‘The Monster Is Real’ gun-control ad calls for proper storage of firearms (VIDEO)

Fri, 04/11/2014 - 22:52

“The Monster Is Real” gun-control ad by States United calls for the proper storage of firearms to help prevent children from getting their hands on them.

The ad follows a young boy who repeatedly tells his parents he sees a “monster in the closet.” It’s later discovered, however, the monster is actually a gun. The young boy’s fear quickly turns to curiosity as he removes the gun from a box. The result is an unintentional death, Adweek reports.

“In the wake of so many tragic shootings, the nation’s focus has been on strengthening gun laws,” says Sue Hornik, executive director of States United to Prevent Gun Violence. “But one preventable threat to children’s safety is unlocked and loaded guns found around the house … the proverbial ‘monster in the closet’ of our new public service announcement.”

Last year, States United released “Ed,” a gun-control ad that shows a man opening fire in an office using a muzzleloader. The video points out that guns have evolved, and so should gun laws.

Remington issuing safety recall of select Model 700 and Model Seven rifles

Fri, 04/11/2014 - 19:47

Remington has announced a voluntary safety recall of Model 700 and Model Seven rifles with X-Mark Pro, or XMP triggers manufactured between May 1, 2006 and April 9, 2014.

Any rifles made after April 9, 2014 are not subject to recall.

Remington discovered that rifles equipped with the XMP trigger can fire unintentionally. This is very dangerous and potentially fatal if not addressed. This problem is specific to the XMP trigger only. All other Model 700 and Model Seven rifles are unaffected by this recall.

The cause of the problem is “excess bonding agent being applied in the assembly process,” not the trigger itself.

“While Remington has the utmost confidence in the design of the XMP trigger, it is undertaking this recall in the interest of consumer safety to remove any potential excess bonding agent applied in the assembly process,” states the recall notice.

The XMP triggers can be identified by their smooth faces. Rifles with serrated trigger faces are not affected.

This is how Americans play Gnat Warfare!

That looks like a lot more fun than just makin’ noise and sendin’ lead downrange. Takes a lot of skill, too.

You can go do this, by the way. This is the biannual Big Sandy Machine Gun Shoot.

Chris Costa weighs in on handgun night sights (VIDEO)

Fri, 04/11/2014 - 15:23

Chris Costa’s starting to look like a convert to Sikhism with dat beard. Not like that’s a bad thing. Rockin’ bears, fun hat, carry a sword with you wherever you go. Chris Costa, now with warrior-saint action!

Not a bad breakdown of the pros and cons of night sights, either. I am pretty fond of the green front/yellow rears and the two-dot sights myself. I guess that means I have to let the beard grow out, too.

There are a handful of other videos on the Costa Ludus YouTube channel, although not many. This could mean a return to training videos for Costa.

House Reps. call for White House to ban import of “military style firearms”

Rep. Eliot Engel, (D-NY), and 81 others in the House are asking for the President to decree a comprehensive ban on imported firearms. (Photo credit: NY Daily News)

On Wednesday, 82 members of the House of Representatives called on President Obama to put a ban on imports of what they deem to be “military-style firearms.”

This ban, according to the lawmakers, would require no congressional action as the President has very broad authority under the 1968 Gun Control Act to prohibit the importation of firearms and ammunition unless they are generally recognized as particularly suitable for or readily adaptable to sporting purposes.

“Military-style firearms should have no place in our communities,” said Rep. E

The embattled Federal Air Marshal Service (FAMS) will soon have a new boss as current Director Robert Bray announced his retirement in the wake of a gun scandal.

According to a report from Jana Winter at Fox News, Bray’s home was the target of a December 2013 raid by federal law enforcement and that his recently disclosed resignation, effective in June, is related to that action.

Over the past 60-odd-years, if you needed a reliable rifle for open warfare, the AK has often been the go-to choice. Well things have changed since 1946, there’s no doubt about that, and in recognition of—errr, progress?—the Russians rebooted the line and came up with the AK12.

Stylish new ‘featureless’ AR by Ares Defense Systems (VIDEO)

Fri, 04/11/2014 - 13:15

Ares Defense Systems, better known for their modular, piston-driven belt-fed uppers for AR-15 and M16 lower receivers, is about to launch a new rifle that will make a lot of people happy. Called the SCR for Sport Configurable Rifle, this “featureless” AR is perfectly legal in all 50 states.

The SCR is not technically an AR. It’s a pistol grip-free rifle that accepts AR-15 upper receivers. This gives users the ability to have all of the benefits of AR uppers, the huge amount of aftermarket support, precision barrels and free-floating handguards all in a package that fits in same box as your gradpa’s hunting rifle.

And we mean all AR-15 upper receivers. This is not a bufferless .22 rifle. The SCR will be manufactured in 5.56 NATO/.223 Remington and 7.62x39mm and is compatible with standar AR-15 uppers.

The SCR uses a modified bolt carrier with an extension that drops into a recoil tube inside the stock, similar to some semi-auto shotguns. The bolt carrier is proprietary but the bolt itself is standard. We will know more about the rifle w

A young man planning to rob an elderly Ohio couple at knife point Monday quickly discovered that not only did the 92-year-old and his 89-year-old wife refuse to be victims of his scheme, but they were quite a force to be reckoned with.

According to local media, Robert Kelly lived in the Springfield Township neighborhood and had regularly done odd jobs like cutting the grass and shoveling snow for the couple in the past. So they didn’t think it was particularly out of the ordinary when he showed up asking to use their phone.

Battle of the mag-fed shotguns: Vepr vs Catamount Fury II

Battle of the mag-fed titans: Vepr 12, top, and the Catamount Fury II. (Photo by Jim Grant)

Anyone who hasn’t been living under a rock in the last 15 years has heard of the Saiga 12 magazine-fed shotgun. Based on the AKM rifles design, the Saiga 12 is basically a scaled-up 12-gauge AK, which is just as awesome as it sounds. Some Saiga shotguns can be picky with ammunition when first purchased, but this was acceptable given their low price. Now that their retail price has more than doubled, more and more competitors have joined the fray. Two up and coming stars are the Vepr 12 and the Catamount Fury. For the sake of fairness, I’ll be comparing the Vepr to the Catamount Fury II, th

Medal of Honor recipient Will Swenson returns to active duty

Fri, 04/11/2014 - 06:24

Medal of Honor recipient Capt. William Swenson has returned to active duty.

Captain William Swenson, who was awarded the Medal of Honor last year, returned to active duty March 14.

Swenson, who left the Army in 2011, was honored with the MOA for his heroic actions in Ganjgal, Afghanistan, in 2009, where he rushed into the fray to evacuate wounded warriors. But upon being given the country’s highest award, he put in a formal request to return to military service. Officials saw fit to honor the request and now Swenson is assigned to I Corps at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Washington, Military Times reports.

During the battle of Ganjgal, over 50 insurgents were entrenched into the mountainside. Swenson and then 1st Lt. Ademola Fab

Mini DIY crossbow Mk.II (VIDEO)

Thu, 04/10/2014 - 19:33

This is one YouTube celeb that doesn’t have to work on his Russian accent at all.

I like this design but it could be worked on a bit by cutting a flight groove into the top of the clothespin that makes up the crossbow’s barrel. It might be easier to load by cutting a groove into the latch of the crossbow, too.

You could make it more powerful by fastening the rubber band-string to one side of the limb piece, then twist it up to take out the slack and then fix the other side to the opposite end of the limb.

And before anyone says this is dangerous and useless with matches, you do not know how much lighter fluid I use to start charcoal. As far as I’m concerned, this is a safety device.

They’re just tools, amirite?

Nevada rancher faces off with Federal agents over grazing rights (VIDEO)

The Bureau of Land Management has assembled a task force to confront a Nevada rancher over the endangered desert tortoise and grazing of his cattle.

This fight is the latest in a 21-year running battle between 68-year-old Cliven Bundy, the National Park Service, the Center for Biological Diversity and the courts over just where his cattle can graze in Bunkerville, Nevada, about 80 miles northeast of Las Vegas.

“I have raised cattle on that land, which is public land for the people of Clark County, all my life. Why I raise cattle there and why I can raise cattle there is because I have preemptive rights,” Bundy said.

At one point in time, ranchers had the right to lease land from BLM to raise cattle,

Police say that a mother who was monitoring her son’s Facebook page may have helped to stop a planned shooting near a Salt Lake City high school and possible saved her son’s life.

Apparently the mom had seen comments to her son from two teen boys threatening to shoot him. The mother took the comments very seriously and immediately called the school resource officer to report what she had seen.

“There were very specific threats that they were going to go the high school and shoot her son,” Salt Lake police detective Greg Wilking told

Ruger issuing safety recall of select SR-556VT rifles

Thu, 04/10/2014 - 15:19

Ruger is issuing a recall of their SR-556VT or Varmint Target model SR-556 rifles. They have detected a potentially serious flaw, although no incidents have been reported. This only affects certain Varmint Target rifles, not the entire SR-556 line-up.

Effected rifles fall into the serial number range 590-32501 through 591-18704.

The accuratized SR-556VT features a non-standard two-stage trigger with a faulty disconnector. Ruger’s vendor did not properly heat-treat the disconnectors and they are susceptible to wear with use. A worn disconnector can lead to a problem where pulling the trigger does not immediately release the hammer as well as fail to catch the hammer after cycling a round causing double-fires.

Both of these potential outcomes are serious and can be very dangerous. It is very important that any owners of these Ruger SR-556VT rifles send their guns back to the factory for service.

Even though no problems or injuries have been reported if you own one of these SR-556VT rifles you should contact Ruger immediately for factory servicin

The moment a shootout erupts in a Philadelphia motel (VIDEO)

Thu, 04/10/2014 - 14:32

Police have released the CCTV footage of a shootout that erupted in a Northeast Philadelphia motel March 31.

The shooting took place at the Roosevelt Motor Inn around midnight and involved three unidentified men. They fired multiple rounds at each other while racing through the motel hallways before fleeing onto the streets, CBS News reports.

“We don’t know what’s the motive behind this. Either way, it’s still a problem,” said Philadelphia Police Lt. John Stanford. “There’s no way you can have individuals shooting at each other, especially inside of an occupied hotel.”

No one was injured during the shooting and the suspects are still at large. The Philadelphia Police Department has requested anyone with knowledge about the crime or who can identify the suspects call the detectives division at 215-686-3154.
