Finding out how much wallop the big .458 SOCOM brings to the party (VIDEO)

Mon, 12/11/2017 - 12:30

Though usually armed with shotguns and custom shells, the gang at Taofledermaus switches it up to do some serious experimentation with the beefy .458 out of an AR platform.

The big ole’ fat SOCOM round, derived from the .50 AE pistol cartridge, is heavy and slow, delivering a brutal amount of energy into a target– and Tao has a series of 300-grain hard cast hand loads spooled up to run against a variety of targets as the Chronos 1.4 HS camera runs at 8,800 frames per second.

“They look like a big ole tube of lipstick, however, they hit like a ton of bricks,” they say.

Cleaning a Colt Single Action the Hickok way (VIDEO)

Sat, 12/09/2017 - 09:00

After running a mix of handloads and factory ammo on a 110-year-old revolver, Hickok45 walks you through the intricacies of cleaning the classic Colt Peacemaker, by request.

The Single Action Army or 1873, which was standard issue for the U.S. Army at the tail end of the 19th Century, is perhaps one of the most iconic “six-shooters” of the Old West, carried by everyone from Buffalo Bill Cody and Teddy Roosevelt to Pat Garrett and General George S. Patton.  It’s that legacy that has kept in more or less in production ever since.

Speaking of which, the Colt Hickok has was made in 1907 and to keep it ticking, he reaches for the Ballistol and cleaning kit to show how it is done.

This full-auto air rifle will bring the fun to your door without a tax stamp (VIDEO)

Wed, 12/06/2017 - 07:30

Though it looks more like a spear gun than a traditional Red Ryder, the belt-fed Air-Ordnance SMG-22 kicks out up to 700-pellets-per-minute.

Powered by CO2, nitrogen, or high pressure compressed air, the SMG-22 can use either a 100-round drum or a belt feed to cycle .22-caliber pellets through the 7.4-pound rifle. Even though it’s not a rimfire, 22 Plinkster taps in with one of these carnival shooting gallery-style air guns to rip through a flock of balloons, a case of pop, a tub of cheeseballs and other items while weighing in on the gun’s design.

Admit it, you kinda want one.

Gould bros. trade in shotguns for ARs to get some trick new shots (VIDEO)

Tue, 12/05/2017 - 11:00

Best known for their work with scatterguns of all sorts, the Gould brothers pick up a wide variety of Alex Pro Firearms AR-platforms for some first-class exhibition shooting.

From sniping skeet with a .223 DMR at 75 yards to busting balloons at 1,640 yards with a 6.5mm Creedmoor AR-10 PRS, the bros up their game from there with some William Tell-style shooting from over the shoulder.

Then they try a few hard ones.

InForce goes full Tchaikovsky with the Christmas spirit (VIDEO)

Mon, 12/04/2017 - 06:00

Weapon mounted light maker Inforce gave their own, slightly more moto, take on the Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy, complete with lots of Glocks and ARs.

Borrowed from the classic Nutcracker ballet by Russian composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, InForce does a dance of their own with slightly more ballistic percussion while showing off some sweet lights including a number of versions of their APL series.

With the Russian tie-in, however, we think they missed a golden opportunity to throw in a Kalash or two, but hey…

The .338 Lapua can absolutely wreck a block of ballistics gel (VIDEO)

Fri, 12/01/2017 - 01:30

Chris Hirt and Trent Griswold at Bullet Theory Films pit a carbon fiber Christensen Arms rifle in .338 Lapua against an unsuspecting gel block just to watch it dance in slo-mo.

The Christensen Arms bolt gun is super lightweight and it’s topped with a giant hunk of NightForce glass, but they don’t really need it as they rocket a 285-grain Hornady ELD Match– which is rated at a whopping 4,768 ft./lbs. of energy at the muzzle– through the Clear Ballistics block sitting just 31-feet away.

But the effect of the energy transfer, captured at 60,000 frames-per-second, is just magical.

Hosed-off lawmaker challenges media to search his car for hidden gun (VIDEO)

Wed, 11/22/2017 - 01:30

Rankled by news of police officers having their guns easily swiped from personal cars and cruisers, a Tennessee state senator challenged a local reporter to find the handgun hidden in his car.

Republican state Sen. Jon Lundberg told WJHL he was disappointed about the reports that as many as two dozen police guns were stolen in Tennessee since 2010, with three officers disciplined over the matter. Stressing the importance of securing firearms left in vehicles, he gave a reporter a full minute to rummage through his SUV on a $20 bet that the newshound couldn’t sniff out his gun. The amateur bandit failed.

“It’s frankly just a good reminder for folks,” said Lundberg, a concealed carry permit holder.

Getting it done with a Marine M27 IAR, ‘aggressive semi-auto fire’ (VIDEOS)

Fri, 11/17/2017 - 09:00

The 2nd Marine Division’s Gunner addresses the applicability of using automatic vs. semi-automatic fire when it comes to putting rounds on target.

In another installment of “Ask the Gunner,” CW5 Christian P. Wade uses a sometimes-suppressed (squee) M27 Infantry Automatic Rifle in 5.56mm to lay down some hate at varying distances to see what works best: pew, pew or pewpewpewpew.

A select-fire variant of the Heckler & Koch HK416, the IAR has been increasingly fielded since 2010 to replace the M249 Squad Automatic Weapon, a more traditional belt-fed light machine gun, in most roles.

“Testing has also conclusively shown that the M249 is a ~12 MOA weapon; far less reliable, responsive, and has a slower rate of fire than our Automatic Rifle,” says Wade in commentary on the unit’s social media account.

Comparing Canadian gun laws with those in Texas (VIDEO)

Thu, 11/02/2017 - 09:15

Matt with Demolition Ranch spent some time in the Great North where he found some curious contradictions in Canada’s guns while visiting the range.

After a nearly three-minute long extended opening to hawk merch, the confusing Canadian bacon begins to cook, delving into the odd classifications north of the border on restricted and prohibited guns.

On the outright batshit side of things, if you own an AR-15 you can only shoot it at a range, but chopped shotguns and rifles which would need a tax stamp here are apparently fine. Plus, they get a lot of interesting guns from China and Russia that are embargoed here.

A real Twilight Zone scenario in some cases, but with more maple syrup.

Draco vs Shockwave, because who wants a stock anyway (VIDEO)

Wed, 11/01/2017 - 11:15

John Hickok stacks up the Micro Draco AK and the Mossberg Shockwave 590 to see which of the popular range toys have the most capability.

Pitting the pair– the first a 7.62x39mm handgun with a 6.25-inch barrel and the second a 12 gauge “firearm” with a 14-inch barrel– against watermelon and various targets, John makes some observations on accuracy and usefulness.

The term “truck gun” is used.

Just what does it take to make nitroglycerin go off? (VIDEO)

Thu, 10/26/2017 - 09:15

YouTube science channel Cody’s Lab– probably unwisely– decided to test setting off small amounts of nitrated glycerol with everything from a hammer to a .22LR.

Brewing his own nitro (not recommended), he gets some loud “cracks” when hitting the heat/pressure-sensitive liquid with a maul on an anvil and blows apart a cheap knife along with part of his fingertip before moving on to a Marlin Model 60.

The first shot was unimpressive, but the second and third made up for it.

Man busted for illegally selling guns outside of Burger King (VIDEO)

Mon, 10/23/2017 - 08:15

A 41-year-old man from Fresno, California, was arrested Thursday night after authorities caught him selling guns outside of a Burger King restaurant in the Southwest part of the city.

It’s unclear how officers learned of the roadside gun sales, but when they arrived on the scene around 10 p.m., Levi Hill was promptly taken into custody. While searching Hill’s vehicle, officers found a hidden compartment in the trunk, which contained a sawed-off 12-gauge shotgun and an extra magazine.

A deputy fatally shot a man holding a woman at gunpoint during a hostage situation in Simpsonville, South Carolina, according to local reports.

The scene escalated around 4:45pm on Monday when the suspect James Michael Chappell walked out of a building behind a house. When deputies “challenged” him, he responded by running back inside the building and yelling that he had a hostage.

A short time later, Chappell came back outside while pointing a gun at a woman. A deputy opened fire, striking Chappell in the head. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Introducing the Ammolance, a range vehicle with some style (VIDEO)

Fri, 10/20/2017 - 10:45

A YouTuber this week showcased his second-hand 1984 Ford ambulance recycled into a nice rig for use in getting guns, gear, and people to the range and back.

Complete with a big block 460 and lots of compartments, Che Cook bought the ambulance for $3,000 from a church in Idaho that had been using it to carry A/V equipment around. Swapping out a lot of assemblies, he added some new lights and weather-stripping then coated the exterior in an FDE-ish shade of truck bed liner which gives the whole thing a non-skid look.

Just wait till you see the inside…

Spitting fireballs with the AKS-74u Krinkov (VIDEO)

Tue, 10/17/2017 - 10:45

Ziga and Manca with Polenar Tactical test out a legit Warsaw Pact Krinkov both with and without the booster to see what effect the muzzle device has on 5.45x39mm fireball mitigation.

The gas booster helps the weapon to cycle properly while also eating up a lot of muzzle flash due to unburnt propellant igniting at the abbreviated end of the  AKS-74u’s tiny barrel — and they have the footage to prove it.

Also, Ziga weighs in at the end of the clip on the proper terminology for the Krink, which has long been a contentious matter of gun blog discussion in the West.

Fore! Kicking out golf balls via AR blanks (VIDEO)

Wed, 10/11/2017 - 11:15

Matt from Demolition Ranch hits the links and pits a ballistic gel torso against a .223 blank-powered golf ball launcher.

These things have been available for a few years but they never get old, and in typical Demo Ranch style, Matt moves through a number of different loads starting with some used driving range balls and moving on to sponge balls and wiffles.

Then comes the potato.

And somehow, despite the multitude of ricocheting balls, there were no on-camera injuries.

Attempting to turn a shotgun into a railroad spike driver (VIDEO)

Wed, 10/04/2017 - 10:45

Responding to a question concerning the possibility of driving a standard railroad spike into a block of wood using shotgun slugs, the Taofledermaus research team ran an experiment.

Using various Federal 12 gauge slugs out of a Mossberg pump, they hammer away at the head of the spike– getting some impressive accuracy at times.

And energy transfer (or lack thereof) is the key to this test.

Also, don’t try this at home as firing big wads of lead at steel objects is often hazardous to your health.
