Plinking around with the Tippman M4 .22LR rifle (VIDEO)

Fri, 07/07/2017 - 12:00

Rimfire connoisseur 22Plinkster goes in-depth on Tippmann’s .22LR M4 clone and compares it to the more common Smith & Wesson M&P 15-22 rifle.

The biggest difference that the Tippmann offering brings to the table is that it uses both an aluminum upper and lower, whereas the S&W runs polymer downstairs. The (almost) mil-spec lower, as noted by ‘Plink, gives the Tippmann a better feel and puts it more in the training rifle category, especially with .22LR ammo now trending lower on the retail scale.

He runs it with and without optics, with bulk pack and match ammo (that group, though) out to 100 yards, and adds a can for effect.

The newest snake on the block: The Colt Cobra (VIDEO)

Thu, 07/06/2017 - 10:00

Getting back into the revolver biz after a lengthy hiatus, Colt’s stainless steel-framed Cobra gets a work out from Hickok45.

The hardy snub was long a part of Colt’s line, being in production from 1950-81 in one form or another, but the new version is a complete redesign.

Weighing in at 25-ounces, the only polymer on the new gun seems to be in the red fiber optic front sight post. Matte finished with Hogue Overmolded grips, the six-shooter is chambered in .38SPL and rated for +P loads.

Hickok even breaks out the old-school wadcutters and does some paper punching as part of the warm up before moving to the heavy lifting.

Standing up to a 37mm black powder cannon with a Humvee windscreen (VIDEO)

Wed, 07/05/2017 - 07:24

Eric with IV8888 pits the two-inch thick front glass of a Humvee against a 1.4-pound lead projectile fired from a mini Parrot gun.

The giant Minié-style projectile, about the size of a chili dog and is propelled by some cannon grade black powder, can zip through most common barriers. We are talking about something like 45,000 ft./lbs. of energy here– but the glass is pretty thick. Maybe not cannon thick, but still…

Going cyclic with a select-fire AK47 can, in fact, be a good day (VIDEO)

Wed, 07/05/2017 - 07:24

Contrary to the words of the warrior poet Ice Cube, reaching for a full-auto modified Serbian N-PAP AK with a drum mag along for the ride can actually be a lot of fun.

In the above vid, Hickok45 rips through a formerly semi-auto AK pistol loaned by Royal Range. Featuring an 8-inch barrel and a nice brake, the PAP does well against interloping targets of opportunity.

Almost as well as the converted SBR’d underfolder rifle complete with a Magpul Zhukov handguard and vert grip Hickok turns to next.

We gotta say, it looks like a good day.

Remington’s RP9 semi-auto goes 300 rounds with Hickok45 (VIDEO)

Fri, 06/30/2017 - 07:44

Introduced earlier this year, the new polymer-framed 9mm from Remington is a full-sized handgun but still looks small in the hands of Hickok45.

The Remington RP9 is a duty-sized pistol with an 18+1 capacity due to its double-stack magazine. With a 4.5-inch barrel, the overall length is 7.91-inches and weighs in at 26.4-ounces unloaded. Equipped with adjustable 3-dot sights, the slide is stainless but carries Remmy’s PVD finish.

Sure, sure, specs are nice, but how does this $500-ish gun shoot, especially in light of past offerings (*cough* R51) by the company? Check out the above video for more information.

Czech officials move to deputize legal gun owners in defense of nation

Thu, 06/29/2017 - 13:14

The lower chamber of Czech Parliament on Wednesday approved an amendment to the country’s Constitution allowing legal gun owners to participate in the country’s defense, the Associated Press reported.

The 139-9 majority vote was reportedly a reaction to the European Union’s directive banning certain semi-automatic weapons. Should this constitutional amendment pass the Czech Upper House of Parliament, the country’s 300,000 gun license holders will essentially be deputized state officials and exempt from the EU dictate.

The EU rule is too restrictive, by majority Czech standards, and is reportedly a reaction itself to recent extremist attacks in Europe. The Czech Republic has vowed to file legal action against the EU’s directive, the Associated Press reported.

Cabela’s names Century Arms ‘strategic partner’

Thu, 06/29/2017 - 11:35

Retailer Cabela’s has named Century Arms a “strategic partner” of the year as an award for its ongoing business relationship, according to the AK maker’s statement this week.

The “Strategic Partners of the Year” award given by the retailer recognizes select vendors for how they influence sales, meet customer service goals, and inventory and margin, the statement says.

“The support that Century Arms has given Cabela’s has allowed both companies to grow with each other in an, at times, challenging market,” said Nick Evans, Cabela’s category manager.

The statement adds the relationship between the two companies has grown exponentially over the years.

Century is one of the largest AK makers in the U.S., producing more than 65,000 AK-style firearms in 2015, according to federal data.

Cabela’s, which sells firearms, ammo and outdoor goods, has reported more than $3 billion in sales each year.

Digging up ammo cans from the bottom of a pond after a year (VIDEO)

Thu, 06/29/2017 - 08:15

In an experiment to see how well metal GI and commercial plastic ammo cans work for storing rounds, a prepper sunk four in a pond and came back after a year.

Mike Adams, a self-described prepper who posts under TheHealthRanger channel on YouTube, deep-sixed a pair of used GI .30 caliber cans alongside another pair of plastic dry boxes. Two made it, and two didn’t. All were filled with ammo.

The only thing we have to say is to question why he was cool with risking all that nice CCI Velocitor to the pond scum when a couple packs of Tula .223 could have verified the hypothesis in the experiment. The horrors. The horrors.

Mossad hushpuppy: The suppressed Beretta 71 pistol (VIDEO)

Wed, 06/28/2017 - 08:29

Jeff Bloovman of Armed Dynamics and Nick Humphries of Practically Tactical go quietly with the vaunted Beretta 71, which has a super cool history.

Marketed as the Jaguar, the M71 used a lightweight alloy frame to produce a 1960s-era pistol that tipped the scales at just 17-ounces. The 8/9-shot .22LR, using a 3.5-inch barrel was very accurate, and, when coupled with an early wipe-style pill bottle type suppressor, was very quiet. The concealable and compact pistol was used by Israeli El Al air marshals and, according to a lot of reports, officers of both the Mossad intelligence agency and Sayeret Matkal military intelligence.

Jeff and Nick use a more modern Griffin Checkmate can in the above video, but you more than get the idea.

Maryland man pleads guilty to making sawed-off shotgun

Tue, 06/27/2017 - 10:44

A Maryland man pleaded guilty Monday to making an illegal firearm, admitting he sawed off the barrel of a shotgun.

According to a Justice Department news release, 44-year-old Ian Nigel Page, of Crownsville Maryland, cut down the barrel of a Remington 12-gauge shotgun to less than 18 inches in Preston County, West Virginia in May 2015.

Page could face up to 10 years in prison and a fine of up to $10,ooo. However, the sentence handed down will be based on seriousness of offense and criminal history of the defendant.

The case was investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives and the Preston County Sheriff’s Office investigated.

The inside of this funky weapon looks more Rube Goldberg than machine gun (VIDEO)

Fri, 06/23/2017 - 10:13

The French took the badly designed M1905 Puteaux machine gun and fixed it to make the horribly designed St. Etienne M1907.

Officially Mitrailleuse Saint Etienne Mle 1907, the 8mm Lebel chambered machine gun was a gas operated blow-forward clockwork design that had a variable rate of fire from 60 to 600 rounds per minute– if it worked.

That’s just the thing, as seen in the above video from C&Rsenal, the inner workings of the M1907 was extremely complex. This left it prone to overheating and jamming, just the thing when confronting the Germans.

Just a quiet walk through the woods with an HK MP5SD (VIDEO)

Wed, 06/21/2017 - 07:54

Hickok45 came across a “real deal” Heckler & Koch MP5SD sub gun with an integral suppressor to check out the woods around the redoubt for targets of opportunity.

It’s got all the goodies, being a suppressed SBR with a selector switch and onboard en-quieter that is capable of putting the hush on even supersonic hardball. The MP5SD was developed in the 1970s for commandos and was designed to allow standard NATO ball– already in service for sub guns and handguns– to be used in the integrally suppressed little SMG, all the while being so quiet all you hear is the Freedom.

And Hickok lets it ring.

Lock and load: Blasting lock parts out of a 12 ga shotgun (VIDEO)

Tue, 06/20/2017 - 05:31

After being gifted into a bag of lock core cylinders without keys, the shotgun testers over at Taofledermaus stuffed them inside a 12 gauge low brass hull and went to the range.

The cores came all the way from Israel and some had to be stabilized with a rubber o-ring though (spoiler) these things tumble more than OPEC oil prices did after fracking. Cue the tumbler and keyhole puns.

Guess we now know why Schlage doesn’t make shotgun slugs.

Fidget spinners are not rated for .50 cal (VIDEO)

Mon, 06/19/2017 - 06:20

The VSO Gun Channel got curious to see if a fidget spinner had the ballistic guts needed to bring out the best in a .50 caliber BMG incendiary round.

Using 640-grain Freedom Munitions APIs launched from an ArmaLite AR-50, they for sure bring the heat, but it does take a couple of tries before they get a nice “poof”.

Yet somehow, it still spins….what do they make these things out from?

How an exhibition shooter works practice in while making calls (VIDEO)

Thu, 06/15/2017 - 14:24

Italian shotgunner Raniero Testa posted a quick clip to social media of how he keeps in touch while still breaking clays.

Testa recently beat his own record for dusting the most clays in a single hand toss (13) while working against the clock (1.6 secs) so making clay dust while yaking about linguine or whatever on his phone seems simple enough.

It looks like he did come close to the edge of his soccer shoes with that muzzle, though. It’s all fun and games until you have to get an orthopedic boot.

But regardless, Testa, 29, hails from Isola del Liri and, according to his site, holds at least five different shotgun records.

Visiting with a Big Horn .500S&W lever-action carbine (VIDEO)

Tue, 06/13/2017 - 11:50

Cody, Wyoming is home to Big Horn Armory who makes a really stout lever-action rifle in .500 S&W Magnum.

BHA crafts a number of these modern cowboy guns, with their Model 89 Spikedriver, based on the old school Model 1886 and Model 1892 Winchesters, but providing a modern platform in 17-4 stainless steel with an 18-inch barrel.

It’s not cheap (think $2K in the basic set-ups) but Hickok45 really likes it in the above video. When coupled with the hard-hitting 5-Hundo, “it’s a serious piece of hardware, no doubt about it,” he says.

Dry ice is neat, but is it bullet proof against .50 BMG (VIDEO)

Mon, 06/12/2017 - 12:55

Matt with Demolition Ranch picked up a bunch of watermelons and assorted target media — such as dry ice — to test some backyard ballistics.

With dry ice being nominally tougher than normal frozen H2O, and stacked 18 inches deep, is it reasonable to expect it to scoff at 671-grains of Freedom?

Watch the video and find out, then stick around and check to see if they can shoot through bales of hay, bags of sand, trees, surplus refrigerators, and stacks of ceramic tile, which are not as cool (see what we did) as the dry ice, but still interesting.

Giving the good ole Glock 19 a nasty goo bath, for science (VIDEO)

Mon, 06/12/2017 - 12:45

Ian and Karl with InRangeTV take a break from their series of mud tests on military small arms to give the vaunted G19 a dunk in the wheelbarrow.

Sure, you have seen a barrel full of Glock torture tests, but you haven’t seen the renowned Austrian polymer pistol as tested by the same crew that has killed any number of modern firearms.

Warning, if you are a Glock fanboy you probably don’t want to fool with this video as, for the record, the Hi-Point C9, 1911, and Luger P.08 actually did a bit better in their previous runs through the filth than the Glock.

Any given Sunday, right?

400-year-old musket balls still work just fine when loaded in a shotgun (VIDEO)

Fri, 06/09/2017 - 06:00

Gifted a sack of relic musket balls from the 1600s dug up around the British Isles, the shotgun squad at Taofledermaus loaded them up in hulls and took to the range.

Stuffing them into 12 gauge hulls with the base filled with a bit of silly putty, these “dropped” post-medieval balls are about as accurate at close range as they were back in the day– though they do manage to amp up the velocity over what the old smoothbore black powder smoke poles typically generated.
