Sharing the Ocean with Jellyfish

Wed, 06/15/2016 - 09:09

Summer is nearly upon us, and it won’t be long until we’re able to fully embrace warm-weather activities. Whether you’ll be doing some kayak fishing or surf casting this summer on the ocean, you are going to have to share the water with some unfriendly fellas, and one to respect is the jellyfish. When participating in watersports, be it fishing or simply enjoying a day at the beach, it is helpful to be able to recognize potential threats that may exist. Depending on where you’ll be dipping your toes, there could be a warning system in place to alert you to possible dangers present...

Shark Eats Smaller Shark on Tag Retrieval Mission

Tue, 06/14/2016 - 15:25

On what was a routine shark tag retrieval mission, the crew at University of Delaware's Ocean Exploration, Remote Sensing, Biogeography Lab (or ORB Lab) managed to take a once-in-a-lifetime photo. In the above image, a sand tiger shark had wrapped its jaws around a smaller dogfish shark, which in turn swallowed a menhaden that was used as bait. Sand tiger sharks make a diet out out of their smaller cousins, but rarely can any angler boast of catching two sharks with one bait fish. "We caught one large female on our first line Friday, but we were not expecting to catch her like this!" ORB...

Gun Laws Don’t Deter Terrorists

Tue, 06/14/2016 - 12:35

Americans were shocked and disgusted to learn of another act of terrorism on our soil, this time in Orlando. In the aftermath of this terrorist attack, President Obama and Hillary Clinton renewed calls for more gun control, including a ban on whole categories of semi-automatic firearms. They are desperate to create the illusion that they’re doing something to protect us because their policies can’t and won’t keep us safe. This transparent head-fake should scare every American, because it will do nothing to prevent the next attack. The terrorist in Orlando had been investigated...

Video: Man Trains Giant Bass to Jump Through Hoops

Mon, 06/13/2016 - 08:33

Whoever said you can't teach an old bass new tricks? After all, if you've ever seen those videos of goldfish being trained to play soccer, then you'll already know that few things are impossible. In this video, a YouTuber by the name of The Fish Whisperer demonstrates his method of getting a largemouth bass to jump through hoops. Sure, it takes a gizzard shad for the trick to work, but it is still pretty neat to see. Contrary to popular belief, you can actually teach fish to do tricks. Naturally, some species are easier to train...

Video: Never Underestimate a Black Bear

Fri, 06/10/2016 - 08:48

Just because it's not a grizzly doesn't mean you can rest easy around these large animals. Black bears have a reputation for being shy, easy to scare, and sometimes not very smart, but they can still surprise you. In fact, those who live in black bear territory will be the first to tell you that these bears can learn pretty fast. This video recently surfaced online, showing a family of tourists watching a bear from their car. It is not known when or where this footage was taken, but it is immediately clear that the tourists have little experience with black bears---letting it come close...

Yellowstone Visitor Walks into Hot Spring, No Body to Recover

Fri, 06/10/2016 - 08:38

Officials at Yellowstone National Park say they were unable to recover the body of a 23-year-old man who slipped into a hot spring on Tuesday. Due to a combination of extreme heat and acidity, park rangers said the body was beyond retrieving and any further attempts to do so would be futile. The man, Colin Nathaniel Scott of Portland, was visiting Norris Geyser Basin with his sister when they left the boardwalk---strictly against park recommendations---and walked 225 yards over to the hot spring. Nathaniel's sister, Sable Scott, told rangers that he slipped and fell inside. "Using extreme...

Florida Alligator Killed after Being Spotted with Human Body in Mouth

Thu, 06/09/2016 - 08:19

Florida wildlife officials and police were called to a gruesome scene after witnesses in Lakeland say they saw an alligator carrying a man's body in its mouth on Tuesday. The 9-foot-long alligator was first spotted in Lake Hunter by a passerby, who called 911. "I've got a dead body over here in the lake," the witness said in the record of the call. "Uh, it looks like an alligator is trying to pull it down under." The Lakeland Police Department acknowledge that there have been reports of an aggressive alligator in the area, particularly near a local boat ramp, just days before. However,...

Photos: Bizarre Wild Two-headed Turkey Caught on Camera

Wed, 06/08/2016 - 12:13

With the prevalence of the internet, we’ve seen some weird stuff about wild turkeys. White-feathered turkeys and bearded and gobbling hens have all been captured on camera. However, there might be something even weirder in Omaha, NE! In early June, my father was visiting his parents at their home on the outskirts of the city. There have always been an abundance of turkeys in the area that enjoy visiting my grandparents’ bird feeders, but it wasn’t until this spring that an extra special turkey appeared. Read more »

Woman Attempting to Prove Vegans Can Do Anything Dies Summiting Mt. Everest

Tue, 05/24/2016 - 09:22

Maria “Marisa” Strydom had many goals in mind when she set out to climb Mount Everest, and one of them was to show that vegans were not weak. The 34-year-old university lecturer from Australia announced her intent to climb the notoriously dangerous mountain – which had claimed 22 lives last year – in part to prove that vegans can be world-class climbers even with their dietary restrictions. Unfortunately, the leader of her expedition announced this week that three climbers, including Strydom, had perished while on the mountain over the weekend. The following is a statement from...

According to ClickOnDetroit, convicted felon Ian Breiholz was questioned and arrested on May 10 after he was seen rummaging through a CVS dumpster in Chesterfield Township. Police say he has since been charged with concealing a stolen firearm, being a felon in possession of a...

Video: Using an iPhone as a Fishing Lure

Mon, 05/23/2016 - 08:25

It’s big, it’s flashy, and it’s expensive, but can the iPhone make the cut as a fishing lure? Of course, it is far from being ideal, but one angler decided to put his old, broken iPhone on the end of his line. “An iPhone can do pretty much anything, but can a broken one be used as a fishing lure and work?” asked Australian angler Brett Stanford of YouTube’s How Ridiculous. An iPhone may net you something at the Apple store, but in the ocean? Our guess is that there’s not a whole lot of Apple fans among fish. Believe it or not, it took Stanford less than 15 minutes to get...

Video: This Tiny Robot Packs a 9mm Glock

Fri, 05/20/2016 - 08:59

While lawmakers are still discussing the ramifications of drones carrying pistols, it seems that one company is exploring the potential of arming remote-controlled vehicles with Glocks. No, this is not a very late April Fool’s joke: An Israeli company by the name of General Robotics is actually developing a line of miniature robots armed with Glocks. It’s called the DOGO, and it is anything but a toy. “The DOGO Robot is a light robot, armed with a 9mm Glock pistol,” General Robotics stated on its website. “It is your...

Teen Angler Catches Florida Record Flathead on 14-pound-test Line

Fri, 05/20/2016 - 08:37

Officials from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) announced recently that a 13-year-old angler from Alabama caught the new state record for flathead catfish this week. Charles Patchen was with his mother and stepfather, Jeanette and Bryan Atwell, when he reeled in a massive 63.8-pound flathead catfish from the Chattahoochee River on May 15. The fish beat the previous record by almost 10 pounds. “I was so tired after reeling it in that I fell back into the boat to rest,” Patchen said....

Photo Tip: Use a Moose Shed to Improve Black Bear Trophy Pics

Thu, 05/19/2016 - 11:25

It’s a fact: After a successful hunt, some game animals are easier to photograph than others. A big whitetail buck? No problem. Simply kneel behind the deer (don’t ever sit on a harvested animal), roll the buck onto his belly with legs tucked underneath, grab an antler with the buck’s head held high, turn the head to show off the rack’s best attributes, and have a friend fire dozens of pics. A mature tom turkey? Again, easy. Kneel behind the bird, spread the wings slightly, open the tail fan and say “cheese.” A massive black bear? Not so easy. But several years ago an...

8 Excuse Busters: Watch and Share the Eddie Eagle Program

Tue, 05/17/2016 - 14:19

Have you watched the Eddie Eagle videos or storybooks online with kids or shared the program with other adults? Oh, it doesn’t apply to you? Here are eight excuse busters of why it DOES apply to all of us. Excuse #1 – I’ve already had a long talk with my kids about respecting firearms. While it’s great you’re talking to your kids, the Eddie Eagle program is memorable; it condenses a what-to-do scenario into a catchy phrase through songs and stories. A child can’t process a “long talk” within a split second, nor can they pass the “long talk” on to a...

Video: Rare Giant Albino Catfish Caught in Manitoba

Tue, 05/17/2016 - 09:55

If you love catching numbers of big fish, one destination that should be near the top of your bucket list is the Red River in southern Manitoba. Specifically, you should contact longtime guide Donovan Pearase from Blackwater Cats Outfitter. When it comes to finding and catching massive channel catfish, Donovan is one of the best. And while he’s seen just about everything on the Red River, on May 15, 2016, he couldn’t believe his eyes. “After almost 30 years of catfish guiding, I may have seen 15,000 to 20,000 cats, and not one that looked anything like this,” Pearase said....

Hero Dog Takes Rattlesnake Bites for 7-year-old

Tue, 05/17/2016 - 09:06

Dogs have a reputation for protecting their owners unflinchingly, and last week a two-year-old German shepherd lived up to that reputation by taking three bites from a rattlesnake while defending a seven-year-old girl. According to Donya DeLuca, her young daughter Molly and newly adopted dog, Haus, were playing in her backyard in Tampa, Florida last Wednesday when the two came across the deadly snake. “Molly and Haus were looking for his toys he likes to put outside, when a large rattlesnake appeared,” DeLuca wrote on her Read more »

Florida Woman Arrives in Hospital with Dead Shark Biting Her Arm

Tue, 05/17/2016 - 08:17

Sometimes it’s not about how big you are, but how determined you can be. Bites from nurse sharks are not usually cause for concern, but these small sharks have a notorious reputation for holding on tenaciously---even if dead. One Florida woman found that out the hard way after being bit in the arm on Sunday near Boca Raton. According to lifeguards at the scene, the woman was spotted swimming near a rock pile where the sharks have been known to congregate. Shortly afterwards, she was on a beach with a nurse shark firmly gripping her arm.
