If You’re a D.C. Gun Owner and Want Your Registration Renewed, Get Ready for Fingerprinting and a Fee

Thu, 11/21/2013 - 16:19

The nation’s capital is poised to enact an “absurd’ law, writes Emily Miller of the Washington Times — requiring legal gun owners to submit to a fingerprinting, photographs, and providing proof of address and a fee if they want their firearm registrations renewed.

The new law set to go into effect Jan. 1 affects all firearms registered before 2011; the Metropolitan Police Department filed proposed rules last week to enact the law, and citizens have until Dec. 15 to comment, Miller writes.

Dashcam Video Released of Vet’s Viral Arrest for ‘Rudely Displaying’ Rifle on Hike With Son – and It Reveals the Context Everyone’s Been Waiting For

Thu, 11/21/2013 - 14:53

Officials in Bell County, Texas, have released the dashcam footage of a police officer in Temple, Texas, disarming and arresting decorated veteran C.J. Grisham while he was on a hike with his son in March. The officer is seen grabbing the dad’s gun and then seemingly attempting to unlatch it from the man’s sling without telling him why or asking for permission.

Video recorded by Grisham and his son went viral earlier this year, but it did not show the moment the dad was approached and disarmed by the officer. He was later charged with “interference with duties of a public servant,” though the officer is heard in the video from March telling Grisham he was stopped for “rudely displaying” his rifle.

On Nov. 19, Grisham was found guilty by a jury of three men and three women of “interference with duties of a public servant” and ordered to pay a $2,000 fine. In an email to TheBlaze, the veteran said he plans to appeal the decision.

In the newly released dashcam video, officer Steven Ernis can be seen flagging down Grisham and asking him, “What are we doing?”

“We’re hiking,” Grisham replies.

Ernis, without warning, grabs Grisham’s AR-15 semi-automatic rifle and examines it.

Thugs Picked the Wrong Dad to Target for Shameful ‘Knockout Game’ — He’s a Concealed-Carry Permit Holder, and He Used It

Thu, 11/21/2013 - 13:31

TheBlaze has been covering the frightening uptick in the so-called “knockout game,” in which thugs randomly target people and punch the unsuspecting victims in public for kicks.

Well, it’s taken an interesting turn in Lansing, Mich.

There it’s reportedly called “Point-em-out, Knock-em-out,” according to WILX-TV in Lansing, and the station said one incident didn’t turn out so well…for the attacker.

Video: The truth about mental illness and guns

Wed, 11/20/2013 - 11:02

Via Reason.tv:

Even the nation’s premier gun lobby believes keeping guns away from the mentally ill is a good idea. It’s a sensible-sounding proposal, a logical precaution. But some forensic psychiatrists, whose jobs include the task of identifying potentially violent individuals, say that targeting the mentally ill isn’t as simple as it sounds.

A Recent Uptick in Concealed Carry Permits…in California?

Wed, 11/20/2013 - 09:12

Solano County, Calif., only saw 27 concealed carry permits issued in 2011, but that number is up to 254 for the year. The same uptick can be seen in Sacramento County too — 95 permits were issued in 2009, while 727 were issued this year.

More concealed carry permits have been issued in Bay Area counties after lawsuits were brought against local sheriffs and the discretion they use to decide whether to issue permits or not. (Photo credit: Shutterstock)

So what gives? Perhaps there has been an increase in applicants, but KPIX-TV reported lawsuits brought against local sheriffs‘ rejection authority might be having an impact.

In 2009, a jury found the sheriff in Solano County might have used an “informal policy” of “denying access…and/or discouraging applicants,&#82

President Pinocchio’s War of Distraction

Mon, 11/18/2013 - 07:00

Once upon a time, the Prince of Hope-N-Change stomped angrily around the White Castle. He jumped on the furniture, and kicked his golf bag so hard he snapped the shaft of his favorite putter.

Why was he so filled with rage?

Because, for the first time ever, he had been caught in his gollywhomper lies.

“Like your doctor? Keep your doctor. Period.”

“Like your health care plan? Keep your health care plan. Period.”

Being nailed as a “mis-spoken teller of incorrect truth” had caused the Prince of Hope-N-Change’s popularity and job approval ratings to plummet. Even his media lap dogs had turne

At least one of the intruders was armed with a handgun.

Following a struggle with one of the intruders, Carlson was able to grab his own gun and shoot the armed suspect, who was later pronounced dead at the scene, according to Pine County Sheriff Robin Cole. The dead suspect is identi

According to KTBC-TV, Grisham and other advocates were on the north side of the state’s Capitol building, while a veterans ceremony took place on the south side. The group has long been advocating for the right to openly carry handguns.

“I think the point should be made. What better day than today for us veterans to stick up for the rights we took an oath of office to protect,” A. J. Postell told KTBC.

Others disagreed.

Do You Own a Gun? New Study Says That Could Be Linked to Racism

Tue, 11/12/2013 - 10:07

A new study is making the connection between owning a gun and harboring racist attitudes in the U.S.

The study, “Racism, Gun Ownership and Gun Control: Biased Attitudes in U.S. Whites May Influence Policy Decisions,” published in the research journal PLOS ONE says “symbolic racism,” or “racial resentment,” correlates directly with American citizens who keep guns in their homes.

The study found that for every point on its “symbolic racism” measure, there was a 50 percent greater chance of respondents having a gun in the home. It also found that gun ownership is twice as high among white Americans as black Americans, and that whites are more likely to oppose gun control measures.
