Just taking the Deagle out on a tractor drive-by (VIDEO)

Fri, 03/24/2017 - 01:53

Stepping up from the bicycle-Uzi drive-by, Hickok45 tapped his Desert Eagle .50AE to accompany him on a ride across the ponderosa via John Deere.

Proving he can shoot on the move just as well as he can on the range, Hick even puts in a tactical reload while underway and doesn’t fail to deliver on the two-liters.

A sit down with a Navy overstamp Thompson submachine gun (VIDEO)

Tue, 03/21/2017 - 02:33

The good folks down at the VSO Gun Channel were able to evaluate a classic select-fire Chicago Typewriter dating to the Prohibition era.

Thanks to Steve, a recently retired Navy Veteran and Tommy gun expert/collector, they got to spend quality time with an M1921 Colt Thompson– the classic first model changed in 1928 to meet Navy specs– and got both a history lesson and some trigger time.

See if you can tell the difference between the 1921 and 1928 rate of fire and check out how much of a nightmare the drum mag was.

Indiana lawmakers want staff to carry guns in Statehouse

Thu, 03/16/2017 - 11:21

An Indiana House committee has expressed support for a bill that would authorize employees to carry guns inside the Indiana Statehouse.

Many lawmakers spoke favorably of Senate Bill 43 at a committee hearing on Wednesday, the Associated Press reports.

The legislation would apply to employees of the Indiana House, Senate, and Legislative Services Agency. All those who carry firearms in the Statehouse would have to possess valid handgun permits.

Sen. Jim Tomes, the bill’s sponsor, said lawmakers and their staff should have the means to protect themselves when working nights, as armed police are not there at late hours.

Opposing Democrats expressed concerns that the measure could cause trouble if people leave guns unattended in the Statehouse.

The bill is expected to be voted on next week.

A simple vacuum cannon can turn watermelon to slush in no time (VIDEO)

Thu, 03/16/2017 - 03:38

Often used in high school science experiments back in the day, this large scale vacuum cannon spits out 3-inch PVC end caps powered by atmospheric pressure only.

YouTuber Nighthawkinlight upsized his cannon using a length of 4-inch PVC pipe, painted and equipped with brass fittings for a vacuum line then mounted the whole thing on a simple wooden stand. Once the vacuum is built up and an aluminum foil “burst disk” seal is knocked out on one end, the other disk pops out explosively as the atmosphere fills the tube– dragging any projectile along for the ride.

“Watermelons turned out to be a very satisfying target,” he notes.

Serbu .50 cal vs 50 lbs of weight plates (VIDEO)

Thu, 03/16/2017 - 02:34

Edwin Sarkissian brings the gun show to the desert with a break-action RN50 stacked against a pair of 25-pound Gold’s Gym plates.

After teasing with some 9mm play (feel free to skip to the 2:30 mark, you know that crap isn’t going to penetrate) Edwin switches to the BMG to feel the burn.

Speaking of feeling the burn, don’t pick up a spent 671-grain bullet that has just been fired.

Glocking around with some Legoman heads (VIDEO)

Thu, 03/16/2017 - 02:14

Taofledermaus took a break from the exotic shotgun shell research to test the ballistics of .40S&W brass loaded with the heads of captured Legomen.

Now first off, don’t try this at home unless you know what you are doing and are aware of the procedures for checking and clearing a squib load.

The 19.6-grain heads, shot out of what looks like a tactical/practical Glock G35, were loaded in .40S&W brass over between 1.1 -3.1 grains of Alliant Unique smokeless powder– and were actually pretty impressive.

The heads gripped the rifling and chrono’d out at about 400-500 fps. They proved remarkably accurate, penetrating a few inches of clay, ballistics gel, and a Shrek toy.

Arkansas lawmakers advance bill on concealed guns in parked cars

Tue, 03/14/2017 - 14:05

The Arkansas Senate Judiciary Committee approved a bill Monday that would require private employers to let workers keep handguns locked in their cars if parked in their employer’s parking lot.

The Associated Press reports that Senate Bill 33, proposed by Republican Sen. Jimmy Hickey, would only apply to lawful gun owners with concealed-carry permits and would not prevent employers from prohibiting non-employees from keeping guns in their cars if parked in the employer’s parking lot.

Employers could also prohibit employees under disciplinary actions from keeping firearms in their cars.

The bill will now head to the full Arkansas Senate for a vote.

The good ole .30-30 tested against stacks and stacks of sheet metal (VIDEO)

Fri, 03/10/2017 - 02:08

Edwin Sarkissian breaks out a vintage Winchester Model 94 Texas Ranger Commemorative and pits it against a tabletop of 24 gauge sheet metal.

The .30-30 Winchester/.30 WCF has been around for over 120 years and it has been argued that probably more deer have been shot at with a rifle chambered in the caliber than any other in North America. But how does it stand up to sheet metal?

Speaking of deer rifles and penetration tests, Edwin turns to the .30-06 Springfield from a Remmy Model 742 semi-auto and sweeps the leg.

‘Aught Six, bruh.

Kirsten Joy Weiss does grenade launchers with The Gunny (VIDEO)

Mon, 03/06/2017 - 03:54

“What’s better than shooting a multi-shot grenade launcher? Shooting it with The Gunny, of course,” said pro shooter Kirsten Joy Weiss.

Weiss recently took to the range with R. Lee Ermey, a.k.a. “The Gunny,” to try out the M32A1 grenade launcher, which holds six rounds that can be dumped in mere seconds. The Gunny, however, instructed Weiss to purposely miss the mark because he packed a little surprise in the bunker.

French sniper accidentally shoots 2 people during Hollande speech (VIDEO)

Thu, 03/02/2017 - 08:05

A police sniper accidentally shot two people Tuesday while President Francois Hollande gave a speech in western France.

The sharpshooter had the safety off and the shot was fired while he was moving positions, according to local reports. The bullet hit one person in the thigh and another person in the calf.

“I hope it is nothing serious,” said Hollande during his speech after hearing the gunshot. He paused and looked to his left. “I don’t think so,” he said, continuing the speech.

The injuries were not life threatening.

This is not your typical Benelli M2 (VIDEO)

Wed, 03/01/2017 - 01:48

Matt on Demolition Ranch recently got into 3-gun and picked up a really sweet scattergun from Hayes Custom Guns. He still needs to work on his quad-loads, though.

The Benelli M2 has a 12-shot mag tube, stippled stocks, an opened-up loading port that looks like the top of a toaster, oversized charging handles and safeties, a lightened bolt, reduced power recoil spring to enable it to cycle properly with comp loads, and a caterpillar-sized fiber optic front sight.

Sure, it looks good, but does it shoot?

Check out the vid.

Every 9mm Glock semi-auto model stacked up (VIDEO)

Mon, 02/27/2017 - 04:23

Kicking it off with the G19, “The standard by which all other Glocks are measured,” Hickok45 compares the 9 milly Glocks from the petite G43 to the longslide G17L.

The rundown includes the aforementioned models as well as the G26 Baby Glock subcompact, the standard G17 duty gun, and the G34 Tactical/Practical. The only one really lacking is the select-fire G18 and the fictional “Glock 9” from Die Hard II.

Of course, the guns are Gen 3 and 4, so he is missing out on some first and second generation guns (and the 2.5 for you purists), but by and large the lineup is complete.

Ruger ends year with 21 percent increase in earnings

Thu, 02/23/2017 - 11:49

Despite a flat fourth quarter Sturm, Ruger & Company closed the fiscal year with a 21 percent increase in earnings, according to Wednesday’s filings with federal regulators.

Sales for the Connecticut gun maker slowed alongside the rest of the industry following the presidential election. Fourth quarter sales totaled $161.8 million, a marginal increase from the third and up six percent from last year.

Ruger ended the year with $664.3 million in sales and a $87.5 million profit. Annual revenue breaks down into $264.9 million in rifle sales, $250 million in pistols, $104.9 million in revolvers, $38.6 million in accessories, and $5.9 million in manufacturing services.

New products — meaning firearms introduced in the past two years — represented 29 percent, or $192.6 million, of sales, the filing shows.

Ruger reported demand for its products increased by 12 percent in 2016 as the federal background system, used as a barometer for gun sales, showed an overall increase of 10 percent.

Lead ammo poisons wildlife but too expensive to change, hunters say (AUDIO)

Mon, 02/20/2017 - 07:22

On the day before President Trump’s inauguration, the outgoing Obama administration passed a last-minute directive, banning the use of lead ammunition and fishing sinkers on federal land. Recently, the deteriorating health of a bald eagle showed the effects of lead poisoning. Obama’s regulation is intended to protect wildlife from exactly that. But hunters are hoping Trump will soon overturn it.

Some tips and tricks to cloning the M16A1 (VIDEO)

Tue, 02/14/2017 - 02:49

Retro builds of the old Vietnam-era “Mattel” style M16A1 are super hot these days and Chris Bartocci brings the tribal wisdom down from the mountain on these throwbacks.

Chris really knows what he is talking about when it comes to the AR15/M16 family tree as he is an Army vet, has been a writer for Small Arms Review for more than a decade and wrote the book on the Black Rifle (literally), so listen up.

The ups and downs of the pistol grip shotty for home defense (VIDEO)

Thu, 02/09/2017 - 02:48

Set off by the new 590 Shockwave abbreviated shotty from Mossberg, Ian and Karl with In-Range TV take on claims behind the home defense ability of a pistol-grip-only shotgun.

While they didn’t shell out the dough for the Shockwave, with a 14-inch barrel and shaped bird’s head style pistol grip that doesn’t require a tax stamp, they do have a Persuader model, which is Mossberg’s 500 set up much the same (both have a  26-inch overall length).

With a good bit of gentle ribbing for Mossberg’s pleasure, I&K run their Persuader through a number of drills, then compared their findings with more traditional shotguns.

Moving in close on the new Smith & Wesson M&P 9mm 2.0 (VIDEO)

Thu, 02/09/2017 - 02:30

Hickok45 checks out the updated S&W 2.0 to see how the latest entry in the M&P series stacks up when fed a table full of Federal ammo.

Stoking it on a diet of 115- and 124-grain FMJs and JHPs, Hickok had few bad things to say about Smith’s new polymer framed striker-fired pistol.

“It’s a pretty crisp trigger, the reset is nice…” he says, comparing it against the legacy M&P’s break, though he does caution that he doesn’t like just where it breaks– almost all the way back to the trigger guard– though your mileage may vary.

PBS American Experience: ‘Oklahoma City’ (VIDEO)

Wed, 02/08/2017 - 10:55

“Oklahoma City,” part of PBS’s American Experience series, details the lead up to the horrific bombing by Timothy McVeigh on April 19, 1995, that resulted in 168 people killed and 675 people injured.

The documentary traces the events — including the deadly encounters between American citizens and law enforcement at Ruby Ridge and Waco — that led McVeigh to commit the worst act of domestic terrorism in American history. With a virulent strain of anti-government anger still with us, the film is both a cautionary tale and an extremely timely warning.

The documentary “Oklahoma City” aired Feb. 7, 2017, on PBS.
