved this to be true in a scenario that is every dog owner’s nightmare. Recently, Sean Whittington and his 11-month-old pup became separated for a moment while walking along a riverbank in Australia. Upon Henry’s return, Whittington noticed a length of fishing line hanging out of the canine’s mouth. A quick tug revealed that the fishing line...

Vintage Video: Grizzly Attacks Bear Researchers

Wed, 06/29/2016 - 12:43

Imagine waking up in your comfy bed only to find a group of strange people trying to pierce your ear for some unwanted jewelry. You’d naturally be more than a little upset. The grizzly bear in this vintage video had that very experience and understandably took out its frustrations on whatever it could find, including the research team’s station wagon. Perhaps the bear didn’t get a full dose of tranquilizer, or maybe it wore off before the men completed their work. Whichever the case, the situation turned into a dangerously close encounter, and it was fortunate that the bruin was still...

Squirrel Removes Child’s Loose Tooth

Mon, 06/27/2016 - 08:26

If ever there was an embarrassing dad story for the record books, this just might be it. As kids growing up, many of us had to deal with dear old dad’s ideas for getting rid of loose teeth. Some of those ideas may have seemed outlandish at the time, but then this dad comes along and uses a squirrel to get the job done. Setting out to achieve what he dubs an internet first, David Freiheit of Montreal places his camera near a park bench where his daughter takes a seat. The plan is to take advantage of local wildlife by putting them on the tooth removal payroll. In order to accomplish this,...

Video: The Famous Bipedal Black Bear is Alive and Well

Fri, 06/24/2016 - 09:30

After months without a single sighting of their favorite member of the local wildlife scene, residents in and around the communities of Oak Ridge, Jefferson and West Milford, New Jersey, are relieved to discover that Pedals, the bipedal black bear, is alive and well. The bear gained social media fame last year because of its penchant for ambling about upright on its hind legs due to injuries to both forelegs. Because Pedals hadn’t been spotted long after black bears normally come out of hibernation, area residents and the New Jersey Fish & Wildlife Agency feared the bear may have...

This U.S. Navy SEAL Is Challenging Hillary Clinton’s AR-15 Ban

Thu, 06/16/2016 - 19:31

NRA News Commentator and Veteran U.S. Navy SEAL Dom Raso has a message for the political hacks pretending they know an AR-15 from a double-barreled shotgun: stop talking. Raso’s newly released commentary “The AR-15: Americans’ Best Defense Against Terror and Crime,” challenges Hillary Clinton’s response to the attack at Pulse nightclub in Orlando. She looked past the obvious enemy—radical Islamic terror—and instead said “weapons of war have no place on our streets” and that we need to ban AR-15s...

Video: Spear-fisherman Captures The Moment He Was Attacked By a Shark

Thu, 06/16/2016 - 10:15

Shark attacks are rare, but when they happen it's terrifying.  Brad Vale was fishing off the coast of Australia when he noticed a shark circling him. Just seconds later the shark swam at him with incredible speed and bit his leg. Luckily he was armed with a speargun which he used to fend off the shark. Vale was not seriously injured in the attack but he still suffered lacerations on his leg.  ...
