How to Weld Using Car Batteries & Jumper Cables (Video)

Tue, 12/22/2015 - 10:58

Anyone who spends much time in the great outdoors knows that it pays to be prepared, because things break – and there are no repair shops where we like to go.

Clearly, being prepared can only go so far – I mean, carrying a generator and a welder along isn’t something most off-roaders can do. But by adding a few welding rods, some gloves, and a welding hood or mask to your usual equipment, you just might be able to weld together a broken vehicle well enough to get it back to the pavement.

This fellow shows you how to use some 12 volt batteries, some wire, and a pair of jumper cables to weld steel. Pretty good info, if you ask me.

Amazing Video – Building a Tiled Roof Hut Using Only Primitive Tools and Materials

This video is excellent and his skills are on point. My favorite part was of him placing the tile on the roof. I wish I had these skills.

Review: Ruger SR-762

Mon, 12/21/2015 - 18:30

There appears to be a never-ending supply of new and improved AR-15 style rifles coming on the market these days. Just when you think the market has dried-up for ARs, another dozen or two new models pop up, as well as new manufacturers. My understanding is that most of the hottest new rifles at the last SHOT Show were almost all on the AR-15 pattern. My local gun shop believed mistakenly for a while that the AR market was flooded in our area. Not even close — there was a very slight slowdown but the market has risen once again. Not too many years back my local gun shop didn’t even stock any type of AR-15 style rifle — now they have a hard time keeping them in-stock.

How To Choose Duck, Goose Blind Locations

Mon, 12/21/2015 - 18:02

Decoys and blinds must be arranged according to wind direction and available natural cover.  But hunters who have the opportunity to set up blinds so decoying ducks are not looking directly at hunters as they set their wings, are wise to do so.

If possible, build a blind so birds drop into decoys from the left or right side of the hide, rather than coming directly into the front of a blind.  Ducks that decoy directly into the face of hunters are more likely to see a hunter’s face or a dog move, or someone’s shotgun, than ducks that are looking at decoys and flying within range to the side of a blind.

Primos Bubblin’ Crude Attractant

Mon, 12/21/2015 - 18:02

New on the market this deer season is something new. Deer attractants have been around for a long time. The products attempt to entice a deer’s smell into the curiosity mode or just plain ole “come check me out.” These often come in the form of liquids or powders poured out on the ground in deer rich habitats. Now comes a different approach.

One to Watch: Spyderco Ray Mears WolfSpyder

Mon, 12/21/2015 - 18:02

Spyderco’s 2016 catalog was released and we got our normal treats–classics with bleeding edge steels (hello Dragonfly II in HAP40), weirdo knives that no other production company would dare make (the Janisong or the Introvert, for example).  But leafing through the digital pages, one knife stood out–the Ray Mears WolfSpyder.  There are very few purpose built bushcraft folders (the Koster I covered here is still not released to my knowledge), and none made in collaboration with Ray Mears himself.

Sheriff Who Opposed Carry Expansion Shoots Self

Mon, 12/21/2015 - 10:37

Des Moines County, Iowa – When a sheriff shoots himself in the hand “while cleaning his gun,” you have to wonder. You know, things like, “How did he get that job? Why was he ‘cleaning’ a loaded firearm? Is his failure to safely handle firearms the reason he doesn’t trust others to carry guns?”

Woman Uses Gun to end Assault

Thu, 12/17/2015 - 19:30

Chattanooga, TN – In yet another case of legitimate self-defense with a firearm, we find this report.

A woman reported that she had been kicked, hit, and strangled by her “baby daddy.” The police department’s release “said the female showed visible signs of an assault.”

In fear for her life, she laid hold of a firearm and shot her assailant.

Sadly (in my opinion), she hit him in the arm and he was able to drive himself to the hospital. Less sadly, he was arrested by police while he was at the hospital.

Thank goodness she was able to use a gun to save herself from his abuse.

A Prepper’s Christmas Wish List

Thu, 12/17/2015 - 16:17

Wow, this is such an easy assignment, the tough part is narrowing down the choices and not busting the Yule Tide budget. First, and always, keep your eyes and ears open around the house, out in the yard, hunting camp, shooting range, bug out practice sessions and elsewhere. Eventually being nosy will yield plenty of ideas for Christmas presents for preppers.
