US Appeals Court Blocks Bump Stock Ban

Sat, 01/07/2023 - 12:35

A Trump administration ban on bump stocks — devices that enable a shooter to rapidly fire multiple rounds from semi-automatic weapons after an initial trigger pull — was struck down Friday by a federal appeals court in New Orleans.

The ban was instituted after a gunman perched in a high-rise hotel using bump stock-equipped weapons massacred dozens of people in Las Vegas in 2017. Gun rights advocates have challenged it in multiple courts. The 13-3 ruling at the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of appeals is the latest on the issue, which is likely to be decided at the Supreme Court.

NY Supreme Court: Red Flag Law Unconstitutional

Fri, 01/06/2023 - 12:30

The New York law that enables the confiscation of guns from people who haven’t committed a crime is unconstitutional, a state Supreme Court judge has ruled.

This red flag law, or the Extreme Risk Protection Order law, lets individuals—including police officers—petition a court to allow the seizure of firearms from a person they believe poses a threat to themselves or others.

If a judge agrees, the judge can direct law enforcement to take guns from the person in question.

The law, which took effect in 2019, has led to the issuance of more than 1,900 removal orders.

However, the law is in violation of the U.S. Constitution’s Second and 14th amendments because it doesn’t “sufficiently protect a citizen’s rights,” state Supreme Court Judge Thomas Moran said in a ruling in late December 2022.

Half of the states in the U.S. no longer require residents to hold a concealed carry permit to carry firearms in public after Alabama, Indiana, Georgia and Ohio passed laws in 2022 removing permit requirements.

On Monday, Alabama began enforcing its permitless carry law, becoming the 25th state to do so, while Indiana, Georgia and Ohio also passed laws this year allowing residents to concealed carry firearms without a permit. Over the last two years 10 states have moved to permitless carry, including Utah, Montana, Iowa, Tennessee, Arkansas and Texas.

“Unlike states who are doing everything in their power to make it harder for law-abiding citizens, Alabama is reaffirming our commitment to defending our Second Amendment rights,” Republican Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey said in a statement after signing the bill into law. “I have always stood up for the rights of law-abiding gun owners, and I am proud to do that again today.”

SKS vs AK-47

Fri, 12/16/2022 - 08:13

Russia convened a technical committee consisting of some of its foremost firearm experts in 1943. This was not long after a costly victory in the Battle of Stalingrad that claimed the lives of nearly half a million Russians. Their mission was to identify or create a cartridge capable of running in carbines, light machine guns, and select-fire rifles while delivering fight-stopping performance.

The ammunition commonality would eliminate some supply chain headaches encountered during the five-month engagement. More importantly, it would allow the Red Army to finally phase out the standard-issue bolt-action Mosin Nagants so painfully outperformed by many Axis small arms.

In late 1943, after conducting tests on various cartridge candidates, the Soviet military officially adopted the 7.62×39 mm and the M43. With Leningrad gripped in what would become a 900-day siege, shifting production when World War II raged in their backyard was not an option. However, work to create the first carbine capable of digesting the bottlenecked ammunition did slowly begin.

Which would you pick as the winner in this competition?

The Centers for Disease Control and

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) quietly removed a range of gun statistics from its website after gun control advocates complained that the statistics made gun control laws harder to pass, according to emails between CDC officials and gun control activists.

Over a three-month period, gun control advocates met with CDC officials about its estimate of defensive gun uses per year, which ranged from 60,000 to 2.5 million based on a review of various studies, according to the emails. The advocates argued that the 2.5 million statistic, found in a study by criminologist Gary Kleck, was misleading, incorrect and made it harder to pass gun control laws, spurring the CDC’s decision to remove the statistics from its website.

Lame Duck Assault Weapon Ban Unlikely

Mon, 11/28/2022 - 13:06

Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.), a top gun-control advocate, dismissed on Sunday the possibility that lawmakers will pass new gun-control legislation before Republicans take control of the House in January.

Speaking on CNN’s “State of the Union,” Murphy admitted an assault weapons ban passed by the House is unlikely to pass the Senate.

“I’m glad that President Biden is going to be pushing us to take a vote on an assault weapons ban. The House has already passed it. It’s sitting in front of the Senate,” Murphy began.

Ukrainian Sniper Makes 2nd Longest Combat Kill

Wed, 11/16/2022 - 12:58

Ukraine has claimed one if its snipers shot a Russian soldier from 1.7 miles away in what could be the second longest combat kill ever recorded.

Footage allegedly shows the moment the soldier drops to the ground after the sharpshooter takes a shot from a distance of 8,891ft.

It’s like shooting someone on Westminster Bridge from the top of Battersea Power Station – the length of 26 Wembley football pitches.

Ukraine’s Armed Forces said: ‘The occupier was eliminated by a precise shot of our special forces from a distance of 2,710 metres (8,891ft) – a distance that now ranks second in the world ranking, confirmed by the command of the Armed Forces.’

November 14, 2013

Sean,

So many things I would have liked to share with you… The simple pleasure of warm sunlight on your face. The color of the sky on a cloudless, moonless night. The smell of a freshly caught fish. The intensity of what truly great music sounds like. Subtleties involved in humor.

But we will never have those — or the millions of other — opportunities.

Goodbye son. Show me around and tell me what it’s like when I get there.

Love,
Dad

Specific Gun Purchases To Be ‘Delayed’ Starting November 14, 2022

Tue, 11/08/2022 - 14:43

The FBI posted a notice on its National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS), notifying gun dealers to expect delays in background checks for purchasers under the age of 21, starting on Nov. 14.

Bearing Arms first reported on the upcoming NICS processing delays, after a federal firearms license (FFL) dealer contact shared with the publication a letter sent by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF). The ATF letter let the FFL dealer know that it has been revising it’s process for gun purchasers between the age of 18 and 20 since the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act (BSCA) of 2022 passed in June.

Trigger Control = Gun Control

Wed, 11/02/2022 - 09:17

I’ve come to realize that trigger control is not well understood by many. In an article on a gun forum, for example, the author stated that trigger control was not at all important. According to the author, police gunfights occur at such close ranges that worrying about trigger control is unnecessary.
