California police defend homeowner who shot suspect (VIDEO)

Wed, 04/18/2018 - 06:00

California authorities are defending the actions of a homeowner who shot an intruder trying to break-in through the front window.

“We’re glad when any homeowner protects themselves, that’s what they need to do in these situations,” said Hesperia Police Sgt. Marc Bracco. “That’s why you’re allowed to carry a firearm in your residence.”

The incident happened on March 30, when 36-year-old Michael Goode, tried to break-in to a home in Hesperia. But Goode was disrupted when the homeowner opened fire, striking Goode. In search of help, the suspect tried to ask a neighbor for help. When police arrived, they found Goode on the front yard of the home.

The homeowner was not hurt and will not be facing any charges. Goode was taken to the hospital in critical condition.

Rimfire classic: The Remington Model 552 Speedmaster (VIDEO)

Fri, 04/13/2018 - 11:00

First manufactured in 1957, the Speedmaster has been around for over half a century and, as noted by Jeff Quinn, “it’s probably one of finest .22 semi-automatic rifles ever made.”

Designed for Big Green back when Gunsmoke was one of the most popular shows on television, the Model 552s big claim to fame was that it was one of the only American-made autoloaders able to run .22 Short, Long and Long Rifle interchangeably. Quinn even stokes it with some CCI Quiet loads, which run a 40-grain bullet at a low velocity– 710 feet per second– and is billed as being hearing safe without a suppressor.

Of course, new 552s have an MSRP of $700-ish, but they are still pretty sweet little rifles.

The very nice 7.62×39 classic that isn’t an AK (VIDEO)

Wed, 03/28/2018 - 09:30

Czechoslovakia went their own way in the 1950s and, rather than adopt the Soviet Kalashnikov, opted instead for the homegrown Vzor 58 in the same caliber.

The standard issue rifle for the Czech military, almost a million Vz.58s were made by 1984 and, as Larry Vickers points out in the above video, while it looks like the AK a bit, the falling breechblock striker-fired Cold War standard is totally different.

And when the fun switch is engaged, it will rock out at 800 rounds per minute.

How about a German-made factory full-auto .22LR AK47 variant (VIDEO)

Tue, 03/27/2018 - 10:30

Back during the Cold War, when there were two radically different German nations, the more Workers’ Paradise one made a peculiar .22LR Kalash.

The gun, a rimfire variant of East Germany’s domestically-brewed KK-MPi 69 (what they termed their Suhl-made AKMs), was made as a downsized trainer for the country’s huge Warsaw Pact-oriented military. Today, they have been released out into the wild though sadly most are not transferable as they were still very much behind the Iron Curtain prior to 1984.

However, Hank Strange and Walter with Safety Harbor Firearms have one of these neat-o lead slingers from the old DDR days and use it to send some serious lead downrange with and without dust cover.

You are welcome.

Rob Leatham on speed vs. accuracy when shooting (VIDEO)

Wed, 03/21/2018 - 09:30

“Speed is always good once the accuracy is there,” says competition shooter Rob Leatham, as he kicks off a discussion into the pitfall that rests in the intersection of the two skills.

If you dig the above and it helps get you toward where you want to go, check out Rob opining below on the who would win a gunfight– a competition shooter or a tactical shooter.

What they do to these beautiful AKs would make Mikhail Kalashnikov cry (VIDEO)

Mon, 03/19/2018 - 09:30

Somewhere in Poland, they have crates of immaculate Circle 11 factory-marked AKMS rifles that have to be turned into parts kits.

The above video follows a random C11 as it is jolted from its slumber inside a wooden crate full of siblings marked “kbk AKM” which is short for “Karabinek” or carbine. Once on the workbench, the gun is shown to have all-matching serial numbers in multiple places as it is disassembled to harvest all the usable parts from it– and we do mean every part. Thankfully, they don’t show the worst parts of what happens to the abandoned receiver and barrel.

Testing to see if you can fire a flare gun underwater (VIDEO)

Tue, 03/06/2018 - 10:30

Sure, Glocks, grenades, and M80s all work while submerged, but what about a good ol’ 12 gauge flare gun?

Taping an Orion Alerter single-shot break action flare launcher to a dumbbell and tossing it into a 10-gallon fish aquarium — no fish were harmed in this video — Edwin Sarkissian gets to work with one of the only California-legal pistols still on the market.

The bad news is (spoiler alert) they can’t make it happen unless the frame is above water, and then the aerial flare, which needs oxygen, doesn’t really do anything.

Testing out the Hardcore Defense Alpha Shield (VIDEO)

Wed, 02/21/2018 - 10:30

Certified to stop most handgun rounds, the 14-pounds Alpha Shield is designed to provide a good deal of protection in the form of ballistic steel across the upper body, if used correctly.

Matt with Demolition Ranch checks out the $299 shield from Hardcore Defense, which is NIJ Level IIIA rated. On the bright side, it can stop .44 Magnum out of a handgun, but of course its rifle rating is much less.

How much less?

Matt starts with .22LR and works his way up.

Splitting cards via a .22 after shot straight through the barrel of a Glock (VIDEO)

Wed, 02/21/2018 - 08:30

Rimfire madmad 22Plinkster clocks back into exhibition shooting by seeing if he can zip a round through a spare barrel and take out the offending playing card on the other side.

Sure, he has shot through soda straws and Lifesaver’s holes in the past, so the challenge doesn’t seem too daunting at first, but there are some hiccups. Further, he warns that “No Glock 19 barrels were harmed in the making of this video.”

Because someone has to think about the barrels.

Lighting it up with some Dragon’s Breath shells (VIDEO)

Fri, 02/16/2018 - 09:00

Filled with a compound that produces 5000-degree burning metal particles, the Taofledermaus crew gets in touch with their inner pyromaniacs in testing War Wolf Ordnance’s Dragon’s Breath rounds.

Sure, these novelty shells have very limited application and are expensive– like $5 a pop– but War Wolf says they are their most popular round. We mean who wouldn’t want to use their shotgun as a flamethrower– once.

And of course, you may have seen a Dragon’s Breath round go off before, but have you seen them through the lens of high-speed cameras from numerous angles and against a variety of targets that are just asking for it? On that note, rest in peace, Keyboard Karl.

Shooting lines of Tide Pods for redneck science (VIDEO)

Thu, 02/15/2018 - 07:30

For some reason these brightly colored laundry detergent packs are irresistible, but how do they fare against .22LR CCI Velocitors? Now that’s a Tide Pod challenge worth watching.

Smallbore pundit 22Plinkster lined up 25 pods in a row to see just how pretty the colors could be when mixed by a 40-grain gilded hollow point traveling at 1435 feet per second.

Plinking a drop of water with a .22LR as it’s falling (VIDEO)

Tue, 02/06/2018 - 09:00

Is it possible with a .22LR to snuff out a falling drop of good old-fashioned H2O as it speeds to the earth? We know a guy.

Backyard rimfire trick shot 22 Plinkster accepts the challenge using a custom S&W Victory build tricked out with a Volquartsen carbon fiber barrel and a Trijicon RMR red dot. Dropping back too 20 feet, he films he event with three cameras just to try to catch the magic.

And just to show there were some scrubs, he shows the other three missed shots just for the record.

Answering the riddle of the bullet proof shovel (VIDEO)

Mon, 02/05/2018 - 07:30

Matt on Demolition Ranch went all-in at a local hardware store and stacked up a series of shovels, then proceeded to see if there is such as thing as a shovel that could stop a bullet.

Starting with aluminum snow scoops and moving to pointed shovels and drain spades, Matt steps from .22LR to 9mm and beyond to dig through the destructive testing.

Then comes a chopper/scraper with a thick steel blade that seems to shrug off everything, until the FAL comes out. And what a sweet, non-California-compliant, FAL it is.

Franchi is debuting their first ever bolt-action rifle called Momentum at this year’s SHOT Show. This sleek rifle is equipped with a spiral fluted bolt, which is easily disassembled and has a short throw of 60 degrees. Some other noteable features of the Momentum are the threaded barrel, complete with thread protector, and a TSA recoil pad which sits on a nicely made stock. Another big plus for the Momentum is a crisp trigger that can be adjusted from 4 lbs to 2 lbs. The new product from Franchi will be available in six calibers to start and will be hitting store shortly in 2018.

Tapping in 9mm blanks to fire crossbow bolts (VIDEO)

Tue, 01/09/2018 - 11:30

In a workshop somewhere in Germany, Bavarian slingshot maniac Joerg Sprave cobbled together a Rube Goldberg-style adapter to launch crossbow bolts with a pistol.

Using a steel-barreled 9mm starter pistol, Sprave comes up with a fixed-tube blowgun attachment held on with a vertical grip to channel the force of the blank into a crossbow bolt and send it flying downrange. In the end, it works, but in our opinion needs more power. Maybe some of those sweet old school 30.06 M3 rifle grenade crimp jobs for instance. Now that would be sweet.

Ho, Ho, Ho.

Railroad plates vs .50-cal BMG of various pedigree (VIDEO)

Mon, 12/18/2017 - 11:00

Edwin Sarkissian armors up to fire some shots through a few surplus rail tie plates with a Serbu BFG-50A to get a handle on just how much BMG they can handle.

Tie plates, also apparently called base plates or sole plates in the railway business, are used to join the wooden sleepers (ties) to the sections of rail themselves– just in case you are curious– and are capable of taking a lot of punishment. Like maybe the punishment of 671-grains of .50 cal.

As a control after he makes a piece of modern art, Sarkissian rings one of the plates with a 9mm and it barely even scratched the surface.

Celebrating Christmas the Black Rifle Coffee way (VIDEO)

Mon, 12/18/2017 - 08:00

You’ve got Ralphie in the bunny suit, bad Christmas sweaters, trick shots that aren’t, ballistic jingle bells and even Santa with an M249 SAW. Ho, Ho, Ho!

The bloopers are actually better than the real thing.

And nobody shot their eye out or got soap poisoning.

With that, just gonna drop this right here, so you can relive that magic of opening your very own Red Ryder (or equivalent).

15 gallons of festive holiday slime stacked up, ballistically speaking (VIDEO)

Fri, 12/15/2017 - 01:00

Starting with a Henry pump-action and moving to a .308 with several stops in between, 22 Plinkster gives a table of homemade goo a go.

Working in the name of science with a batch of backyard slime made by the junior Plinkster tribe, it gets messy in a hurry as he moves through various contestants from the gun safe including  .44 and .500 Magnums, running out of the bags of modified glue before he could get to the .338 Lapua.

Maybe next time. Great sweater, though.
