Oklahoma Open Carry Bill Filed

Thu, 01/23/2014 - 16:44

Oklahoma State Sen. Nathan Dahm filed Senate Bill 1473, a bill that would allow citizens over the age of 18 to open carry loaded or unloaded guns without a license for hunting and target shooting. The bill is making headlines, not because it’s particularly unique, or that it significantly promotes gun rights, but because of its title: the Piers Morgan Constitutional Right to Keep and Bear Arms Without Infringement Act.

Bill Intro

An Act relating to firearms; creating the Piers Morgan Constitutional Right to Keep and Bear Arms Without Infringement Act; providing short title; amending 21 O.S. 2011, Section 289.6, as amended by Section 11, Chapter 259, O.S.L. 2012 (21 O.S. Supp. 2013, Section 1289.6), which relates to conditions under which firearms may be carried; adding condition; providing for noncodification; and providing an effective date.

G-Code HSP D3 Carrier System

Thu, 01/23/2014 - 09:13

An All-Encompassing Ammunition Accoutrement

The G-Code and Haley Strategic Partners (HSP) D3 Carrier System collaboration, at its core, is a group of highly modular ammunition carrying equipment capable of being transformed for multiple roles and environments and adapting to the end user’s requirements.

All the pieces of the kit can be interchanged with one another to suit the mission or training regime.

While the component configurations are quite diverse and can be moved and tweaked to the user’s liking, the system itself will be typically limited to [a

What’s Going on at Caracal?

Thu, 01/23/2014 - 08:47

Caracal had a bumpy ride in 2013. In March, Caracal issued a recall on a limited number of C model pistols, and then in September, Caracal issued a complete recall of the C model. No fixes, just a refund.

Caracal made some significant changes to the C and F pistols, both to address the safety issue and to make some enhancements based on consumer feedback, and they are to be reintroduced to the US market this year as the CP660 (full-size), CP661 (compact), and CP662 (sub-compact).

The question is whether or not these new models will be interesting enough to bring buyers back to the brand after so many problems. As we look at what firearms to test in 2014, I would appreciate your feedback as to whether Caracal should be on our list.

Below is a video from Caracal that features Wes Doss, Rob Pincus and David Bahde, who had th

Is Gun Ownership on the Decline?

Wed, 01/22/2014 - 10:59

Is gun ownership on decline in the United States? You’d be hard pressed to make that argument to someone who has been to a gun show lately, or to someone who waded through the swarm of red bags and milk crates at SHOT Show, or even to someone that has been shopping for .22 LR ammunition online.

I mean, .22 LR ammo has become so scarce that we’re approaching pro-liberty-Democrat levels of rare – we know there’s some out there, we just can’t find it. Is there a supply problem? Most definitely. But there’s also significant demand…

In the latest video from NRA News commentator Billy Johnson, he talks about the alleged decline of gun ownership. Is it real, and more importantly, does it matter?

Last spring, the New York Times published an article that touted a four-decade-long decline in gun ownership. This article is often used by gun control advocates to argue that reasonable gun control is being blocked by a small, but vocal minority. It’s based on data from the 2012 General Social Survey that shows gun ownership in the U.S. has declined

Indiana Police Chief Negligent Discharge

Wed, 01/22/2014 - 09:16

Connersville, Indiana Police Chief David Councellor made the news for all the wrong reasons last weekend when he negligently shot himself in the thigh reholstering his weapon. The really sad thing is that this isn’t the first negligent discharge Chief Councellor has had. The first time, he shot himself in the hand.

An Indiana police chief’s day ended with a bang when he accidentally shot himself in the leg on Saturday – the second time in his career that he’s turned his own gun on his body.

David Councellor is running to become Fayette County’s new sheriff, but he chose the wrong way to make headlines when he unintentionally discharged his 40-caliber Glock handgun while perusing other firearms at a local gun shop.

A 33-year veteran of the Connersville Police Department, Councellor had taken his Glock out to compare it to another gun in the store. When he tried putting the gun back into his holster, he found himself shooting his own thigh.

His careless reholstering methodology aside, unholstering a loaded weapon in public outside the context of needing to shoot someone is bad idea, generall

Beretta ARX100

Mon, 01/20/2014 - 15:08

For the past several SHOT Shows (at least) we’ve been hearing about the Beretta ARX100, Beretta’s multi-caliber semiautomatic rifle to compete with the FH SCAR and Bushmaster ACR. It sounds like the wait might be finally over.

Beretta brought the ARX100 to media day, and we waited in line to shoot it for about 20 minutes before finally giving up. There was a group of gentlemen in front of us from overseas and that were extremely enthusiastic about the rifle, and kept passing it back and forth amongst themselves, taking selfies, and making “pew pew pew” noises pretending to fire the rifle. 20 minutes was seriously all I could handle.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day

Mon, 01/20/2014 - 10:27

Martin Luther King Jr. was many things – a Christian leader, a civil rights activist, a humanitarian, a husband, a father, a Ph.D, and a proponent of nonviolent activism. Notice I didn’t say he was a pacifist.

Dr. King understood the need for self-defense as well as anyone, which I covered briefly about a year ago when I said that if you’re anti-gun, you’re racist:

Reverend Martin Luther King Jr., who, unlike the Black Panthers, was famous for nonviolent civil disobedience, also understood the need to protect himself. After his house was bombed in 1956, he applied for a permit to carry a concealed firearm. He was denied, but from that day on armed supporters guarded his home, a home which was described by Glenn Smiley as an “arsenal”.

Violence in an of itself is neither good nor evil, and I think Dr. King understood that. I think he understood that while nonviolence is preferred, sometimes nonviolence isn’t an option, and he

This Is Why We Can’t Take You Seriously

Sun, 01/19/2014 - 22:33

Anti-gun Democrats – this is why we can’t take you seriously.

Rabidly anti-gun CA State Senator Kevin de Leon (a Democrat from Los Angeles) made a real fool of himself at a press conference for his new gun control bill when he demonstrated both his command of the English language and the extent of his firearms knowledge.

I’m guessing this clown got his firearms education from the Feinstein-Biden School for Anti-Gun Window Lickers. The video below will explain.

Arsenal Strike One Pistol

Sat, 01/18/2014 - 23:07

We’ve been hearing about the Arsenal Strike One for a while now, and it sounds like they might actually be available to the US market in 2014. I for one am looking forward to it, especially when I hear claims like this:

We’re getting 3″ groups at 100 yards with this gun…

New CAMP-LORE Line from ESEE

Fri, 01/17/2014 - 17:21

The folks at ESEE have teamed up with Dave Canterbury to come out with a new brand called CAMP-LORE aimed at the bushcraft market to be released at BLADE Show. Jeff Randall from ESEE knives said:

We’re launching a new brand in 2014 under the CAMP-LORE name. Reuben came up with the name so his knife will be the first in this series. So, in 2014 be looking for scandi grinds, leather sheaths and all the other cool stuff found on bushcraft style knives.

From the video below, it sounds like the line will (at least initially) be uncoated, made from 1095 steel with a scandi grind, and be available in various lengths. As a fan of both ESEE and Dave Canterbury, I’m looking forward to seeing what they come up with.

Defending Our America Preview

Fri, 01/17/2014 - 16:25

At SHOT, I had the opportunity to attend a reception for the NRA Life of Duty, and during the event I saw a preview for a new series called “Defending Our America.” Based on the preview, I’m really looking forward to seeing how this turns out.

NRA Life of Duty’s newest program dissects three words: “Defending Our America.” We want to share what this phrase means — not to politicians or talking heads on the news — but to the people with their boots on the ground. No scripts; no prompts; no retakes; just eight men offering their raw opinions based on their shared service to America. Coming April 2014.

Lionheart Industries LH9 MKII

Fri, 01/17/2014 - 15:47

Monderno contributor Aaron Cowan spoke with Josh Whi from Lionheart Industries at SHOT Show about the LH9 MKII. Aaron will be running an LH9 pretty hard in the coming weeks/months, and I for one am interested to hear how it goes.

If you aren’t subscribed to Sage Dynamics on YouTube, you should probably fix that.

LBT / 2VA SHOT Show Giveaway

Fri, 01/17/2014 - 14:59

One of the best events I attended at SHOT was the London Bridge Trading / 2 Vets Arms bag launch giveaway. To celebrate the launch of the LBT/2VA Covert Pack, the two companies teamed up to sponsor a really awesome giveaway.

Three bags were given away in different colors/patterns, and the Grand Prize winner received a Covert Pack that came with a 2VA Bravo Rifle cerakoted gray to match the pack.

Glock 42 First Impressions

Fri, 01/17/2014 - 12:16

The most popular new gun at SHOT Show based on the lines at both range day and on the show floor was without question the Glock 42. Going into SHOT, I wasn’t too excited about the G42 because I felt like Glock chose the wrong caliber. After shooting the gun, my opinion has changed a bit.

Brandon shooting the Glock 42

The Glock 42 is of course a subcompact “pocket” pistol, but I was pleasantly surprised at how well it shot. The Glock booth was setup with steel plates at range day, and if I remember correctly, they were setup at 25 yards. I remember thinking that this was odd considering that the Glock 42 is such a tiny gun, and certainly wasn’t created primarily with such distances in mind. Turns out it didn’t matter.

The New Vertx EDC Bag Line

Fri, 01/17/2014 - 10:23

I had the chance to briefly check out some of the new Vertx EDC bag line at SHOT Show, and in short, the bags look great. Very well thought out, and from the outside, the bags don’t look “tactical” at all which I really appreciate.

The video below provides a pretty good overview of the bag line, and you can see additional photos and information over at Recoil Web.

Remington R51 First Impressions

Thu, 01/16/2014 - 10:17

Prior to SHOT, one of the guns I was looking forward to shooting was the Remington R51. Unfortunately, that didn’t happen.

Remington R51

Much to my surprise, Remington did not bring the R51 to Media Day at the Range. When I asked the folks working the Remington booth why they didn’t bring the R51 to range day, no one seemed to know. They all insisted that the gun was running just fine, but honestly I can’t think of any reason why a company that size wouldn’t bring their new pistol to range day unless it just wasn’t ready in time. But the gun is supposed to be on store shelves in February…strange.

EOTech X320

Thu, 01/16/2014 - 09:47

One of the new products this year at SHOT that I think is going to be a big winner is the EOTech X320 compact handheld thermal imager.

EOTech X320

The X320 is a compact handheld thermal imager with 320 x 240 resolution, 30 Hz frame refresh rate, white hot, black hot and 3 color modes for temperature identification. According to EOTech, the X320 is able to detect human heat signature up to 800 yards away and has a 2x, 3X and 4 X zoom. Possibly the best part is the price – the MSRP is $3,799, and should be available on the street for less.

I played around with the X320 a bit on the SHOW floor and thought it was a pretty nice little unit. If you want thermal capabilities but don’t need it weapon mountable, take a look at the X320.
