The Ruger Precision Rimfire at the 2018 SHOT Show

Fri, 01/26/2018 - 20:44

One of the most interesting rimfire rifles I saw at the 2018 SHOT Show was the Ruger Precision Rimfire. While this bolt-action rifle shares some components with the company’s 10/22 rifle, it is not simply a redressed 10/22. The Precision Rimfire is built on a chassis system and is designed to work as an understudy training rifle for the centerfire Ruger Precision Rifle.

In this video, the designer of the Ruger Precision Rimfire discusses the thinking behind the gun, the engineering, and the feature set.

The latest version, the Mk IV, was introduced in 2016 and has proven to be as popular as its predecessors.

In the video a Ruger rep goes over the features of each model in the MK IV family including the most recent version which hearkens back to the company’s first pistol.

CMMG Guard 9mm at the 2018 SHOT Show Range Day

Tue, 01/23/2018 - 11:16

CMMG demonstrated their Guard firearm in 9mm at the 2018 SHOT Show Industry Day at the Range on Monday. The original version of the Guard, chambered in .45 ACP, debuted in 2017. The 9mm version is the logical follow up. The 9mm Guard feeds from Glock magazines and uses a radial delay blowback system to reduce felt recoil. The Guard uses many standard AR parts, such as the buffer and spring, for ease of maintenance.

In the video a CMMG rep goes over the design and features of CMMG 9mm Guard.

Watch: Making a Wood Stove From Old Wheels

Wed, 12/27/2017 - 08:45

I love free stuff, and I love making things myself instead of buying them. And this guy is very much the same. He often uses low-cost or free materials to build stuff, and in this video he whips up a wood-burning stove out of some old 20″ truck wheels and some scrap steel.

He uses parts from a barrel stove kit — and why not use a 55-gallon drum, as the kit was intended? Because steel drums are thin and burn through much more easily than these steel wheels.

Heck, he even added a flat area on top for cooking or heating up metal parts.

IWI Tavor 7 7.62x51mm Bullpup Prototype Rifle Range Video

Wed, 12/13/2017 - 19:40

The Tavor 7 in 7.62×51 is a brand new bullpup rifle from IWI (Israeli Weapons Industries) and it is shown here firing in full-auto in 3 round bursts. This particular rifle has done more than 10,000 rounds of torture test but it still runs like butter. It’s fully ambidextrous and can be converted from right- to left-hand using a small punch or the tip of a cartridge.

This is the first time the rifle has been shown being fired by someone outside of IWI.

The Tavor 7 will be available in the USA in 2018.

Watch: Filling Extra Holes in a Rifle Barrel (Plus Bluing)

Mon, 11/20/2017 - 11:20

This old rifle had been drilled & tapped for an old scope at some point, and the filler screws were unsightly. After a brief history lesson, Larry Potterfield shows how to professionally prepare and fill the holes. But it goes far beyond that, right through filing down the welds, restoring the old caliber stamping, and even prepping & bluing the entire barrel.

This shows what you can do with plenty of known-how, lots of time, and all the right equipment.

Pretty nice!

9/11: We Remember

Mon, 09/11/2017 - 18:01

On this day 16 years ago, our nation was attacked by cowards. In the wake of that terrible day, we banded together like never before and stood tall as we went to war with a shadowy enemy.

That war is still far from over, and in the process of waging it we’ve given up some things we shouldn’t have. But one day we’ll get back all we’ve lost, and more. Until then, though, we remember the fallen and fight on.

Watch: Quick DIY PVC Bow Without Heat or Power Tools

Fri, 08/11/2017 - 11:48

This video gets right down to it, showing us one way to make a good, useful bow using PVC, some fiberglass rods, and some paracord — without any heat or power tools.

It’s super simple, and clearly works well. He uses fiberglass “driveway markers” slipped into the 3/4″ PVC to give it more strength and spring.

He says its draw weight is about 35 pounds.

After about the halfway point, he starts to wander and there’s nothing else about this bow build… so it really is a quick little video. Check it out.

Idaho may allow bounty & baiting wolves for hunting,

Fri, 07/28/2017 - 18:36

The Idaho Department of Fish and Game has proposed putting bounties on problem wolves and allowing hunters to lure wolves with bait.

This comes from the state’s Wolf Depredation Control Board, as it addresses increasing problems with wolves killing livestock and big game.

“The use of sportsmen who pay for the opportunity to hunt or trap is traditionally our best method of managing wildlife populations,” Idaho Fish and Game Director Virgil Morris said.

Idaho Wildlife Services killed 75 wolves in 2015. There were 35 cattle and 125 sheep killings that year.

Hunters collected 139 wolves in 2016. Trappers got another 131. Bear hunters who use bait are allowed to shoot wolves if they also hold a wolf license.

Giant Tripletail Caught In Georgia, Setting New State Woman’s Record

Tue, 06/20/2017 - 00:22

In the saltwater fishing world, the strange but fun to catch tripletail is a coveted catch, and a new Georgia state record for the species has just been set in the woman’s division with a massive 29-pound, 6-ounce giant.

Caught by Jordan Davis of Brunswick on June 3, 2017, the fish was caught in St. Andrews Sound aboard the Sea Quest with Capt. John Davis at the helm.

Davis’ tripletail surpassed the 22-pound, 7-ounce fish for the Georgia woman’s record, held since 1994 by Joan Thigpen.

Tripletail offer light-tackle anglers exciting sight fishing in clear, reasonably shallow water just offshore Georgia beaches. They fight hard, and are delicious table fare.
