Video: Angler Catches Kayak-Sized Gator Gar

Mon, 09/12/2016 - 11:40

Kayak fishing is all the rage right now. It's a really fun way to get on the lake and fish in a way you haven't done before. However, I don't think this is typically what kayak fishers expect to find when they pull up their line to see what's on the other end of it. This might be the last time this guy fishes from his kayak, as he pulls up his line to reveal an alligator gar that's easily much bigger than his kayak.

Carson Wentz was Goose Hunting When He Found Out He Would be Starting QB

Wed, 09/07/2016 - 16:59

You got to like a guy who, while receiving possibly the biggest news of his life, was lying in the middle of a cornfield goose hunting. Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Carson Wentz found out that instead of sitting on the bench for the season, he was going to be given the keys to the offense, and be the team’s starting signal caller THIS season. The Eagles traded their previous starting quarterback, Sam Bradford, to the Minnesota Vikings just before week 1 of the 2016 NFL season, which has paved the way to starter town for Mr. Carson Wentz. It seems like everyone always wants to...

Goose Hunters Find Thousand-year-old Viking Surprise in a Field

Wed, 09/07/2016 - 13:17

A group of men were goose hunting in Iceland when they stumbled upon a pretty awesome find. Apparently, the five men didn’t shoot any birds, but made up for it by finding a huge Viking sword. One of the men took the finding to his Facebook page and then swiftly received a call from the Iceland Cultural Heritage Agency, which then took possession of the artifact.

According to BBC News, the agency’s director, Kris Huld Sigurdardottir, says only 20 swords of this age have been found in Iceland before this...

Video: Bear Uses Balcony as Personal Gym

Wed, 09/07/2016 - 09:10

A homeowner in Colorado looked out his window this morning and spotted a bear using his deck to get in his morning “pump.” The video he captured shows the bear hanging from his second floor balcony and doing a pull-up Rocky Balboa style; all that’s missing is the grey sweatshirt. The bear latches onto the deck using its jaws to pull itself up, which is a pretty impressive display of athleticism! Somehow, these bears just keep finding themselves in peculiar situations, locked in cars, Read more »

Review: DSD Posturing Buck Decoy

Fri, 09/02/2016 - 08:30

If you’re like me, you love bowhunting whitetails. And in my opinion, there’s no method that is more effective – and more fun – than decoying. While decoying can work during any part of the deer season, the absolute best time is the rut, when mature bucks are searching for hot does. Sure, you can use a doe decoy and have some success, but nothing comes close to placing an antlered decoy in open view of a traveling mature buck. When he spots the fake buck, he assumes a doe-in-heat is nearby, and he’ll walk – or trot – over to investigate. And here’s where it gets really...

Video: Tim Wells Spears Big Bear from Above

Thu, 09/01/2016 - 15:25

Spear hunting has been around since the dawn of mankind. Recently it has earned a bad rap because some people view it as shocking and possibly unethical. This video is similar to another black bear hunt we’ve seen using a spear with a GoPro attached, except this one is filmed from above. Hunter Tim Wells is perched up about 12 feet in a tree as a bear walks in to his bait pile, which is only feet from his ladder stand. The bear is very nervous, and Tim takes this to mean that...

Just in Time for Hunting Season, Blue Bell Reveals New Camo Ice Cream

Thu, 09/01/2016 - 14:00

If you’re heading to the grocery store at any point this weekend, take a stroll down the ice cream aisle. (As if you hadn’t already planned on it, am I right?) If you’re on the hunt for ice cream, but sick of the same old flavors – vanilla, chocolate chip, etc.  – then Blue Bell’s new Camo ‘n Cream is what you’re looking for. It won’t be easy though, as the name speaks for itself and it’s found in a camouflage container. The brilliant new ice cream combo swirls together milk chocolate with pistachio almond...

A Float Trip with Mom

When I was a boy, my dad took me on my first canoeing and camping trip on the St. Croix River. Our adventure ignited my love for fishing and exploration. My imagination ran wild as we paddled the mysterious backwaters into the woods; it seemed an alligator was as likely as anything to snatch my trusty Read more »

Review: Browning Buck 2500RT Day Pack

Wed, 08/31/2016 - 15:15

I know we have all lugged loads of stuff into the hunting woods – perhaps more than we need at times. Having a good, organized way to access the essential items while in my treestand has become very important to me over the years, and I’ve found this organization in my new Browning pack. There are two main pockets on the 2,500-cubic-inch Read more »

Camping with Your Canine

Fri, 08/26/2016 - 08:33

Going camping with your four-legged friend can be an immensely enjoyable experience – if your pet is suited to such adventures, that is, and you’ve done your homework. The first thing to consider is whether the pup will be a good campmate. If your dog is easily excitable, aggressive, prone to barking, a wanderer, or high-maintenance in any way, it might be better for the dog – and you – to drop him or her off at the doggy spa on your way to the campground. Don’t despair, however, if your buddy exhibits some of these traits because unwanted behavior is often the result of...

Video: Hooked Mako Shark Jumps more than 10 Feet Out of the Water

Wed, 08/24/2016 - 10:17

It’s a cool sight to see a bass break the surface after you hook it. Now imagine a 500-pound mako shark taking flight!

This mako was out to prove just how tough it was after being hooked by a San Diego fisherman. The mako shark is the fastest shark in the ocean, capable of reaching speeds of up to 60 mph. In this video, it looks like it’s competing for the high jump, too.

This toothy torpedo shoots out of the water more than 10 feet in the air, almost showing off for the fishermen, and then breeches right next to the boat. Now that’s adrenaline you can’t find...

Video: Targeting Monster Carp from Shore

Wed, 08/24/2016 - 08:32

The big, bad carp. Big as in “wow” and bad as in “controversial,” the common carp is a love or hate species. But at the end of the day, this outcast fish has gained enormous popularity from dedicated carp anglers, and those simply looking for a supersized tug. Visit the popular lake tributaries throughout Manitoba’s southern regions and you can get into some of these freakishly strong fish that Aaron Wiebe (below) calls "big, beautiful blobs." Hooking into giant carp is an exhilarating adventure that will commonly exceed every predetermined expectation. An immediate explosion of...

Review: LifeProof Smartphone Cases

Tue, 08/23/2016 - 14:47

Smartphones are such an integral part of life that anglers, hunters, hikers and campers take them everywhere, and that includes canoe trips to a secret bass lake and long hikes to a can’t-miss deer stand. My wife (that’s her shooting pics above) and I recently bought new smartphones – iPhone SEs to be exact – and because both of us are diehard hunters and anglers, our first priority was protecting our new investments. We rely on our phones to capture great outdoor photos and videos, as well as help navigate on new hunting property, check the weather forecast, and many other...

Video: Orca Launches Sea Turtle 30 Feet in the Air

Tue, 08/23/2016 - 14:07

Lead guide aboard M/Y Evolution, Rafael Pesantes, spotted an orca pod and quickly set off with the passengers to follow the developing scene. What transpired caught everyone off-guard, but they were able to get a laugh out of it. The video, captured by Phil Courter on May 29 just off the Galapagos Islands, shows a pod of killer whales turning a green sea turtle into a Frisbee. As passengers watched nearby, suddenly one of the orcas blasts out of the water and launches a sea turtle nearly 30 feet in the air. Though transient, orca pods are not uncommon in the Galapagos, and are seen...

10-Foot Snakeskin Found Along Maine Riverbank

Tue, 08/23/2016 - 13:26

Authorities in Westbrook, Maine, have warned the public about snakes after a large snakeskin was found near the Presumpscot River. Westbrook police said they have been searching for a 10-foot snake since June after a woman reported seeing it near a playground, a very scary place to see a snake that big. The snakeskin was found near Riverban Park at around 3 p.m., Police Chief Janine Roberts said, and they are still trying to determine the type of snake responsible for the shed snakeskin. The big snake was said to be “the length of a truck with a head the size of a soccer ball.”...

They call themselves the Cajun Navy, the Coonass Navy or the Brotherhood Soul Patrol. Whatever you call them, they are an armada of volunteers who set sail in the early morning hours from the parking lot of The Home Depot store on Coursey Boulevard in Baton Rouge to rescue neighbors, friends and strangers trapped by Louisiana floodwaters.
