A sea lion was hungry …

Sat, 05/02/2015 - 17:21

A San Diego man is still recovering more than three weeks after a sea lion leaped seven feet from the water, locked onto his hand holding a yellow-tail fish and yanked him overboard.

Dan Carlin, 62, said that his wife had just told him to smile for the photo on their 29 foot boat when he was pulled overboard, smashed into the boat’s side, and taken some 20 feet underwater.

Carlin says he thought he was going to die until he was released more than 15 seconds later. The sea lion bit him on his foot as he swam away.

WATCH: Snarling Raccoons Attack Coyote over Squirrel Meat

Fri, 05/01/2015 - 13:45

If you’ve never heard an angry raccoon growl before, it’s likely to send a shiver down your spine. These masked critters can be downright frightening when provoked, yet the coyote in the video below was just too hungry to leave its meal behind.

Two raccoons tried to the scavenger off what appears to be a squirrel carcass, but the dogged coyote kept coming back to snag one last bite. This trail cam happened to be just in the right place at the right time and recorded a pursuit that looks like it came straight out of a cartoon.

Oklahoma Man Lands Largest Fish in State History

Fri, 05/01/2015 - 13:44

Last Thursday, an Oklahoma angler crushed the record for the largest fish ever caught in the state with an alligator gar that weighed a staggering 254 pounds. Paul Easley of Mead snagged the beast of a fish in Lake Texoma last week and was able to have the fish certified by a state wildlife biologist before releasing the eight-foot gar back into the water.

“It did swim off,” Matt Mauck, regional fisheries supervisor for the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation (DWC), told The Oklahoman. “They made their best attempt to get it back in the water alive. She did not appear to need any encouragement to leave…”

New Elzetta Design Mini-CQB Weaponlight

Tue, 04/28/2015 - 13:12

I’ve fallen in love with Elzetta Design’s lights in the past few years.  I even hesitate to call them “flashlights” because that sounds so cheap compared to the quality that these lights boast.  “Handheld tactical illumination devices” seems more like it.  These by far, are the most robust lights in the industry.  Boasting of CNC milled aircraft grade aluminum body, potted electronics, Malkoff and Auto Voltage Sensing illumination heads, and a completely modular design truly makes these the most rugged lights on the planet.  I have one of each model, the 900 lumen Charlie model is mounted on my “hog rifle”, the 2 cell Bravo in my bag, and the smaller 315 lumen Alpha stays in my pocket 24/7, and now I’m happy to announce the newest Mini CQB integrated weapons mount is shipping soon.

The Amazing, Handy, Gotta-Carry-Them Zip-Ties

Tue, 04/28/2015 - 10:00

As a boater, there are a few items you always keep on hand. A length of rope. Extra drain plugs. A spare life jacket. I could walk out to any of my boats right now (or for that matter, to my truck), and lay my hands on any one of these items. Here’s one more thing, which should certainly be on the list: zip-ties.

WATCH: Trapped Snake “Thanks” Rescuers with Regurgitated Frog

Mon, 04/27/2015 - 14:28

Usually, helping wildlife in need is its own reward, but sometimes nature can surprise you. When two young men cut this entangled snake free in the video below, the creature showed its gratitude by vomiting up a smelly, half-digested frog. Not exactly a reward most people would enjoy, but there’s more to this story than it would seem.

Video contains very strong language. In fact, you might want to mute it.

Ford recalls almost 400,000 late model vehicles

Sun, 04/26/2015 - 18:31

It has been relatively quiet on the recall front, but that appears to be changing with Ford’s recall of more than 390,000 vehicles for a door latch problem. The company said Friday that the problem may prevent doors from closing properly potentially causing them to open while the vehicle is in motion.

Viral Video Quickly Leads to Winchester SXP Shotgun Recall

Thu, 04/23/2015 - 12:33

There is a reason that one of the most important rules of firearm safety is to keep your gun pointed in a safe direction at all times. This is true whether the gun is unloaded, your finger is off the trigger, or if the safety is on. Sometimes, it’s especially true if you think your safety is activated. A viral video uploaded to YouTube last Friday quickly garnered more than 600,000 views, along with raising a fair bit of concern for shotgun owners. In it, a gun owner demonstrated a rare and extremely hazardous malfunction for the Winchester SXP shotgun. According to the video uploader, when loaded the SXP has the ability to fire simply by closing the action.

WATCH: This Spider Crab Pyramid Will Make Your Skin Crawl

Thu, 04/23/2015 - 12:30

Those with arachnophobia, or a fear of spiders, may want to skip watching this video. After all, spider crabs look just like giant spiders—albeit with claws, a tougher exoskeleton, and apparently the ability to form giant pyramids in the bottom of the ocean.

One scuba diver managed to record this massive pyramid of spider crabs near Melbourne, Australia. It’s one of the creepiest things we’ve ever seen.
