Taurus PT 24/7 Fires Without Pulling Trigger

Fri, 03/21/2014 - 10:03

Taurus is one of those manufacturers that people seem to either love or hate with very little room for middle ground (ok, they’re all pretty much that way). Having said that, whether you love Taurus or hate them, you might find this video interesting, especially if you own a Taurus PT 24/7.

This video is a longer version of the video circulated last year when nearly 100k Taurus 24/7 pistols were recalled for just this reason. I hadn’t seen this longer version prior to this morning, h/t to M3 Strategies for the find.

If you own a Taurus 24/7 I’d love to hear how it’s running for you.

Performance Walls

Wed, 03/19/2014 - 11:25

Aaron Cowan recently addressed what I feel is an interesting topic: performance walls, or barriers that prevent us from learning something new, and in the context of training.

At some point in our teaching career we instructors will give a student a bias or a performance roadblock.  Often we don’t even realize we are doing it.  Speaking for myself, we don’t for the most part do this on purpose; rather it is a byproduct of the traditional and sometimes dogmatic training we went through and in turn pass along. Perhaps it is because we have cherry picked our own personal best results.  Teaching is a difficult skill to master.  Some would say it’s more difficult to master than shooting, and I would agree.  Being able to relate to a student, to address their unique needs, areas of improvement and individual implicit skills requires an attention to detail that will vary from teacher to teacher.

If you’ve trained with more than one instructor (o

Executive Order 13660 Expanded

Mon, 03/17/2014 - 11:54

Today President Obama expanded Executive Order 13660 titled “Blocking Property of Additional Persons Contributing to the Situation in Ukraine,” and some of the language is interesting enough that I thought it worth passing along.

I don’t speak lawyer (if any of you do, please chime in), but Section 1 below sure makes it sound like small arms and ammunition coming from the Russian Federation (Russia) will now be blocked. This might be a situation where we have to wait and see how it’s implemented, I don’t know.

The full Executive Order is copied below, emphasis added. You can view the original EO here. Thanks to everyone who emailed me about this.

Threat Journal

Mon, 03/17/2014 - 10:16

I’ve been following Threat Journal on their various outlets for a couple years now, and I’ve been pretty impressed with their coverage. If you’re not familiar with Threat Journal, it’s a newsletter, website and podcast that covers only “the bad stuff” – terrorism, nuclear disasters, war, etc, and should definitely be on your radar if you like to know what’s going on in the world around you.

Here’s what Threat Journal is all about in their own words:

Threat Journal is a newsletter, website and podcast focusing on serious threats to the security of the U. S. and it’s citizens and interests at home and abroad.

TJ covers a variety of issues including war, terrorism, nuclear emergencies, border security, growing tensions with Iran, China, Russia, significant public health dangers such as epidemics, pandemics and more.

We sift through the bunk and hype to bring you precise news and analysis in a quick-read, executive summary format, clearly spelling out the details, how it impacts you, and where poss

Remington R51 Problems

Sun, 03/16/2014 - 17:29

My first impressions of the Remington R51 weren’t all that positive, but I was hoping that once the guns started shipping that they would magically turn out to be great. So far, it doesn’t look like that’s going to be the case.

Tim from Military Arms Channel put out the short video below where he goes over some problems he found with a R51 he found at the local gun shop. No bueno.

Texas Custom Guns on RECOILweb

Sat, 03/15/2014 - 10:19

It’s always good to see a friend doing well. My buddy Lonnie from Texas Custom Guns was featured last night on RECOILweb, where they showcased some of Lonnie’s builds.

Tonight’s gun porn comes to you courtesy of Texas Custom Guns, which operates out of Alvin, TX (just south of Houston). My friend and RECOILweb contributor Brad Walker turned me onto them when he showed me an Instagram picture of  TCG custom Saiga-12 (you can see that image below). TCG builds TCG-15s (their AR15) and other weapons (like the aforementioned Saiga 12).

You can read the rest here - well done Lonnie, keep up the good work!

BLACK Season 2

Fri, 03/14/2014 - 10:07

The KickStarter project has been launched for BLACK the Web Series Season 2. If you’re not familiar with BLACK, it’s an online only (YouTube) series from Writer/Director Frank T. Ziede.

For season 1 BLACK raised $10k from their Kickstarter project, and with a budget of only $10k, what they came up with was pretty impressive. Having said that, the nearly universal feedback from season 1 was that the episodes were too short, so to that end, BLACK is upping their game for season 2.

Join me in backing the season 2 Kickstarter project here, and check out videos and previews of what’s coming in season 2.

A Case for Backup Guns

Thu, 03/13/2014 - 17:06

I read an article today on Daily Caller about backup guns that I thought was interesting. The article starts off by describing an incident where a police officer was killed after sustaining a gunshot wound in his dominant arm:

A few days ago, Craig and I were discussing a recent incident in which a police officer was killed. The officer was shot in his dominant arm (right handed officer, shot in right arm).

Although conscious and trying to fight back, he was unable to reload his empty handgun with his non- dominant hand only, and was executed by his assailant.

Craig and I both felt that if this officer had been wearing a back-up gun (BUG), he might have been able to access it and continue the fight. Unfortunately, he did not have a second gun.

A few things stood out to me in the article, which is titled Concealed Carry: Are back-up guns for civilians a good idea?, the first being what I feel was the central point:

Rob Pincus for the NRA Board of Directors

Wed, 03/12/2014 - 13:09

Rob Pincus recently announced that he was running for the 76th Seat on the National Rifle Association’s Board of Directors. Since then, Rob has been asked to clarify his positions on several topics that matter to those of us who believe in the Right to Keep and Bear Arms. Here’s a brief analysis of where Rob stands on open carry, Constitutional carry, and mandatory gun training as it relates to a carry permit process.

Open Carry

There seems to be some confusion as to whether or not Rob supports open carry, and honestly, I cringe every time this topic comes up. Almost without exception, when open carry is discussed, if a person disagrees with guns being used as a political prop, a certain percentage of gun owners will jump to the unsupported and erroneous conclusion that the person must be against the legality of open carry (ask me how I know).

Rob’s position:

The fact is that I hav

Training Intent: People, Not Paper

Tue, 03/11/2014 - 11:06

In my experience, nothing changes the mood more on a range or in a conversation about training and practice than this simple truth; we are training to shoot people, not paper.

Now, I suppose there are different reasons for different people why this is a somewhat uncomfortable truth, and it certainly isn’t uncomfortable for everyone but it is something that isn’t discussed nearly enough in my opinion.  Since it isn’t discussed, it also isn’t expounded upon as a training guide; if we don’t humanize the training, then we fail to teach important aspects of the use of force against people.  Paper is a poor medium for training.  Not only does it rarely reflect real life in the three dimensional sense, but it also fails to demonstrate to the student, the citizen, officer or solider that they are indeed training to shoot people when/if it is called for.   This isn’t universal, there are instructors, agencies and units in the world who are humanizing their targets as much as possible, but they seem more the exception than what should be a stone carved rule.  Is this because we traditionally do

Stand With Connecticut

Mon, 03/10/2014 - 10:49

The situation in Connecticut has yet to be resolved as citizens there are still potentially facing confiscation of lawfully obtained firearms and magazines. Though most of us don’t live in CT, there is a sense of solidarity, of wanting to help, and today I’m going to tell you how you can get involved no matter where you live.

Connecticut Citizens Defense League

First off, you can join and support the Connecticut Citizens Defense League (CCDL). The CCDL is a “non-partisan, grassroots organization devoted to advocating rights affirmed by the Constitutions of the United States of America and the State of Connecticut.” And you don’t have to be a CT resident to join their growing ranks of over 12,000 members. According to the CCDL Mission Statement:

We welcome anyone who believes that the defense of our constitutional rights is critica

Facebook Announces New Standards for Guns

Wed, 03/05/2014 - 14:00

Last week we told you that Moms Demand Action For Gun Sense and Mayors Against Illegal Guns were pressuring Facebook’s legal team to ban gun sales on Facebook and Instagram, and today we have Facebook’s answer.

Summary: nothing really changes except age restrictions, unless you’re breaking the law.

Facebook Announcement

Facebook, at its heart, is about helping people connect and communicate. Because of the diversity of people and cultures on our services, we know that people sometimes post or share things that may be controversial or objectionable. We work hard to find a balance between enabling people to express themselves about topics that are important to them, and creating an environment that is safe and respectful.

This balance is important to how we view commercial activity on Facebook or Instagram. We have strict rules about how businesses can use our advertising tools. For example, we do not permit advertising for illegal drugs, tobacco products, prescription pharmaceuticals, weapons, and seve

Coye Knives Custom Ridgeback Winner

Tue, 03/04/2014 - 13:08

A little over two weeks ago we launched a fundraising giveaway to raise money for Paws and Stripes, a nonprofit organization that provides service dogs for wounded U.S. military veterans with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and traumatic brain injuries. Today I would like to announce the total raised, as well as the winner of the custom Ridgeback.

Total Raised and Winner

Thanks to everyone who participated, over $2,500 was donated directly to Paws and Stripes through this fundraiser. Thank you to everyone who donated! This morning, the folks at Paws and Stripes delivered a spreadsheet with the donations to my inbox, which I then fed into random.org.

What is the .0000672%, and how does it relate to concealed carry in Florida? Check out the video below to find out.

Be a smart business, don’t make yourself an easy target for crime. Don’t deny your customers the right to defend themselves. They’ll thank you for it.

Well said Dom.

Payton’s Project Totals and Winner

Mon, 03/03/2014 - 10:34

A couple weeks ago we teamed up with 2 Vets Arms and Coye Knives to help raise money for a little girl in Oklahoma who is fighting cancer, and today I would like to announce the winner of the fundraiser contest, as well as the total amount raised.

On Saturday, March 1, a Crossfit workout was held in Tahlequah, OK to benefit Payton and her family. At the event, Payton herself drew the contest winner from a box with all donors names (each $10 donated equaled one entry into the drawing).

Here are some photos from the event courtesy of the 2 Vets Arms Facebook and Instagram pages.
