Passively Constructed Negligent Discharge Story of the Day: FBI Agent Shoots Himself in a Philladelphia Courthouse

Mon, 08/29/2022 - 15:00

Ah yes. Another gun that somehow “went off.” As the local yokels who toil in Philly’s media milieu put it, FBI agent shot in leg when weapon accidentally discharges at Philadelphia courthouse. We’d title that story a little differently in the interest of accuracy. Something like, ‘FBI agent wounded after negligent discharge in Philly courthouse.’

Anyway, the feds’ finest continue to shower themselves in glory. As Philadelphia’s local ABC affiliate phrases it .

Remington Updates a Classic With the New Remington 700 Alpha 1 [VIDEO]

Mon, 08/29/2022 - 12:00

When you think of Remington, a few models come immediately to mind. Along with the 870 and 1100 shotguns, maybe the first gun you think of is the venerable Model 700 rifle. First made back in 1962, tens of millions of Model 700 bolt action rifles have been bought and used by hunters, target shooters, police and the military.

After the bankruptcy and dissolution of the old Remington, the first thing most gun owners wanted to see the new RemArms (the company now making Remington firearms) do is to turn out those very popular classics once again, making them with the build quality and tolerances generations of hunters and shooters had known and loved.

NY Legislators Want to Force Credit Card Companies to Track and Report Gun Purchases

Mon, 08/29/2022 - 08:00

Credit card companies track spending based on the type of retailer where a card is used — though they do not track the individual items that are purchased. Each purchase is tagged with what’s called a merchant category code, with the master list set by an international standards body. Some categories are fairly broad, such as those for grocery stores and airlines, while others are quite specific. There are unique codes for tent and awning shops, wig and toupee stores — even separate categories for antique shops, secondhand stores and pawn shops.

YouTube Training: Putting Good Data On Your ‘Mental Hard Drive’ Could Save Your Life

Sun, 08/28/2022 - 13:00

No matter how good you are on the range, it doesn’t replicate the conditions you’d face if someone was really trying to kill you. Adrenaline, faster heart rate, the complex environment of the real world, and the fact that the target isn’t made of paper, steel, or gel (and may be shooting back) all add up to reduced accuracy.

You can partially make up for this by practicing with a high heart rate (doing things like running with sandbags), or by using something non-lethal, but still painful to train against others, like Simunitions or some training simulators.

Constitutional Carry Should be the Rule, Not the Exception

Sun, 08/28/2022 - 10:00

Constitutional and permitless carry are divisive topics among not only the general population, but gun owners as well. Some feel that if we allow anyone to carry a gun without a permit, the nation will turn into a cliché version of the Wild West, with blood running in the streets.

Curiously, most detractors are left stuttering when questioned how permit requirements stop hardened criminals from breaking the law.

As of this writing, half of the states in the union have some form of permitless or constitutional carry, with the nation being no more bloody than it was before.

5 Short Training Videos Every New Gun Owner Should Watch

Sat, 08/27/2022 - 12:30

[ED: We ran this post back at the beginning of the pandemic, in the days when gun stores were jammed and lockdowns had just been ordered. There were lots of first-time gun owners who couldn’t get even basic training IRL. Over two years later, we now have millions of new gun owners who can, have and are getting out there. But we’re under no illusions that everyone has the inclination, time, or disposable income to train they way the should.

Mythbusting With Gunsite Academy

Sat, 08/27/2022 - 10:00

Earlier this year I had the opportunity to attend the 250 Pistol class at Gunsite Academy. Since attending, I’ve found there are a lot of people with strong opinions about Gunsite, but they have nearly zero correlation with the reality those of us who have actually trained there experienced. With this in mind, I thought it would be a good idea to dispel some common myths and misconceptions.

To help with this, I reached out to Freddie Blish and Ken Campbell.

California Man is Wounded While Shooting and Killing an Early Morning Home Invader

Fri, 08/26/2022 - 16:00

California legislators are working hard to double the tax on firearms and ammunition. When they couldn’t get the support they need (!) for the bill, they amended it to exclude long guns sold to anyone with a hunting license (read the bill here). Expect it to pass, resulting in fewer Californians able to afford the price of a gun, ammo, and the most effective means of armed self-defense.

One Californian who’s very happy he was able to afford a gat and some ammo is in a hospital recovering from a gunshot wound.

Shocking: AP/NORC Poll Doesn’t Really Say What the Media Think it Says About Gun Control

Fri, 08/26/2022 - 14:00

Media headlines heralded “Americans Want Stricter Gun Laws!” based on a recently released poll by the Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research at the University of Chicago. But a close reading of the data, including quotes from respondents within, demonstrate that’s not actually the case.

Swallowed Whole

The new survey by AP-NORC suggests U.S. adults want to see stronger gun laws. According to the poll, 71 percent of respondents prefer “stricter gun laws,” but it doesn’t go on to say what “stricter” means.

What I Carry and Why: The .327 Federal Magnum Ruger LCR

Fri, 08/26/2022 - 12:00

My first dedicated concealed handgun was a Smith & Wesson 642. The lightweight alloy frame and pocket-friendly footprint was a joy to carry. However, I sucked at shooting revolvers and the J-frame didn’t exactly beckon me to practice. So I ventured down a long and winding road, partially documented here. I have since returned to the revolver game with Ruger’s LCR, prompted in part by TTAG’s review of the .357 Magnum model.

Fast-forward a few years where we find a lot of slightly used holsters sitting in a footlocker and my EDC for the last four years is a Ruger LCR in .327 Federal Magnum (simply ‘.327’ from now on).

Panneton: The Catholic Rosary is a Must-Have Tacticool Accessory for Rad-Trad Violent Insurrectionists

Fri, 08/26/2022 - 08:00

Just as the AR-15 rifle has become a sacred object for Christian nationalists in general, the rosary has acquired a militaristic meaning for radical-traditional (or “rad trad”) Catholics. On this extremist fringe, rosary beads have been woven into a conspiratorial politics and absolutist gun culture. These armed radical traditionalists have taken up a spiritual notion that the rosary can be a weapon in the fight against evil and turned it into something dangerously literal.

BREAKING: District Court Strikes Down Texas’s Ban on Concealed Carry By Adults Under 21

Thu, 08/25/2022 - 16:11

This is a BIG win. And it may be the first (of many) post-Bruen gun control law to be struck down on the merits.

From the Firearms Policy Coalition . . .

Today, Firearms Policy Coalition (FPC) announced a victory in Andrews v. McCraw, its Second Amendment lawsuit that challenged a ban on handgun carry by young adults in the State of Texas. The judgment and injunction can be viewed at FPCLaw.org.

OMG! A Box of WWII Rifles Was Mistakenly Delivered to a High School! OMG!

Thu, 08/25/2022 - 14:00

Why doesn’t FedEx ever make these kinds of mistakes at TTAG Central Command? Or with someone we know. We promise not to press any panic buttons, bother the local cop shop, or lock down any educational facilities. Pinky swear.

“When deliveries come in, we check everything,” Kevin Thomas, Chester (PA) High School maintenance employee told NBC10. “Usually, it’s like school supplies. So I don’t think – in the history, nothing like this has ever happened.

The Magazine Vest From ‘Heat’ – McCauley Would Not Be Pleased

Thu, 08/25/2022 - 12:00

I just finished the book Heat 2, which to me, is a long-awaited deep dive into a group of characters I love. ‘Heat’ is often well regarded for its gunplay, but beyond good cinematic ballistics, it’s a great film with deep and flawed characters. In short, I’m a fan of director Michael Mann and a huge fan of ‘Heat.’

A year ago, the Youtube channel Forgotten Weapons posted a video called Forgotten Weapons Will Rock and Roll At the Drop of a Hat.

Oregon Homeowner Shoots a Home Invader After Being Forced to Make Him a Sandwich

Thu, 08/25/2022 - 10:00

Apparently breaking into residences and victimizing innocent people can work up an appetite in a fugitive on the run. Terry Lee Martz was feeling a might peckish on Saturday while carrying out a broad daylight home invasion at a residence in the eastern Oregon town Ontario.

Martz let himself into the home on Saturday around noon where a woman was reading in the living room and a man was outside in a shed.

ProPublica Horrified That a Lawful Business is Defending Itself in the Courts

Thu, 08/25/2022 - 08:00

After the 2021 ghost gun law passed in Nevada, Polymer80 hired the New York City law firm Greenspoon Marder to file the lawsuit in Yerington, an onion farming town that’s the seat of the county that’s home to Polymer80. One of the firm’s managing partners, James McGuire, traveled to Yerington to argue before Judge John Schlegelmilch that the law was written so vaguely it would be impossible to enforce and would be ripe for abuse.
