Winchester Model 62 Pump Action Rifles: The ultimate gallery gun (VIDEO)

Wed, 04/09/2014 - 12:43

Winchester Model 62a pump action rifle advertisement. This gun would become one of the most widely used gallery guns at carnivals and boardwalks.

With roots dating back to the 1890s, the Winchester Model 62 was the best of a long line of .22 caliber pump action rifles. These handy guns put food on the table, taught many a young shooter, and proved the weapon of choice for those who would plink tin cans, clay ducks, or spin the pinwheels at carnival shooting galleries on warm summer days.

Why was it invented?

In the year 1890, a few things happened at Winchester. The company picked up a new president, Mr. TG Bennett. One of the first things that Bennett did was look at the company’s

Holder locks horns with congressman over contempt of Congress citation (VIDEO)

Wed, 04/09/2014 - 12:33

At a Tuesday House Judicial Committee oversight hearing Attorney General Eric Holder locked horns with Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-TX) over Holder’s contempt of Congress citation for purportedly stonewalling investigators with respect to Operation Fast and Furious, the ATF’s fatally-flawed gun running program.

After explaining the significance of the citation, Holder was the first sitting cabinet member to be cited with contempt of Congress, Gohmert asserted that Holder’s refusal to turn over subpoenaed documents relating to Fast and Furious was a sign that he didn’t take the charge seriously.

“I realize that contempt is not a big deal to our Attorney General,” Gohmert said, “but it is important that we have proper oversight.”

“You don’t want to go there, buddy!” a clearly exasperated Holder exclaimed. ”You don’t want to go there, OK? You should not assume that uh that is not a big deal to me. I thin

Century’s American AK-47, is one of the best made (VIDEO)

Go ahead, read that title again, skip to the bottom of the page, comment that I’m a liar, a sell-out, an idiot, a hack etc. Century Arms, once held as the king of canted AK sights, has managed to achieve the impossible. The company built a U.S. manufactured, milled AK on par with offerings from much more expensive vendors. Purists beware, this AK is about as milspec as a Kel-Tec bullpup.

Skeptical? You should be, few importers amass enough capital to not only switch production from foreign to domestic, but also spearhead R&D to better the product. Will all this invested money actually pan out? Depends on how many people Century can convince to give them a second chance.

Mechanically inclined gunners have known for years that the so-called “wide-spread, unfixable” issues with Century products were easy enough to (properly) fix with a vice, hand tools, patience and an hour or so of angry grunts. I’m referring primarily to canted sights.

Previous rifle failures aside, what makes Century’s newest AK worth looking at? Well, for all us patriotic purchasers, the fact that the entire gun is made in the good ol’ U, S of A. If the C39 were a stamped gun, I wouldn’t be terribly impressed; folding receiver flats can be done in the most iso

Fifth-graders held at gunpoint by cops over building a treehouse (VIDEO)

The kids’ fort building efforts were creating tripping hazards, prompting a neighbor to call 911. (Photo credit: WSBTV)

When a group of fifth-grade boys gathered together to build a treehouse fort behind their homes, the last thing they expected was to have the police called on them who then responded with their guns drawn. But as local media reported, that’s exactly what happened last month in Georgia.

Eleven-year-old Omari Grant told reporters that he and his friends often played in the wooded area behind their subdivision and it had never been a problem in the past. However, as the young boys began building a fort in the trees, a resident from the neighboring subdivision made a call to 911 to report the activity in which th

Louisville mayor to CCP holders: Leave your guns at home (VIDEO)

“There will be plenty of public safety personnel,” Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer said referring to the weekend airshow and his plea for people to leave their guns at home. (Photo credit: WDRB)

In wake of recent violence in the city, Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer is asking that everyone – both law-abiding citizens and criminals alike – leave their guns at home during the Thunder Over Louisville airshow this weekend.

According to local media, Fischer’s plea came after rumors were heard of possible violence this weekend. Residents have already remained on edge since last month when a

The most worthless expensive handgun (VIDEO)

Tue, 04/08/2014 - 20:33

I get laying bare your terrible gun-buying decisions so that other gun owners can avoid the same mistakes but why, why would you show the Internet a picture of you in that bead choker?

Man, that’s just like saying you went through a boating shoe phase, or that you were one of those dudes who wore “men’s” capris.

Although I suppose he could sell it to a hipster.

Hipsters like the FN Five-seveN and bead necklaces.

Better suggestion for big, expensive, yet thoroughly practical FN pistol: FNX-45.

Nobody calls FNX-45 owners hipsters.

Everything wrong with action blockbusters in two-and-a-half minutes (VIDEO)

Tue, 04/08/2014 - 19:36

This RocketJump short is called “No Man Left Behind” and while “Everything wrong with action blockbusters in two-and-a-half minutes” has a certain truth to it, if we’re going to be honest the original name is still the best. Because that dude’s ass got hellaciously left behind.

Everything else is perfectly wrong. The clearly-wrong gun sounds, the gas-system-free AK, making impossible shots, missing guaranteed shots, the constant Four Rule violations, the bad jokes, the fake jargon … just perfect.

Glad to see more Freddie Wong action shorts. Get more at the RocketJump YouTube channel.

Vermont gun confiscation provisions tucked inside bill on government fees (VIDEO)

Tue, 04/08/2014 - 19:23

Vermont Gov. Peter Shumlin (D) could soon sign a bill that would establish a framework for law enforcement to seize and store guns from those who are the subject of a restraining order in that state. (Photo credit: Alicia Freese/VT Digger)

Buried inside a bill that would adjust fees for lottery ticket sales, returned checks, and the use of the “Market Vermont” logo, is a budding requirement for police to confiscate, store for a fee, and sell privately owned guns.

The legislation, among its many regulatory tenets, would establish a framework for law enforcement to seize and store guns from those who are the subject of a restraining order.

The U.S. Navy’s 32-megajoule rail gun is one step closer to blue water (VIDEO)

Tue, 04/08/2014 - 17:22

Twenty-three million, six hundred thousand foot-pounds of force, or 32 megajoules. That is how much a 23-pound projectile traveling a mach seven generates. That is what the U.S. Navy’s new rail gun is capable of.

Sea trials of the new rail gun will begin in 2016 if all goes according to plan, with the possibility of rail guns entering service as soon as 2018.

The Navy has been developing rail gun technology off and on since their first tests in 2006, and this rail gun stems from a project dating back to 2010. The Office of Naval Research, with help from BAE Systems, d

ATF rules ’7N6′ ammo is armor piercing, non importable

Tue, 04/08/2014 - 14:21

A breakdown of a 7N6 5.45×39 cartridge.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives announced Monday that it has deemed Russian surplus 7N6 5.45×39 type ammo “armor piercing,” so it cannot be imported into the United States.

“When ATF tested the 7N6 samples provided by (the U.S. Customs and Border Protection agency), they were found to contain a steel core,” the federal agency said in a news release, adding, “Accordingly, the ammunition is “armor piercing” under the section 921(a)(17)(B)(i) and is therefore not importable.”

Up until now, hobbyists commonly shot 7N6 rounds from rifles like the

Intruder fatally shot after breaking into home of three armed residents (VIDEO)

An intruder was fatally shot when he broke into a family of four’s Winter Haven, Florida, home early Monday morning, not knowing that three of the four were armed.

Local media reported that it was just before 7:00 a.m. when the family heard a noise at the back door. The homeowner’s adult son, Luis A. Pena armed himself, went to see what the commotion was about, and discovered a man trying to get into the house through a set of French doors.

Pena fired a warning shot, but the suspect, later identified as 40-year-old Mitchell Large, did not heed the warning and continued to enter the residence

In this episode of “We The People”, the Sumners talk about their family motto “In Guns We Trust,” try to decide ‘is bigger better?’ for concealed carry, and, last but not least, self-defense scenarios important to everyone: the zombie apocalypse.

U.S. Navy develops point-and-click technology for unmanned helicopters

Tue, 04/08/2014 - 08:46

New technology developed by the U.S. Navy can convert any rotary-aircraft to a point-and-click autonomous helicopter.

New technology being tested by the United States Navy allows a troop to deploy an unmanned helicopter with a few simple commands from a tablet.

The Naval Research Laboratory has developed sophisticated sensors and software that allows an unmanned helicopter to operate without the constant supervision of a human counterpart. While the previous versions of unmanned helicopters required a human to remotely pilot it, the new tech is much closer to point-and-click, Reuters reports.

What makes this technology so versatile is that it can be applied to any rotary-winged aircraft. And while it’s already light-years ahead of everything else, researchers hope to push the envelope even further.

“”Right now, … the way we have this set up, it’s asking for permission to land. I want it to … eventually tell the Mar

Infinity parodies ‘True Detective’ with ‘AT&True Detective’ commercial (VIDEO)

Tue, 04/08/2014 - 08:46

A new Infinity commercial called “AT&True Detective” parodies HBO’s “True Detective.”

In the parody, “True Detective’s” hard hitting Detective Rust Cohle sits down with a group of kids to talk about some really big numbers. Eventually, the word “infinity” gets thrown out and Rust goes off on rant about time continuity.

All in all, it’s a pretty good Matthew McConaughey impression.

Artists install giant poster of Pakistani girl to deter drone pilots from striking

Artists installed this giant poster in a village near the border of Afghanistan to remind drone operators their targets are people, not “bug splats.”

Artists installed a giant poster of a young Pakistani girl in a village near the border of Afghanistan to deter drone pilots from striking.

The title of the image is called “not a bug splat,” and refers to “bug splat,” a term used by Predator drone operators when referring to the people that were killed as a result of their operation. The photo itself is of a Pakistani girl whose parents and two siblings were killed in a drone strike, Daily Mail reports.

The project was backed by Amnesty International, who claims that since 2004, drone strikes have claimed nearly 900 Pakistani lives. Those who live in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa region, where the poster was placed, say drone attacks happen nearly every day. And according one of the group’s representatives, drone pilots have dehumanized thei

Attorney General Eric Holder advocates smart gun technology to Congress (VIDEO)

In speaking before a House committee last week, Attorney General Eric Holder explained his feelings on smart gun technology aimed at “decreasing the misuse of weapons.”

This came when testifying to the House appropriations subcommittee on the subject of gun safety April 4. In his presentation, he spoke revealingly of new biometric technology that he hoped the Department of Justice would be able to mature.

“I think that one of the things that we learned when we were trying to get passed those common sense reforms last year, Vice President Biden and I had a meeting with a group of technology people and we talked about how guns can be

Top 5 backpacking plinkers

Nature. So beautiful. So full of wonder and majesty. And filled with delicious animals for the intrepid outdoorsman.

Camping is $646 billion industry, with an endless selection of accessories. Everything from canteens and fire-starters to survival knives and backpacks. While “roughing it” in a camper with ramen might appeal to day-trippers, mountain-men and the like tend to catch, cook and consume their own game on the trail and few calibers are more versatile than .22 LR.

From coyotes to squirrels, the venerable .22 LR can keep your party fed indefinitely, even in the most remote locations — provided there is game to hunt.  While some will argue that their normal carry gun is adequate for hiking I disagree. Most carry guns are suited to dealing with two-legged adversaries and are difficult at best to hit small, distant targets with. While I stand by my argument that .22 LR is a less-than-ideal defensive round, it excels at hunting small game for precisely the reason it isn’t a good defensive round. It does minimal damage. If you’re attempting to shoot a squirrel for sustenance, obliterating it with a .45 hollow point is counter-productive.

When considering a hiking gun, four factors should outweigh all others: accuracy, reliability, portability and weight. A

5.11 Tactical bringing back the limited-edition Tactical Duty Kilt (VIDEO)

Mon, 04/07/2014 - 20:40

In what started as an April Fool’s joke gone wrong, 5.11 Tactical is now a sporadic manufacturer of the Tactical Duty Kilt, or TDK. Initially “announced” as a prank, the demand for a tactical kilt was so great that 5.11 Tactical was compelled to make them a reality.

It was a successful limited run, and after a little pressure from the Dropkick Murpheys 5.11 Tactical brought the TDK back for a second run with more color and camo patter options.

Now 5.11 Tactical is prepping a third run of these sought-after tactical pant-alternatives. They will start taking orders for the next batch of TDKs on April 15 later this month.

The kilts will sell for $69 in solid colors or $79 in camo print. 5.11 hasn’t listed the colors that the TDK will be available in but historically they’ve come in traditional shades of the tactical rainbow, like charcoal, coyote, tundra, dark navy, black and TDU khaki and green and we expect this to remain the same. Camo patterns will be either Realtree Xtra or Multicam.
