Gun Store Owner Charged for Carrying AR-15 at Texas Mall Before Heading to His Business

Tue, 01/07/2014 - 09:58

Though Texas is an open carry state, a gun store owner in the city of Beaumont is facing a misdemeanor charge of disturbing the peace for carrying his AR-15 rifle across his shoulder through a shopping mall.

Derek Poe, 26, owns Golden Triangle Tactical at the Beaumont Parkdale Mall. KBMT-TV reports that he entered the Game Stop store in the mall before going to his own store.

Video of the aftermath of the incident has surfaced showing Poe talking with authorities:

Federal Judge Deals Stinging Blow to Chicago Gun Ban

Tue, 01/07/2014 - 07:29

CHICAGO (TheBlaze/AP) — Gun restrictions in Chicago were dealt a stinging blow Monday when a federal judge ruled ordinances that ban the sale of guns within the city unconstitutional.

In a move that will invigorate Second Amendment enthusiasts, U.S. District Judge Edmond E. Chang said Monday that while the government has a duty to protect its citizens, it’s also obligated to protect constitutional rights, including the right to keep and bear arms for self-defense.

The decision, as the Chicago Tribune reported, is significant because, if it stands, it will find it unconstitutional to restrict licensed gun stories from operating inside the city.

Additionally, the ruling, pending it survives prospective appeals, would make it legal for people to transfer gun ownership through a private sale or as a gift to anyone who is 19 or older and has a firearm owner’s identification card.

Obama Administration’s Two Quiet New Executive Actions on Who Can Buy a Gun

Fri, 01/03/2014 - 13:56

After failing to strengthen background checks on gun buyers through Congress, the Obama administration on Friday announced pending executive action on the matter focused mainly on mental health issues that would allow the government to get around certain privacy laws on the books in order to obtain more information.

The new restrictions would take the form of regulations from the Department of Justice and the Department of Health and Human Services. One of the regulations would seek to gain information previously withheld because of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, or HIPPA, which protects medical privacy.

Colorado Learns That Recall Elections Aren’t the Only Consequence of Passing Gun Control Laws

Thu, 01/02/2014 - 14:00

Magpul Industries, one of the largest gun manufacturers in the United States, formally announced Thursday it is relocating its operations to Wyoming and Texas. The company is fleeing the state of Colorado following the passage of new gun control laws that “dramatically” limit the sale of firearms accessories.

The company is relocating manufacturing, distribution and shipping operations to Cheyenne, Wyo., and moving its corporate headquarters to Texas, according to a press released provided to TheBlaze. Magpul is still considering three North Central Texas sites, but the transition will begin immediately after a final decision is made.

“Magpul made the decision to relocate in March 2013 and has proceeded on an aggressive but deliberate path,” Doug Smith, Chi

Another Democratic Failure at Curbing Gun Violence: Mandatory Prison Terms for Illegal Firearms

Thu, 01/02/2014 - 10:20

Just when we were, as a nation, beginning to realize that putting people in prison for non-violent offenses, an Illinois state representative wants to revive Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s proposed legislation imposing mandatory minimum prison sentences for illegal firearm ownership. Mandatory minimum sentencing has been rightly identified as a human rights travesty and is being repealed across the nation.

If this passes, not only will it be one more failed attempt to prevent gun possession, but it will also represent Democratic willingness to totally ignore the lessons of drug prohibition and the devastation of mandatory minimum sentencing for a futile and authoritarian quest to regulate what people can and can’t own.

‘Looks Like Weimar Germany’: The Viral Photo Out of Connecticut That’s Giving Some Gun Owners Chills

A now-viral photo showing a long line of Connecticut residents waiting to register their guns and ammo is circulating across the Internet — and it’s sending chills down the backs of some gun owners.

Connecticut gun owners are rushing to register certain firearms and ammunition that will be considered illegal contraband in the new year.

A Gun-Related Registry You Will Probably Really Like

It’s not a response to Toby Keith’s Virginia restaurant’s gun ban, but a new national registry for Second Amendment-friendly businesses could not have arrived at a better time.

Bryan Crosswhite, who has businesses in Washington, D.C. and Virginia, expects the 2AO app to be up and running next month. That’s short for 2Amendment.org, where any business can register to get a decal on their front door to let their customers know they support the Second Amendment right to bear arms. Consumers will be able to use the app to locate businesses in the registry.

TheBlaze posted a story earlier this week about Connecticut gun owners waiting in line to get their firearms and high-capacity magazines registered before new state laws go into effect Jan. 1, 2014.

In the story some residents seemed upset by the requirement, which they called “unconstitutional”; others didn’t seem to mind.

Here’s what some readers of TheBlaze had to say about the issue:

Liberal College Town Welcomes Very Unlikely Neighbor (Hint: Think Guns)

Sun, 12/29/2013 - 14:07

Story by the Associated Press; curated by Oliver Darcy

GRINNELL, Iowa (AP) — An Iowa college known for liberal activism is welcoming an unlikely neighbor: one of the nation’s largest suppliers of high-capacity ammunition magazines and accessories for assault rifles and other guns.

With demand for gun products booming, Brownells Inc. is building a large distribution and retail center along Interstate 80 in Grinnell. The central Iowa city of 9,100 is home to Grinnell College, a selective liberal arts institution proud of its commitment to social justice.

Critics have attacked the company for profiting from accessories for military-style weapons, but the city and college are rolling out the welcome mat. It’s an example of how left-leaning politics and gun rights can coexist cheerfully, particularly when economic benefit enters the equation.

‘No Guns’: Patrons Stunned to See Restrictive Gun Sign at Pro-Firearm Country Music Star’s Restaurant

Fri, 12/27/2013 - 13:21

A sign on a restaurant door that reads “No Guns Permitted” isn’t likely to turn many heads at most restaurants.

But when the other, bigger sign heralding the name of the establishment reads “Toby Keith’s I Love This Bar & Grill,” you can bet a few feathers are getting ruffled.

And indeed that’s one of the biggest reactions since the country music star’s restaurant opened last week in Woodbridge, Va., a Washington, D.C. suburb about a half hour south of the nation’s capital.

The big sticking point is that gun-rights advocates note that Virginia law lets citizens enter restaurants and b

Connecticut Gun Owners Wait in Line to Do Something Many Gun Owners Hope They Never Have To

Connecticut residents waited in long lines on Thursday to register their firearms and high-capacity magazines before the state’s new gun laws go into effect on Jan. 1, 2014.

WFSB-TV reports that a “long-line of people” stood outside the Public Safety Building in Middletown, Conn., all day to register semi-automatic rifles and high-capacity magazines. Several residents were upset with the “unconstitutional” requirement, while at least one person didn’t appear to mind.
