Gun Free Republican Convention in Indiana

Tue, 05/20/2014 - 19:30

Republicans in Indiana have passed a lot of pro-gun laws, but sadly, their convention is likely to be gun-free (unless a criminal shows up).

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – Three months after touting their success at passing a law to allow guns in cars in school parking lots, Indiana Republicans won’t be able to carry firearms into the main venues at the party’s state convention next month because of policies at those sites.

“Oh my gosh. That’s ironical,” state Sen. Jim Banks, R-Columbia City, told The Journal Gazette. “It could be a problem for some people but I haven’t heard a lot of angst. Some will be up in arms about it.”

The convention is being held June 6-7 in Fort Wayne, the first time it’s been held outside Indianapolis. Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee and Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus are headlining the convention. Events will be held at the Parkview Field baseball stadium, the downtown Embassy Theatre will feature a concert by Kenny Loggins and the party convention will be at the Grand Wayne Center.

Allen County Republican Party Chairman Steve Shine said all three venues have policies against firearms and he doesn’t expect them to change for the convention. He said he hasn&...

Somewhat Pro-Gun Ad from General Tire

Tue, 05/20/2014 - 14:31

Not everyone who advertises on a gun magazine is pro-gun, you might see an ad from Jeep while forgetting their anti-hunting commercial. So it’s remarkable to see GT featuring a man with a gun on the advertising they published on Combat Handguns. However, if they really wanted to be pro-gun why not show a regular Joe with a gun? Of course, I salute Grady Powell for his service in the Green Berets, and if GT wants to honor him I’m OK with that. I’m just saying that in future ads, I’d like to see regular guys with guns.

Make high-school gun education mandatory?

Mon, 05/19/2014 - 23:01

Here’s an interesting letter to the editor

A letter writer on Thursday said, “I’m not against the Second Amendment, but” … an all too familiar refrain we hear coming from readers, politicians, media and even this newspaper’s editorial board (“Keep the incompetents from owning weapons,” Opinions).

This reader says we need some “control” over the issue, singling out legitimate risks to police and the public.

So, let’s get with it already. No high-school diploma should be issued without one credit in gun safety and marksmanship.

Half of all homes (probably more in this gun-friendly state) have guns — an immediately deadly constitutionally protected tool. Protect our children. Protect our law-enforcement officers. Protect the public. Eliminate dangerous “zero-tolerance policies” that keep children ignorant and helpless.

Instead, teach them.

You want a zero-tolerance policy? Summarily dismiss teachers who insist on gun ignorance in the classroom.

Arizona’s Court of Appeals recently overturned Phoenix’s censorship of this message at public bus stops. Be smart and follow through with students, teach real gun safety — not hoplophobic gun avoidance...

The Jersey City Shakedown: Mayor Fullop Pressures Gun Makers

Tue, 05/13/2014 - 16:11

Move over, Tony Soprano,

Jersey City Mayor Steve Fulop thinks the city’s new push for more data from gun companies that supply weapons to the police department will help “shape the dialogue” nationwide on gun safety, according to today’s Wall Street Journal.

The city initiative, which Fulop devised last year, seeks information from the gun manufacturers such as how they dispose of old weapons and whether they make assault weapons available for sale to civilians. Gun-rights groups have protested, calling the plan political.

Fulop, who advocates for stricter gun-control measures, told the Wall Street Journal the city can change the firearms industry.

“It shows municipalities and police departments have the ability to shape the dialogue,” he said.

Last month, an appellate court ruled the city veered outside of its authority by seeking too much information on its gun permit applications. Fulop has said the city plans to appeal that ruling.

Identification Marketing Example: Ambush Firearms

Tue, 05/13/2014 - 14:48

There are two schools of marketing, Aspirational, Identification. The first one is exemplified by Abercrombie & Finch, Calvin Klein, and even non-fashion brands that use really good looking people.

Identification marketing is different, just like Dove used real-looking women in their “Campaign for Real Beauty,” Ambush is using actors that look like everyday people. Will it work? I don’t see why not. After all, there are many ways you can sell a gun.

Smart Gun Safe from Hornady

Tue, 05/13/2014 - 14:28

Hornady makes a lot of interesting stuff, but I’m not sure how I feel about the “smart” gun safe. Do I want to be wearing a bracelet or using a card to open the safe? I personally don’t. I always carry key-chain, so keys or fingerprint-recognition technology is up my alley.

Either way, I won’t be calling for a boycott, unlike smart gun manufacturers, Hornady has no politicians advocating for them or passing laws trying to make their products the only ones available (hello New Jersey, Washington Post, etc).

Gun for “adventure travelers”

Sat, 05/10/2014 - 18:27

The copy of the ad under the headline is quite interesting “Maxpedition gear is trusted & preferred by tactical officers, military operators & adventure travelers around the world.”

Who are these “adventure travelers”? Soldiers of fortune? Mercenaries? Bodyguards for VIP’s? I can’t imagine the paperwork required just to go overseas with that gun.
