Dubbing it the “California AK,” Hickok45 goes in-depth with Ruger’s new American Ranch Rifle chambered in the old Combloc standard cartridge.

Introduced in August, the new 7.62x39mm rifle is a lightweight (under 6 pounds) composite stocked gun that comes complete with a factory scope rail, and Marksman-series adjustable trigger. The 16-inch cold hammer forged barrel is free-floating and uses 5/8″-24 threads on the muzzle. Billed as being able to shoot steel cased ammo and take standard Mini-30 mags, the gun is an interesting amalgam.

And ‘Hickok puts it through its paces with a variety of ammo and targets.

Edwin Sarkissian set up a pair of copper plates and then ran the pistol game on them to see how they held up, topping things off with a big S&W hogleg.

He starts small, with a sedate .22LR, and progresses up the food chain from there with the copper shrugging off various 9mm loads with ease.

Then comes the five hundo, including a nice 700-grain lead pill and a 350-grain Underwood Xtreme Penetrator, with impressive results…from the copper.

Tim with the Military Arms Channel gives Beretta’s APX his famous water-sand-dirt-mud torture test to see how it ticks.

After giving it a 500-round break-in period, Tim starts the dunking chamber with a loaded and ready APX to see how the elements treat the new Italian stallion. The Duncan Hines-quality mud bath is especially gnarly.

After that, the test gets really interesting.

Spoiler alert: Among the more interesting observations that Tim finds is that the impressive Toblerone-esque slide serrations did not work as well as he thought when wet, dirty, sandy and muddy. For more info on that, check out the video.

Edwin Sarkissian checks to see how a few sheets of copper hold up against 647-grains of armor-piercing incendiary tracer.

The 1-inch copper sheets have a beautiful red-orange hue to their surface, but after a red/silver-tipped Freedom Munitions M20 APIT fired from a Serbu BFG-50A, they will probably never be pretty, again.

He follows up with a more gentlemanly black-tipped M2 round, with much different results on the plate.

Matt at Demolition Ranch tests a set of DIY body armor that is probably not up to NIJ specs.

The sandwich is made from 1/4-inch mild steel plate and rubber horse stall mats epoxied together which gives it the appearance of ceramic hard plate– but only if you squint your eyes and watch the video on low-res.

Starting small, Matt drills it with .22LR and .22 Hornet, then pushes it in with 9mm, .45ACP from a CMMG Guard (which is sweet), and a Deagle before reaching for some heavier ordnance.

Overall, the results are pretty impressive for what is likely sub-$100 worth of materials.

Using a Volquartsen Scorpion, the attempt to perforate a target inside said 1980s Dodge Caravan both through the sheet metal quarter panel and then through the firewall in the engine compartment using Federal Bulk loads.

Covering blowgun cultures in depth, KJW delivers a five-minute monologue on various poisons and histories behind the primitive weapon’s use while stalking through the underbrush with muddy feet. It borders on a spoken word piece but it’s jammed full of information and makes a good calming precursor to a lunch break.

Cue the “well, actually” blowgun pro at this point, but we can just mute him and watch KJW again.

Larry Vickers unearthed a rare FN CAL, the Belgian company’s evolutionary dead-end from the Disco era.

Officially known as the Carabine Automatique Légère, it was FN’s first 5.56 mm rifle and predated the much more popular FNC. Just 30,000 were produced and the line ended in 1975.

According to the Blue Book, just 20 of these bad boys were imported to the U.S. by Browning back in the day, giving it bigfoot-rare status here in the states.

Easily mistaken for a full-sized 7.62x51mm FAL from a distance, Vickers calls the nearly 8-pound rifle a “pussy cat” when it comes to recoil and describes it as “probably the softest-shooting .223-caliber weapon I’ve ever shot in my life.”

Tim with the Military Arms Channel evaluates the FightLite MCR belt-fed 5.56mm AR-15 upper and has fun while doing it.

Formerly the Ares Defense Shrike, the MCR is sold both as a closed-bolt all-up semi-auto AR or as an upper and takes either a STANAG magazine or M27 belted 5.56mm ammo. An adjustable gas regulator helps keep the fun going across different ammo types and Tim runs both 55- and 62-grain loads while addressing issues caused by links– which is a whole new thing to worry about.

Following a pre-dawn foot pursuit in Boston’s Mattapan neighborhood, police found an abandoned bag that contained a pistol missing since 1981.

Boston Police report the handgun, a loaded High Standard Supermatic .22LR Model 107 Military, was recovered by officers who chased an unidentified male who jumped out of the rear passenger side door of a car without headlights at about 1:15 a.m. last Friday morning.

While BPD’s finest lost the fleet-footed passenger, they did find the backpack apparently left behind in his wake. On processing, the Supermatic came back reported stolen from Brockton, a city just 15 miles away, in 1981.

High Standard’s Supermatic line was popular throughout the latter half of the 20th Century with the Model 107 variant in production from 1968 until the early 1980s.

Edwin Sarkissian goes on the search for the ultimate master-key and reaches out for a Serbu BFG 50A as a universal adapter.

From the looks of things, Sarkissian is drilling a couple of Master gate locks, which according to their site are made with stainless steel bodies and a boron-carbide shackle. While they have a lifetime guarantee, we don’t think it covers M8 armor-piercing incendiary .50 cal BMG rounds.

LeaSpeed6 is a registered nurse by trade but also enjoys NFA weapons, long walks on the beach, and getting the most out of her subsonic ammo.

Using a Zenith Z5-RS MP5 be-quieted with a SilencerCo Omega9k can, she runs some Hush 165-grain 9mm subsonic against a regular 147-grain sub load for comparison. Although it doesn’t sound a lot different in the vid, she says “I found the Hush to be quieter with a more gas/air tone, and to have an even softer recoil impulse vs the 147gr” while finding feeding, extraction, and point of aim was no different between the two.

The neat thing is, you can hear the brass hitting the deck if you listen.

Authorities are offering a reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of a group of individuals who stole 20 guns from Peterson’s Gun Shop in Sharonville earlier this month.

The federal firearms licensee, located on Reading Road, was the scene of an early morning burglary on July 2 in which suspects were able to enter the shop and leave with the firearms, mostly handguns, but were captured on the above video surveillance.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives is offering a reward of up to $2,500, matched by the National Shooting Sports Foundation, for information.

Very rarely seen outside Finland, Ian with Forgotten Weapons was able to lay hands on a KvKK 62 light machine gun while traveling around the Baltic country.

The Valmet-produced belt-fed LMG in 7.62x39mm (the same caliber that the Finns used in their Valmet rifles), the gun is full-auto only and kinda looks like a Czech ZB-26/BREN gun, but using a 100-round belt held in an under-receiver pouch rather than a top-fed box mag.

The rate of fire is kinda zippy (like 1000 rounds per minute) which puts it on par with the old-school German MG 34/41 and MG42– though it is far from being as pretty.

Gifted a packet of metal buttons, the Taofledermaus shotgun experimenters stacked a few in some 12 gauge shells and went to the range.

Marked “Militaires Equipments” and shaped like UFOs, they appear to be WWI-era French Army buttons– and the thin metal looks like they would make great shrapnel if given enough velocity. With that in mind, the Tao gang makes like the Battle of Verdun on some dated Hi-Fi equipment, a sheet of drywall, and other items in a pretty impressive way.

Tim with the Military Arms Channel stacked up 20 boxes of Fiocchi 115-grain 9mm ball ammo and put the big polymer Sig service pistol through the 1,000 round shootex.

As a variant of the P320 was recently adopted by the U.S. Army as the XM17 pistol after winning the Army Modular Handgun System trial, the test speaks to how reliable the gun could be. Logistics of the test include picking up 25 17-round mags for the Sig and having a crew of three powder monkeys schlepping rounds into mags with the help of some pink mag loaders.

Eric and Chad with IV8888 do an extensive review on the Henry Big Boy Carbine, a handy little cowboy action brush gun that looks pretty, and shoots pretty sweet.

Featuring a 16.5-inch octagon blued steel barrel, the carbine only goes 35-inches overall, or about the length of a Ruger Mini-14 or classic M1 Carbine. While Henry makes these guns in .44 Mag/Spl, .45 Colt, .327 Fed Mag and .41 Mag, the specimen Eric is using is in .357/.38Spl. The tubular under barrel mag holds seven rounds, which he unloads on steel, pop, and melons almost as fast as an M1.

As for the looks?

“The brass frame definitely adds a beauty appeal to it– makes it really classy looking– just a wonderful rifle,” says Eric.
