Fri, 08/07/2015 - 13:19

This shark probably knew it looked cool.

This amazing footage was taken, fittingly, by the team of White Shark Video during a trip to Mossel Bay in South Africa. Sharks don’t usually a have a reputation for being curious, but the great whites living near Mossel Bay are actually fairly inquisitive creatures and come out often to greet ships…

Lasiognathus Dinema – What?

Thu, 08/06/2015 - 09:44

A new species of fish has been discovered deep in the Gulf of Mexico. Described as spiky, snaggle-toothed, the fish was discovered by scientists, Tracey Sutton of Nova Southeastern University and Theodore Pietsch from University of Washington while studying sea life at extreme ocean depths in response to the Deepwater Horizon oil spill.

The species of anglerfish was discovered in water between 3,300 and 4,900 feet.

The new species, less than 4 inches long, uses a lure mounted on its head to attract prey.

Sutton said the discovery of the new species shows how little we know about life in the deep ocean. The surveyed area around the spill site was about the size of West Virginia.

Dead zone is bigger than predicted

Thu, 08/06/2015 - 09:20

The dead zone in the Gulf of Mexico, an area of little or no oxygen, is the 11th largest measured and nearly 18 percent bigger than predicted. The area, 6,474 square miles is as big as Connecticut and Rhode Island combined. Last year’s dead zone was about the size of Connecticut.

Federal and state scientists said the reason for the enlargement is due to heavy June rains throughout the Mississippi River watershed which carried nutrient-rich runoff from farms and other human activities into the Gulf.

Those nutrients, mainly nitrogen and phosphorus feed algae and other one-celled plants that die and fall to the bottom where their decomposition uses up oxygen

Hiker Comes Face-to-face with Mountain Lion (VIDEO)

Tue, 08/04/2015 - 10:44

There’s a saying that if you spot a mountain lion, they want to be seen. Cougars are naturally stealthy and rarely reveal themselves to passing hikers, but this man visiting Montana’s Glacier National Park seems to have caught one off guard. However, what started off as delighted fascination quickly gave way to alarm as the mountain lion crouched down and advanced on the hiker…

Man Attempts to Feed Snake a Fish, Gets Bitten Instead (VIDEO)

Tue, 08/04/2015 - 10:41

From what we could tell initially, this guy was not so smart.  After further review of this video, we realized that this snake may be conditioned to be fed by hand.

Either way, this Diamondback Water Snake seems to miss the mark and go after guy instead of the fish.

A word to the wise, I wouldn’t try this one at home.  Check out the video below:

A 60 MPH Pontoon Boat? YEAH!!

Tue, 08/04/2015 - 09:00

If you’re one of those guys who still makes fun of pontoon boats, believe me, I understand the temptation. For a long, long time I thought these things were a joke among “real” boaters. But then some manufacturers started really pushing the pontoon limits; in the past five years we’ve seen 30′ long pontoons with twin engines and joystick controls; pontoons that were (well) designed as dedicated fishing pontoon boats; and pontoons with full bars including stools, blenders, and pop-up TV’s. Wow. Well, here’s another wow for you: some builders are now making high-performance pontoons. And recently I had the chance to run a 25-footer with an F350 Yamaha 350 HP outboard on the transom. Yes, 350 horses on a 25-foot ‘toon.
